How to manage hounds without most conventional means

Recommended Posts

Alright here's my problem:

I lost my world after making a second meat effigy to make up for the first one that I had lost while trying to storm clockworks with a pig army(I was almost there, and then dusk came, and there was a spider nest onscreen so my pigs just HAD to all go kamikaze to kill dem spiders)

Shortly afterwards, after I got another meat effigy up, hounds came at dusk and murdered me.

I then died the next day trying to kite a frog.

How can I manage hounds if:

1. I have no tooth traps

2. I only can make spears

3. Only nearby structures are pighouses and frogponds(which are useless as they both have animals that go away at dusk)

4. I have a nearby spider nest

5. Tanking is not an option(low  health)

6.there is a nearby spider nest

Can I use the spider nest? Will hounds trigger the creep? or do I have to crazily dance at the brink of death around spiders and hounds?

And is there a more convenient alternative besides tooth traps and bee mines that allows me to get maximum spoils at dusk/night?

Yuup, I would have gone to the beefalo. Even if the hounds come at night, if they bite on a beefalo they'll wake up and kill it.

Another thing you could do, if you have the resources to do so, is build a few rabbit houses. Granted it's REALLY expensive, but in your case, when the later game comes around, they'll be a lifesaver.

How many hounds are coming? Search the map for anything useful. Lureplants? Beefalo? Pigs, frogs and spiders, obviously. They can be your lifesaver. A swamp area with violent tentacles or merms? Tallbirds? Pengulls? If you don't have any, run along the coastline and some should pop up. If you have time, you could run into the caves and gather materials for bunny houses that you place near the pigs. There are many ways to tackle hounds. If everything else fails, lure them into a forest and burn the whole place down.

Yeah best thing to do is run to aggressive mobs until fight it as per above or kiting it if they are four or higher

Yeah, living around neutral/hostile mobs can be a lifesaver early-mid game as hounds, being the over aggressive things they are, will generally attack anything in the general vicinity, if this is a frog mafia, spider den, or a beefallo pack, you're in luck, if its you, not so much.

Been there done that...but didnt die.

If you really have nothing...I'd go to a cave... If you have any nearby..

Cause...If they are too many hounds I think you would die...Kiting them is hard...But maybe the spiders can kill some,

If anything gl

I never make tooth traps anyway. I always just lure hounds to pig houses and the matching spider den (I try to make a few a few screens away from my base) or a treeguard. I used to use Beefalo, but just stopped for no real apparent reason.

I also do that too, except a new game last play where the durn houses were rare and scattered far from my winter base.

In 20/20 hindsight, I still think I didn't have the rocks for extra stone only finding a mini quarry before winter hit anyway, so building pig houses wasn't an option until that next spring when I could explore more. ....

Bees are always a good option. Hounds will annoy any bee hive they find no matter the hour or season.

Never underestimate the spider dance. As soon as the first hound bites a spider the whole nest will get involved.

Tentacles. Nuff said.

Beefalo.

Pengulls. Pengulls are awesome for hounds.

I rarely use pigs simply because I'm rarely in an advantageous position to use pigs when the hounds start howling.

pengulls are probably the most under rated hound defense in winter time, and are day/night time, they have huge tanking capabilities. incidentally both lure plants and pengulls are most effective as hound defense in winter.

but for early game there really isn't any magic to hound defense, logsuit or grass suit and a spear, and a few jerky maybe

Walk in a straight line towards your pigs. Let them kill the hounds. Unless the hounds have you surrounded, you can't be hit by them. If you just walk in a straight line, you can easily escape because they have to stay stationary to attack. Let your pigs kill them all. If it's night, then kite.

Had them spawn right in my camp in one of my first winters recently...learned how powerful they were when I couldn't get teeth after several hound attacks. I now appreciate them for that, and hate their noisiness else-wise (but they do offer those eggs and feathers in winter...)
