  1. 1. What do you think?

    • I love it so freaking much!
    • It's great, but I wish it had more content.
    • Meh.
    • It's okay, but I wouldn't spend a lot of my time on it.
    • It sucks and I hate it.

I'm still waiting for that one person who votes "it sucks, and I hate it".

Since they're denying that any map generation changes were made in the Six Feet Under update, I'm kinda tempted to say that. It needs to be fixed. Seriously.

Map generation hasn't had anything really great since Alpha stage.

I've been generating a few maps, trying to understand what is wrong with them now.  Here are a few.  I don't see anything wrong or different...

Have you ever tried messing with the custom branching option? Turning it to less or none keeps things from being all starfish shaped for me.

But yeah, doing that should reduce the starfishness of it, for people who have an issue with that.

I've never had to do that before this update...if I do, I feel like I'm messing with the delicate balance of the game. I try not to alter any settings because they're probably what creates the best experience for the game, in addition to being tested the most extensively by the developers. No matter how miniscule, just knowing that you negatively affected your enjoyment can be really bothersome. 3/4ths of maps I generated before were great, 4/4 maps I generate now I wouldn't bother with.

And no, it was not constant star-fished islands before this update. Many have even acknowledged that it repeats this pattern as well. Heck, maybe it should, but at least compress it more or something so that it actually resembles an island like in the past...

Can't hurt to try it at least once and see what kind of a difference in game play experience it makes for you, assuming all four of your save slots aren't currently filled. I fully agree with you on that map generation needs some serious fixes, though. I'd love to be able to enjoy my environment without having to mess with land branching.

Since I have Murrphy's Luck (like getting a Gobbler the first second berry bush I pick way before flint on day one and two a day for the first four days,)  I often get this starfish problem since the SFU update. I haven't seen these many wedge areas since...Trivial Pursuit

I have. It wasn't long before I got sick of walking half a day to reach an area in PLAIN SIGHT, or with a 1 tile gap in-between. Although this happened before, it wasn't exactly the main recurring theme of islands, just an occasional annoyance with the generator. Now, it's almost like an expectation that you take really far and sharp bends to reach neatly divided biomes and resources.

Hmmm, I need rocks today, I'll walk across the entire map to get to that part of the star with a rock biome! Now that I need berry bushes, I'll walk all the way around the border to the grass biome! It feels so artificial and RPG-ish, because there's nothing random about this. Another problem is deciding where to build a base; should I make it in the cramped, awkward intersection at the middle, or on the ends of one of the massive points of the star meaning more expansion but a constant pain in the ass to travel somewhere else?

Not to mention, like the truthseeker said, the inherent ugliness and wedges.

SOMETHING CHANGED WITH WORLD GENERATION, IT SHALL BE KNOWN.

I wouldn't say it is the "final update". It's the last of the regularly scheduled updates that we promised at launch. I am sure there are still some things for you guys to enjoy.

so happy to hear that, there are too many questions to be answered in the plot for it to all end suddenly

I mostly just wish they hadn't spent, like, half the updates since winter jamming content into the completely optional and fairly pointless caves. The game is great, but half of it might as well not exist for how often I bother spelunking (a frequency mostly predicated on me wanting to see what was down there after each update, and then not caring anymore since it barely mattered except for a couple materials.)

As we have said before, things are coming. As we have more information about what those things are, we will roll that info out to you. Generally we don't really like to talk about anything until it is a for sure thing. At this moment, all we have been able to say is that we want to do some sort of DLC, but even that we don't have nailed down just yet.

I think overall, from this point out, we probably have more things planned for Don't Starve than we have had since beta ended. But really the difference is just how we deliver these things. We are going to be focusing on providing a more complete experience before it's released rather than releasing piecemeal content that is consumed across a longer period of time. And it's not going to center around periodic updates, like in the past. So when we release content, it's likely going to be when it is completed or at least near completion.

We will be putting out some more information soon about these things. But so we are clear, things are far from over for Don't Starve.

There's hope for the story being completed, thank God.
