Is the game engine and programming language the same?

Just curious if there is some sort of optimization behind the scenes allowing the game to run better than DST (input lag when hosting caves, game lagging a lot when there's tons of entities on the screen, etc.)

Apart from that, looks extremely good. Like a modern version of the game we loved for so long. I can't wait to try it out!

Thank you Klei,

I'm full.

What happens to Don't Strave Together and the skins I've worked on getting for years? What kind of Co op playable?

I might be wrong, but I don't think that this game is meant to replace DST. I get the feeling that it is supposed to be similar to that of the Forge/Gorge, where it builds adjacently off of DST, but they don't really affect each other.

Between Y axis being utilized, shorelines and water connection with the land, swimming and the victorian/gothinc-esque aesthetic this looks mighty promising.

Characters' designs are different, they look different, especially Wendy - she looks older. I wonder if this is a proper story-wise sequel then, with the characters aging (somehow) or if this is a spin-off/multiverse-type situation.

Either way, my first thoughts are positive

Don't Starve Together is not going anywhere, everything you own will still be there.

I think there is definitely precedence for this, but personally I really hope this game IS meant to replace DST considering DST is very old now and a lot of the developers' current intentions are struggling to fit into the world in my opinion.

- Ocean content feels very secondary and slow

- Exploration hasn't gotten a chance to develop much recently

- Weapons are breaching the scope of the game's combat system

I think DSE could be a chance to improve upon all of that and design for a larger scope overall.

Elsewhere actually looks like the next Gen don’t starve game I’ve been craving, I love how creatures can just knock Wilson off cliff sides and stuff 😂♥️

Yup you were what I was thinking of

DSE has the chance to do the funniest thing ever by bringing one of them back the same way DST brought back Wortox

I could genuinely see Wallace working really well with the artstyle and general Intensified Victorian-ness. Though Waverly would be way funnier and there's definitely potential there for a cool mechanic with witch shenanigans

i LOVE how much they leaned into the victorian style for this game. its something we always see in the story trailers or whenever see the "present" but we rarely see it ingame apart from a few mentions or the skin set

Doubt I'll get a response, but might as well try.
Will DSE have the skill trees for characters from DST? Will there be reworks? Skins transferred (doubt it given the art style is slightly different)? On Steam it says it is a Single-Player game (much like Away Team), is this a mistake? What characters are getting ported over (will I get to keep our beloved Wormwood)? Why announce it now?

my guess:
For what remains this year they will do almost all of the remaining character reworks + qols stuff to ease the wait
Next year will be the last update where they add the shadow counterpart to WARBOT, its going to be the charlie boss fight (but they will not name her charlie instead they will call it "the tenebrae boss" or something dumb to look cool)
after that 2 options
- Keep updating dst with another arc
- Leave dst as a finished game and start updating DS elsewhere as main source of revenue for this franchise

I do worry a bit thinking this game could canibalize the Don't Starve Together audience, and split the resources between both games, but I do trust Klei though this well beforehand.

Can't wait for more news!

Unfortunately this came up with my mind too (together with billions other things and emotions with this announcement ahahaha) and unfortunately I will say it with the most sincere and cruel thing....this will not only cannibalize, it will destroy and end Ds2. I'm not saying it with pessimistic or negative way, oh no no no! I say it with extremely positive and hopeful sentiment. This Ds3 seems all around in every corner, just a "straight upgrade" compared to Ds2, just like Ds2 is to Ds1, with more content, quality of life, ecc.... minus the DLC's.

Man. Just look at those WONDERFUL Caves. FINALLY. Some good Caves. Even jumping cliffs, the altitude....oh man, so exicted. So I think it will definitely mark the end of Ds2, which is ironic considering its 10 years anniversary lmao.
