I might be wrong, but I don't think that this game is meant to replace DST. I get the feeling that it is supposed to be similar to that of the Forge/Gorge, where it builds adjacently off of DST, but they don't really affect each other.

I can't see it, seeing how it seems literally Ds3. How can Klei juggle it? Between this and other games, I see it as a proper conclusion for Ds2. Afterall, they were finishing Rifts and the ending of the game, no?

Unfortunately this came up with my mind too (together with billions other things and emotions with this announcement ahahaha) and unfortunately I will say it with the most sincere and cruel thing....this will not only cannibalize, it will destroy and end Ds2. I'm not saying it with pessimistic or negative way, oh no no no! I say it with extremely positive and hopeful sentiment. This Ds3 seems all around in every corner, just a "straight upgrade" compared to Ds2, just like Ds2 is to Ds1, with more content, quality of life, ecc.... minus the DLC's.

Man. Just look at those WONDERFUL Caves. FINALLY. Some good Caves. Even jumping cliffs, the altitude....oh man, so exicted. So I think it will definitely mark the end of Ds2, which is ironic considering its 10 years anniversary lmao.

Yeah I would love for it to be a clean slate for both the franchise and the team... I lost hope a long time ago for the caves or ocean to be made good, as it's a LOT of work to do that without it still feeling "tacked on" like a lot of recent updates felt, sadly.

I think there is definitely precedence for this, but personally I really hope this game IS meant to replace DST considering DST is very old now and a lot of the developers' current intentions are struggling to fit into the world in my opinion.

- Ocean content feels very secondary and slow

- Exploration hasn't gotten a chance to develop much recently

- Weapons are breaching the scope of the game's combat system

I think DSE could be a chance to improve upon all of that and design for a larger scope overall.

Exactly! And much much more that we have seen in the trailer. Plus all my other comments in this post, this is literally "Ds2 is ending, welcome Ds3!".

Doubt I'll get a response, but might as well try.
Will DSE have the skill trees for characters from DST? Will there be reworks?

AHAHAHAHAHA

Hi eveloooooo. My same thinkinggggg about skill trees xD

I swear, I will shout a big laugh if the game will not have skill trees.

DST has been using an old engine for almost 10 years. It's time for it to retire. Klei could maintain both games simultaneously and gradually phase out DST with a few updates until the new DS becomes the most played.

Yes, exactly! It's a lot of work and resources. At this point it's better to make a new game, you know?

I really don't think this takes place after DST because it seems very Gorge-esque. We even saw the goats.

I feel like people are jumping on the gun of "DS Three will OBLITERATE and DESTROY DS Two!!!" Way too fast.

I think it's important to note the development on DST has already slowed down pretty considerably. It was a bit confusing on why at first, but given the context they were working on a whole new game, it makes a lot of sense why they had slowed down.

In addition, it's also a new game. Many people, particularly old school DST players, might not like various aspects of said game and prefer their playtime in the more simple but familiar area of DST. I know people have a lot of hype for it (and I'm excited, as well!), but there's something pleasent about playing in familiarity with things you've known for years than needing to relearn what is essentially an entirely new experience (especially if the trailer is anything to go from!)

I personally believe it will continue at its slowed pace in favor of the new game, but it won't stop existing in terms of development. I moreso see it like ONI's development. ONI regularly gets updates to its base version with minor tweaks/QOL adjustments, with the DLCs being the real one-two combo of content people might want to seek out.

DST is a game close to my heart and I imagine for many others, and still likely makes a decent amount of money to warrant supporting it. It might take a bit of a sideline in favor of the new game, but I can see it still persisting for a good few years. Worst case, they pull a DS and make one last major content update fixing as many issues as possible and giving QOL boons for people to cherish years to come.

Yeah I don't think that they will straight up gut DST immediately after this game releases, they have decreased the amount of people working on DST a few months back for a reason.

It will probably keep going at a slower pace like you said and then get a send off, though I do think that with Rifts getting finished in the next update (I think? sorry, haven't really been following to closely for a bit now) that that will be the last "Major" new content update that the game will see, though I might be wrong.

Isn't all of this exactly what are we saying? Unless I missed some people here

Maybe future costant? Like a lot of time has passed and now the continent we knew has changed a lot.

They are putting the old dog down. This last piece of the puzzle makes it clear. Now it all makes sense. This is just my opinion but I don't think this update having a single skill tree was about "quality over quantity" or whatever even though that's what they said. Wx's skill tree beta so far to me atleast has had no better quality to it than the others. They are just euthanizing DST so they slowed down churning up new content. What is curious about this is that it looks like this new game takes place during Gorge which doesn't take place after DST.

It is a big gamble, since Don't Starve Together is likely their biggest source of income (because skins), and is a huge game in China.

Just because you release a sequel to your game doesn't mean your playerbase is going to abandon the old game and move onto the new one (look no further than Payday 2 - Payday 3 example). If I was at Klei, I would make the new game and expect players to move onto it, but keep the old playerbase and new game alive, while providing incentives for old players to try the new game hoping they stayed, and hope to achieve a lovely transition, because regardless of how good and interesting the blueprint of the new game is, is very unlikely is going to have the same amount of content as DST (that has had 10+ years of development).

Best case scenario the game is amazing, just as good and expansive and replayable as the trailer made it look, and everyone agrees this game to be a better Don't Starve in every single way.

Worst case scenario has the playerbase split, with half moving onto the new game, and the other half staying, forcing Klei to split resources between both games, or just focus on the new one while keeping old one with skin and small QoL updates once the reworks and the current story arc is done.

I don't know of any other long lived games that have successfully recapture its original playerbase after they swapped onto a sequel (Smite 2 and Runescape also come to mind), so I'd say Klei needs to be careful if they do plan to make a full switch.

This is just speculation, we'll probably know more next week once the roadmap drops
