Are the forums always like this?

It's just a blowtorch right now. It's insane to me to hate on a BETA update.

People are so passionate about expressing their opinions because this is still a beta update. Or rather, if this becomes an official update, the forums will become from "blowtorch" to "THE ROARING INFERNO OF HELL".

I kind of wish the mods would use ban time outs with scaling length the sheer number of rage bait posts are what are making the forms more hostile and if they just put temp bans on more hostile posts more constructive ones could come to the front potentially even inspiring the more hostile crowd to be more productive.

I've really only used the forums since like a year ago. Is everything going on normal in the history of the games forums or is it really just these past updates bringing unresolved rage out now? (I mean the forum posts not the actual dst content)

I'm sort of a senior here already (there are some that have been longer than me though) but I've been here since about late 2016, and the answer is no, it's definitely not always like this.

We have had some major "events" that can end up becoming heated, like the infamous "Wigfrid vs Wolfgang" thread which lasted a looong time until it got locked by moderators, since what started as a nice debate, became just a bunch of people insulting each other. What's happening now it's completely different.
This is a very specific event of a big part of the community (mostly the Asian community) stepping up due to the Wendy changes being unpopular.

In general the forum has both calm and heated moments, I remember back when Klei fixed the "monkey cannon" bug that **** also brought a lot of rage. Same with the Great Depths Worm.

But the amount of rage right now is pretty unusual, before this update the forum was in a pretty chill and fun state , most of the topics were just people throwing ideas for any skill tree or trying to guess what the next trio of skill trees was going to be. In this update Wendy is clearly the only reason for this amount of rage, like literally all the Wortox and Walter players are mostly chilling right now...

Making “omg the forum did what??” threads is part of the problem.

This isn't remotely close to what the point of my post was. I am genuinely curious as if the forums have always had heated moments like this in the past.

Sorry if my title looked like that.

Yup

aside from the (unpleasantly novel) demands that people be fired and the impotent money threats the actions are not unusual for the forum but the sheer quantity of both posts and posts that are a direct violation of the rules is something entirely new. what normally is 10-20 posts with half being insulting and rude every hour or so is now 60-70 posts with more than two thirds being insulting and rude every hour.

small aside though, before someone tries to use this post to be bigoted; there is a higher ratio of rude and insulting posts because there are less "silly" threads being posted and posted in percentage-wise

Nope I dont think so. Was on streamers discord so I had an idea people were upset

for the best, the tencent thing is where almost every block i have ever done on this forum came from. there were a LOT of "nice" people saying absolutely revolting things and a lot of not nice people saying even worse things x___x

(Disclaimer, any posts cited are simply cited for the sake of historical purposes; they are not meant to target any of the parties involved.)

(Also, content warning.)

While it's the normal state of being to see people arguing about balance and ideas and whatnot, against common themes the likes of game and character balance, the usage of the word "Uncompromising", the lack of ocean content or the gender of WX-78, among many many other things, I can count on a hand the times the forums has been truly viciously chaotic, and only once does it come as close to the viciousness we are experiencing:

 - my first contact of a big forum conflict was the Open Letter To Klei thread.

 - next there's the Wolfgang refresh beta, of which you can visit pages 196 through 192 of the beta forums to see; while there's less content i can sift through on the GenDisc forum there's these threads off the top of my head.

 - then, there's the Tencent Merger, which unfortunately we don't have full access to, as the Offtopic Forum was removed in the forum update that also removed the popular post status and forum titles. We can still access the first page of the thread through Wayback Machine at least, but we won't be able to see the succeeding chaos in the next forty-five or so pages that ensued.

 - But those three conflicts pale in comparison to the sheer depravity of the third, the Wigfrid Battle Helm change. Page 2 of the Other Stuff Forums, and especially this thread, speak for themselves. This also should count as the first time the forums has been raided.

All in all though the forums has grown considerably less welcoming. In a current poll's results, compared to before, far less people are in the forums, and a smaller proportion of people feel welcome in the community.

Edit: Before I forget, because I nearly did, there's also the Content Drought poll fiasco. That's on me.

Everytime there is even one negative post someone makes a post like this, its hilarious.

Do people want the forum to just be praising klei for everything they've done without zero criticism?

hat would be boring

Have you seen the beta branch lately?
