Cutless Rework

Recommended Posts

Hi all. As you probably know, the cutless is a pretty worthless weapon. So, I thought I'd propose a rework.

Durability 150 -> 100. This is to balance it with the other changes.
Damage 27.2 -> 34. This is to make the cutless deal some damage.
Remove the steal perk. This is because it is kind of pointless outside of very few uses.
Add a perk similar to the blood butcherer from terraria. Essentially, on hit there is a 50% chance to put a splinter on the enemy. This splinter can stack up to 5 times (per enemy) and deals 5 damage per second over time per splinter. Every 10 seconds, a splinter will be removed, and the timer will reset on hit.

Essentially, this makes the cutless less useless and more useful as an auxiliary weapon that lower dps characters (wendy and wes to name a few) can utilise well. It wouldn't be the primary weapon, but adds some nice dps in group fights. Thanks for reading my idea!

I believe what the Cutless already propose now is better than the suggestion here. Especially in the setting of being on the Moonquay, or anything Monkey related really, being able to pick back items that were going to be lost is useful. While I could be constantly more careful about my inventory placement… it’s cool that they saved my cane and other things a couple time already, I’ll crave this over more damage.

But I say, what you suggest could be an entirely new weapon altogether like cactus bat or what, I do want more weapon diversity but the Cutless feels in its right place :)

Your proposal changes cutless from being something I use very situationally to something I would immediately throw into a fire as fuel. At the point in the game where you're fighting pirate monkeys, you are well beyond ever touching anything that's the equivalent of a spear.

The current mechanics are also unique in such a way that really lends itself to emergent gameplay as updates go on: for example, if Royal Guards from Hamlet were in DST instead of DS, we would be able to hit them once with a cutless to steal their halberd straight out of their inventory, or you could trade relics with Queen Malfalfa and then smack her a few times to get it all back. ANY potential mechanic Klei might add involving a mob that has an inventory will be affected by the cutless, and I'd like to see where that goes rather than entirely replace it with just a regular weapon that you use for damage.

How about instead we add a additional mechanic where you can use the cutlass on followers without them becoming hostile or harming them I could think of several ways this could improve followers. As a additional added change it could be made to remove items in the head and handslots when used on followers.

Am I missing something here? What do u mean with steal perk? I'm not aware about this, can we steal from mobs?

Hits with the cutless apply the same effect as frogs' attacks (something like that, never used it myself)

On topic, I don't think I want to deal with powder monkeys doing bleed damage.

I mean yeah but u can actually steal from mobs?? What necessarily??

Any mob with an inventory.

It's kind of finnicky, mainly you can steal from Pirates and players. (With pvp enabled.)
There's other mobs with inventories, pigmen, bunnymen, most trader mobs, Otters, Batilisks Lureplants... Getting it to work on them is hard since the window in which they use those inventories is usually only a few frames. Haven't tested Otters but between them and Bats they ought to be the easier targets to try it with.

Aren't Depth Worms the best candidate?

that could be a good thing if the item allowed us to steal the drop from them regardless of the inventory like volt goat horns or something but the way it is right now feels really really niched

Welp thank you very much for answer guys I wasnt aware that actually a mechanic in the weapon
