Extremely disappointed

Recommended Posts

Instead of posting a comment in every thread about the skill trees that is going to be made, I'm just gonna say here and now it's unbelievably sad to see Klei going ahead with this.

And locking such a cool looking saddle behind a skill tree. rip

At least the animation about Wigfrid and Willow together would be absolutely lovely to see, I hope they get to wreak absolute havoc.

The skill trees have been absolutely amazing so far, these ones especially blew my expectations out of the window. I’m extremely thankful Klei has decided to go ahead with this, but hopefully the next update will be a content update so people who don’t like skill trees are satiated.

This had content too. This is literally wilson skill tree update 2. New NPC + skill tree.

I imagine that’s the general formula they are likely gonna go with. One “main” content update focusing on the arc, and then a smaller update focused on skill trees and either QOL tweaks or a small addition to the game. It seems like it would work out pretty well.

Are you disappointed with skill trees in general or Willow/Wigfrid's skill trees? The source of your disappointment is unclear to me.

I'm disappointed so much of Willow's skill tree is focused solely on combat. That doesn't make me dislike it though.

Might be confusing, yeah, but I'm strictly in the "Skill Trees are Bad in general and Klei is running out of time to backpedal and remove them" camp. Skill trees are really bad and detrimental to the game, and people accepting them with open arms is just sad to watch.

I am curious as to why you think this skill trees are bad. I've seen you express this opinion previously, but I have not seen any of your reasons behind not liking skill trees.

Can you elaborate on what you don't like about skill trees specifically?

The saddle skill is just confusing, she has nothing to do with beefalos and the current boss design makes beefalos useless(all of new bosses have some sort of knock back), there's no point to do beefalos as other characters either

wigfrid's new helmet significantly reduces the knockback effect, and its strong enough that you can immediately remount your beefalo after being knocked off. Essentially, it makes beefalo a lot more reliable against the new enemies so long as youre prepared for getting hit

in the other hand is sad to watch someone hating  something that can bring a lot of fun and interesting stuff just because is new

It's hard to imagine why skill trees and reworks exist at all.

It looks alien and has a bad effect on the overall game balance.
Moreover, in none of the reworks were the new advantages compensated by enhanced disadvantages.
If the reworks weaken the characters, they give giant buffs.

This is not an uncompromising game, but some kind of trolling from the developers.

I really think this whole multiplayer thing is detrimental to the series, hopefully they correct it sometime soon

Multiplayer as a whole damages the series, because it is not peculiar to the basic idea of the Don't Starve universe.

It is strange that the players noticed which course DST chose only after the appearance of skill trees.

I love skill trees in general in most games. Characters with Skill trees in DST are definitely cooler than chars without them. But at the same time, I am a bit sad they lock so many cool things behind characters that I am just never going to play. While at the same time it seems like they're struggling a bit to come up with interesting loot for bosses.

But you can opt to not use the skill trees. If you don't like them, you can just not use them and it won't affect the game balance.

People have been talking about the direction the game's been going for a while, my comment was a joke about the idea of still hoping they turn back their decision to add skill trees.

And the icon will constantly get in the way on the screen.

And I'm not like I won't be able to remove the reworks of the characters

In my opinion, the game has started to develop in the wrong direction since the release of the game.
Although this is just my opinion.

Can you elaborate on what you don't like about skill trees specifically?

I've talked about it a lot when the original 3 came out (not counting Wilson since that was his ""refresh"") but to summarize:

- Skill trees are a lazy and uncreative way to lock content. Compare how you unlock an insight point to buy yourself a blueprint essentially, to how you get blueprints in the archives. Which one feels more like you achieved something and your character evolved?

- Skill trees do not help new players learn the game, at least not nearly as much as simply playing already does. They're a crutch, and looking at Wigfrid's tree which is basically "stat bonus" and "unlock thing" idk if they are even meant to- which makes them clutter, and therefore even harder to learn the game. A paradox in a way, or I'm just stupid.

- Small and insignificant, they make you stop walking when inspecting a player and cover over half your screen. Get out of the way, I'm trying to use weather pain not look at my friends' poor choices!

- They're just another wave of reworks. We'll never reach any sort of balance in the game at this point.

- "Personalizing your gameplay" was already a thing. It was called choosing your character. And playing your way.

- Some of the skills are just straight up too powerful to have in the early game. If Klei wanted some sort of New Game+, original Don't Starve already had the perfect solution.

- Locking universally needed content behind characters is bad, and locking it behind individual skills is even worse.

- Something about a giant screen where you assign stats to your character is just so impossibly Not DS like, it takes me out every time, I hate looking at it, I hate using it.

- Getting the skills is too easy, and at the same time bothersome enough people just use commands a lot of the time. I unlocked Wilson's insight the "proper" way and half the time I was just sitting by a fire (because beta testing, not keeping the world) and got rewarded for it. I love cookie clicker and sitting idly by when number go up, but in a game like DST?...

(Whatever other points I had made are archived by now and I'm too tired to see if I missed anything. I also don't want to go through this again, I'm just gonna get dragged by other forumites)

Overall, I'm just really sad we've lost the kind of game DST used to be, and instead going for cheap tricks like this.

That's odd, for me whenever I click once on the icon and close it, it disappears.

Woah, you think it's going on the wrong direction for this long and you're still committed to the game? May I ask what you enjoy about the game? Because disliking the development since release and still playing is kinda strange lol

im sorry you actually thought skill trees would cease after... 4 skill trees now?

It was one skill tree I thought was going to be character exclusive so I was willing to deal with my disappointment, and one update with 3 of them that sparked a massive storm on the forums and had a few months to get tested in-game. There was still chance they would scratch the idea, but it's now deep in fractions of a percent, so I'm not going to delude myself anymore.

I don't hate it "just because it's new", I hate it just because it's bad.

So like stop playing

I don't need to, there's a perfectly functional mod that removes skill trees. I'm sad for new players, sure, but DS still exists, I just need to make sure anyone I recommend DST to plays the original first.

I will still express my disapproval because I love this game and want it to be better, not... whatever this is.

What actually surprises me the most is that this wasn't a joke after all lol
