The next update for DST will be available next week on July 27th at 10am Pacific time.

Skill Spotlight: Wormwood, Wolfgang, Woodie

Highlights:

  • Wolfgang Skillset added
  • Wormwood Skillset added
  • Woodie Skillset added
  • Survivors can now craft large Support Pillars to create areas safe from quake debris and cave ins.
  • Equipment forged from the Brightsmithy and Shadowcraft Plinth are now no longer prototype-able but can be repaired using specific repair kits.
    • When they reach a fully broken state, they can no longer be equipped until repaired.
  • Equipment changes:
    • Umbralla can now be activated on the ground to generate an area of effect rain barrier.  Please note that acid rain does not heal the Umbralla while it is activated like this.
    • Void Cowl and Void Robe no longer provide acid rain immunity.
    • Void Cowl and Void Robe no longer drain sanity when equipped.
    • Ramping shadow planar damage buff now only requires equipping Void Cowl instead of the full set.
    • Void Robe now blocks negative sanity auras (e.g. from monsters or other scary objects).
    • Brightshade weapon buffs now only require equipping Brightshade Helm instead of the full set.
    • Brightshade Helm now prevents Charlie attacks when standing in darkness.
    • Brightshade Armor now has minor damage reflection.
    • Dreadstone Armor and Dreadstone Helm no longer drain sanity when not self-repairing.

As always a big THANKS to everybody for all the feedback and bug reports during the beta period. We're aware that the changes in this update were going to be controversial and tricky and we appreciate all the feedback and suggestions to help get it to where it needed to be.

Of course, this update will also bring a new animated short, bug fixes and balance changes, and a new streaming item "Nouveau Thulecite Suit" as well.

See you Thursday!

It's really saddening. I think I used up all the words I had about how upset this update makes me, so no use blabbing.

I am excited to see Wormwood in a short though.

Will we get an explanation what made the studio decide to go in this direction? Aside from money of course, there's no escaping that anywhere. Is a stream in plans?

is there something in particular about skill trees that spells monetary gain for you, aside from the simple act of updating a character to be more broadly appealing..?

To no ones surprise, Klei doesn't listen to the side of their fandom that doesn't want the game to be objectively easier.

At least skill tree code is mostly in tuning so you can tweak values if you so choose to reduce their importance / give them a drawback, which I'll probably end up doing for personal usage, it is a sandbox afterall

Skill trees are just a cheap tactic to make weak characters stronger to sell new skins.maxresdefault.thumb.jpg.b740d236e150210fba35954aa1fb2e28.jpg

I mean skill trees have a broader appeal to more casual players therefore it has a higher chance to attract players who might not give a game like don't starve another look so no doubt this would make them more money. This is coming from someone who likes their addition btw.

i think this is super silly

What is? People find skill trees appealing it's why they're popular and popular things make money what's hard to understand about that?

Making money isn't a bad thing so I hope your not viewing that as negative.

1. Game becomes easier. There was enough discussion for us to accept it as fact, I think. Easier means less people quit due to lack of skill or time/dedication to improve, more people will buy skins.

2. It gives rewards for doing nothing (I know you will be playing during that time, I just mean you don't have to actively gain the points) which is enough of a carrot to hold attention of people who don't have motivation to play just for playing and need a reward every now and then to not turn the game off. 2 hours clocked, refund not available.

3. Stepping away from core values, which means leaving the niche, opening up to more casual players who would not play the game if it stayed rooted in what it originated from. The players the game needs to make more money.

Forgive me if I explained myself poorly, it's 2 am. Please note I do not exclude all the other reasons. I'm just confident money is one of them. There could have very well been an agreement between developers that this is what they want the game to be, more casual, easier, easier to learn, more fun to a group of people. I'd like to hear them say it outright. So we're not left guessing like I am right now. I also accept that I might be wrong. Maybe the cash is looking great, and they just wanted to change the game because reasons. I'd like to know those reasons, but I still believe reaching more people, so they get more sales is way too probable in the world we live in.

Sorry for making a ruckus. I do not want to cause drama under what should be a nice announcement.

Probably one of my favorite updates in a while.

It seems that we are getting dreadstone pillar variant, we can assume that it doesn't degrade as it wouldn't make sense for it to require such a rare material otherwise.
We will just have to wait and see.
