Current Updates Thoughts

Recommended Posts

I tend to be an avid lurker when it comes to most social media stuff and what not but with the current two updates on the From Beyond Arc I thought that I should give my two cents/feelings.

Now personally, I think that the content added is nice, however, the fact that the developers have had to say that they will rework current stuff added in the future is kind of disappointing because you would think that the stuff released in an update wouldn't need an update to be good, right? Take the Umbralla for example, it is pretty much just a hand eyebrella that doesn't lose durability during acid rain, but instead repairs it. That's it. We get some new armor, which I don't really have any problems with, and we get a new weapon/tool, the shadow reaper. I know that in the stream Thursday that they said that they didn't want the reaper to be op by when you use it on crops/plants it puts the items in your inventory...but this is supposed to be an end game item, is it not? We have to kill fuelweaver for the rifts to activate (ignoring the "turn off/on whenever you want" settings), but all it does tool-wise is just make it slightly easier to pick stuff. I feel that it almost falls under the same category as the shoevel, but the shoevel is just a disappointing tool. The lunar side of items I feel is fine. The armor, sword, bomb, and maybe the staff I think are all relatively decent/good, except for the smasher which is pretty good. But the shoevel is lacking. I'm not fully sure, but I think it has the 33% increased efficiency that other tools of its type has, but digging and hoeing only take one swing.

Besides all that, I agree with others that updates should have more "time in the oven" before either a beta or release. I wouldn't mind waiting an extra month or two for a beta to come out as long as we get a heads up/update or something and maybe the same for beta to release. I just wish that stuff wasn't added, changed/nerfed to useless, and then just being released and fixed in a future update instead of just waiting/taking more time and fixing the problem with said mechanic or item.

I disagree with this point. We already have the lazy forager that we can use together with the reaper. The reaper does save an insane amount of time when gathering grass/twigs/berries/bananas when combined with the lazy forager.

They have buffed the lazy forager to being able to be refuelled too so there shouldnt be any issues using it.

They are right not to buff the reaper too much. Its a very good tool/weapon as is. But yeah its nice to know that klei are gonna to fix the umbralla. I think they just didnt have time to make it a deployable protection after reading the beta forums advice.

I did freak out abit and criticize Klei for the way they handled acid rain but on self-reflection, klei made the update functional in the time frame they had left before their release deadline. So klei did fair enough.

That being said we better get some good QoL updates to this content or ill be back on the war path again :wilsoalmostangelic:

New update → new items → "useless" → time goes by → new items = new meta.

idk what would make a hand eyebrella meta.  The hand slot is the weapon slot, unless you're doing pure catapult setups or something I don't see a world where you give up your hand slot.

Presuming it changes to be a deployable umbrella that no longer takes up a hand slot then it would be

New update => new items => actually useless => patches items => new meta.

Which shows that the feedback loop works.

I find it weird how little time you actually spend near the rifts, both lunar and shadow. Sure you can farm pure horror and mine pure brilliance (just noticed both have pure in their name, neat), but that's all there really is to do. The main activities of the rifts occur elsewhere in the world. I think I heard Klei plans on going back and adding things to the rifts, so this might just be another "not getting the full picture" type deal. Or maybe the rift isn't meant to be the main point of interest, if the point of rifts are to change up the world then I don't mind that, but there needs to be more things changing across the world.

While some concerns over the equipments and rifts on their own have been relaxed with Klei looking to go on them again soon, I do believe the vast majority of what I consider as flawed in this update that had yet so much potential is just gonna go under the same rug as the Pirate Raids never to see the light of improvements…

Pessimist sure but I don’t have reasons to believe otherwise with such letdowns, it's only one more content update to my counter of "looking forward the next if it’s worth it to start activity playing again" so might as well just be the end of the new arc at this point if waiting is all there is to it.

We have to wait for all updates? I get that we have to wait a bit longer for the fixes but I doubt it'll take much longer than if Klei fest hadn't taken place and they had delayed the update a week.

All Things considered, the moon quay update was pretty good. It brought new boating equipment and docks to the game. And in comparison to the monkey raids the devs specifically stated they'd be working on fixing this update and adding new effects to the rifts.

This mind set the community seems to be having rn isn't helping anyone.

It’s lame to only let happy feedback in and I probably speak for a few here that it’s not being hypocrite to share complains over additions, changes or development state if we feel there’s outstanding issues. It wouldn’t help at all to just stay quiet when we feel something's undercooked, got burnt afterward, oops, or stale especially when repeated. Instead share your thoughts, respectfully, and there will be plenty room for showing excitement directly on releases and when users feel listened to.

I dont think it is. All new gears both lunar and shadow are the lowest tier or low for new content to come. Think about it, other than defeat CC or AFW to unlock new chapter. all you have to do is to kill some enemies that have health about 800~1250.

That is just equivalent to kill a beefalo, which only enough to get you fed 2 day. So no, those are just lowest tier or low enemies for new content, they shouldnt be OP at any mean. I dont think the new armor deserve to be tier 3 shadow for maxwell at all.

The new mobs do have new attack pattern which make combat fun. Still dodge an hit, but with each of them have unique way to do so.

If you want my “Honest” no filtered Opinion, I think that Klei Devs are probably a bit Burned out working on DST, they don’t have that same Fire & passion as they had when they first started the franchise, they probably see DST as an old game that they’re still just trying to Maintain-

They aren’t truly going “Full Force” with Concept Ideas, Gameplay Changes, New Mobs, New Weather seasons Etc..

Because DST is an Old game they’ve been working on for quite a long time now.

For Comparisons sake it’s like if the Developers of the Batman games were still adding new content to 2009’s Arkham Asylum.

RATHER than coming up with new complete game changing concepts and ideas that warrant releasing a Brand New game, and I strongly feel like that’s something that’s Missing from DST..

The Devs are Burned out, in addition to trying “Cautiously” not to ruffle too many feathers within their already established DST Community with changes like Lunar Rifts/Shadow Rifts/Pirate Raids.

I would LOVE to be proven wrong and Klei devs reveal they plan to continue supporting DST for Years to come.

But as long as they Treat it like an old game getting free updates, instead of going into it with heart, soul & passion as if they had just released a “DS 2” and now need to support this new release game with patches and dlc for the next 1-3 years, We won’t ever see the kind of Shipwrecked/Hamlet sized updates fans are hoping DST gets someday.

Personally I was hoping they’d do more Lunar Island/Return of Them sized Updates.. as in add a new larger land mass out at sea with new mobs, weather etc with each Update chain.

For example “Forged Firelands” just a big Lunar Island sized land mass full of Fire type mobs where the grounds glowing with cracks of lava, maybe reuse some Forge mobs.. this would give things like Wigfrids fireproof song or Scalemail Armor more useage.

Sadly I don’t think we’ll be getting these Lunar Island sized expansions because I honestly feel like Klei is burned out with DST.

Which is a Shame, because I’d bet if they released a DS 2 instead they’d be going into it “Full force” with great updates/patches.

Rather then rushed deadline schedules, content left unpolished or cut for time constraints- Etc..

I totally agree! Negative feedback is way more important than positive feedback. But there is a line between helpful negative feedback and complaining unconditionally that I think some people have crossed. Complaining about things that haven't even happened yet/having to wait for updates (the only reason they released terrors below earlier is because of Klei fest) is crossing that line for me.

Idk maybe I'm just sad that some of the community seems to be losing passion for don't starve.

I don't think this is the case I think it's less they're burned out and more so they want to shake things up without upsetting the current balances too much. They don't seem to sure on where balances should lie but it seems like they have a game plan but the balance of that game plan is what I feel is the most worrying.

DTS= DS2, ds and dst differ so much that it's a bit painful for me to play regular ds because, outdated characters, the old crafting menu, the absence of the sea, the lack of a normal vegetable garden, the moon and other new knowledge and qualities of life, dst characters (especially wurt) does not allow me to enjoy the game as before, So many a lot of good things happened in dst , and it is strikingly different from ds and therefore has the right to be called ds2

I would rather a big QOL update 1st, then we go back again at content updates. Consoles should be prioritized at some point (y'know, not on topic but a feedback always welcome), which is my main platform, and i can't play.
