Should DST get achievements?

Recommended Posts

So, recently i was thinking about possibility of DST finally getting achievements.Yes i know it's not a new idea and was suggested multiple times and was denied by Klei, however i think times have changed. Before that main arguement against achievements was not giving player exact goal so they will have one for themselves. However recently the more DST updates we get less this arguement holds, first we got Wilson rework with actual goals pointed out by game itself to unlock new abilities, now (beta spoilers)

Spoiler

we got a full on bestiary + list of all items in the game that you have to unlock by progressing, yes it's not technically exactly setting a goal for the player but filling bestiary itself can be a goal on it's own and isn't actually that far from achievements system.

After all that, what do you personally think about achievements getting added for DST?

The only achievement needed in the base game:

The achievements made up a fun part of events but in the normal game, not so much. I will be annoyed once the scrapbook comes along since it will contain a plethora of items which are character-specific, hence they will cause an eye-sore, much like the clutter in the overhauled crafting menu. :v

Initially the scrapbook felt off but on a second thought it might be fun to run around and discover tidbits of information in the game. Hopefully. >_>

"klei tried achievements and they failed" is a myth; what klei rejected was explicit objective markers (e.g. "survive 3 nights" written on the hud) and this was over a decade ago when the game was completely unrecognizable compared to today

personally I do wish the game had achievements, it's funny because the console achievements are actually already in the code of the pc version so everything klei has to do is use them

The scrapbook in the game already functions as an achievement system, although a frustrating and clumsy one. With the game's size nowadays, completionists would likely need around 300 hours of gameplay, which is an adequate amount of content for the base-game price. Whether or not they will return to the game is uncertain. A new achievement system wouldn't be too bad after all, compared to the scrapbook. At the very least, we can enjoy a few amusing lines out of it.

Going for achievements does incentivize me enough continue playing even when I am facing a bit of burn out, but it usually makes the burn out last longer. Especially if the difficulty of an achievement makes me bitter. I recently maxed out the recipe book, which sort of tracks my progress like an achievement, but I was intensely frustrated with bad bird seed rng and waiting on crops to grow because I just wanted it to be over. The recipes aren't even that difficult and I never would do it again.

Personally, I like creating self imposed challenges like singleplayer survival mode with no server rollbacks or completing adventure mode in DS. This way provides a challenge that is within my interests with parameters I think are fun.

Don't Starve wouldn't benefit from explicit achievements in my opinion.

Y'all do know devs can hide achievements until unlocked. This would prevent them from being used as a guide if that's what the problem is. Anyway, while we're on this topic I might as well list some I would like to see:

Spoiler

Obviously there should be one for every boss killed, every crafting station crafted, every year survived (or just 1 and 10) killing ancient fuel weaver/celestial champion (if there is a real ending beating the game).

-Beat every boss (beat the game) without using rollback.

-Survive 1/10 Years without using rollback.

-Use an armor synergy

-Eat your characters favorite food

-Discover the ruins

-Discover the Lunar island

-Set sail

-Tame a beefalo

-Finish a hunting trail

-Activating the ancient archive

-Discover the atrium

-Grow an above average tree

-Revive yourself

-Deliver the final blow to a boss with your fist

-Die 10 times in 1 world

Etc very creative achievements could be created

Well. I really like idea of achievements as a non-invasive element of the game. Some people could use achievements as signpost what to do in arranged order, some could use it as sign what they should do to "end" game. As long they won't be feature to unlock next stage of game (Eg. Kill 5 Moose/Goose to unlock Bearger) they are ok for me.

But hey I can live without official achievements 'cause Kyno and Adai made awesome mod with them (also they updating it aka still development).

As of now I haven't played in a while, it just feels pointless to play the game beyond a certain point of time if there is nothing to archieve. Of course you will eventually unlock them all, but being able to help your friends earn something that stays throughout the worlds is something admirable in my opinion.

Plus frankly I absolutely loved the achievements they did for Oxygen Not Included or Griftlands, they're pretty challenging so not that it needs to essentially do the same for DST knowing it has some absolute basics to throw in the middle like one for each boss, but tons of spice could be added there to also think about fun ones (make all food in individual Crock Pots at the same time, etc... surprise me !).

Can already see special worlds challenge of doing all achievements or categories of them in a world. I don't really see what could motives being against this sort of optional things.

I can already see achievement hunters installing dst, looking at a steam guide exactly like this and suddenly 100%ing the game with 4 hours played

Kinda the norm for games and their "achievement hunters" - there will always be plenty people that don't care about the legitimacy of the method if they can have them with minimal effort and in record time (empty "bragging rights"). KLei also makes it easy providing said console commands. Hence is to be expected, if Achievements will ever be implemented into DST, to have a plethora of people getting them through such shenanigans, making their meaning rather superfluous (well, much more than such concept already is); likewise invalidating their purpose (and ultimately, their very implementation).

you sound like you haven't ever played any game with achivements whatsoever or if you did you got achivements on accident, because if you didn't knew it's possible to cheat for every achivement in every game ever on steam using free programms, does that means steam should turn off achivements completely????no, because most people don't get achivements just for the sake of getting achivement even if they cheat, when people try to do achivement they do it to challenge themselves in a way that also will be displayed by steam itself to other people and show how many other people did this same challenge, fact that some people will cheat doesn't mean everyone will cheat and most of the time it will be a proof of people's accomplihsments(and before you say that "just take screenshot!" not everybody does a 1000 screnshots every time they get an achivement and then post it on steam)
