Wicker Animation Analysis

Recommended Posts

So the new rework animation just dropped, and there was a surprisingly large amount of lore for a character rework, so heres some speculation and stuff I noticed!

First, how did Wicker get the library in the first place? I have 2 theories. Do note most of what I say is more speculation. First, she simply made it herself or its her family property. I believe that the Library being given to Wicker is more likely, since I dont see how Wicker got the money for all the books and to build it, since if she had the money for that, she would be able to afford better clothes, and she wouldnt spend her time tending to the library. What I think is more likely is that the library was given to her from her family, which can be supported by the potraits in the library, though it could just be of famous authors. Theres also the small detail she had to go through some files to recognise the terrorbeak, which wouldnt make sense if she had studied it herself in the past. But what I think is more interesting is her source of her shadowy magic, but first lets look at her Pelontrix summoning basement.

First off, theres a weird amount of Eye imagery, from the amulet to the floor of this room, which reminds me a lot of the mural eye from the Metheus Puzzles. My theory is that Wicker's shadow knowledge came from her family, whos studying the secrets of the Constant and Them, but for now lets move on to some small details a lot of ppl seemed to have miss.

First, Wicker probably had some knowledge on the Survivors' vanishing, since the gramaphone is locked behind a case, but more interesting is the bowl and spoon at the right of the room. Why? Because it is very similiar to the bowl in Warly's animation. Thats all I noticed from the short, what do you guys think?

maybe is just a coincidence... but that symbol in the factory, wagstaff's door and the radio is kinda similar to the symbols in the floor and lamps in wicker's secret room

It seemed like a clock with a peculiar style, Wilson's attic had exactly the same thing

I would be inclined to believe that, but Klei uses weird loops like that sometimes in their art. You can see it in the game's title, Wortox's horns, Wanda's clocks and a lot more. I guess its possible they have a similiarity, but its unlikely

We should really centralise all of the theories into one thread though... theres like 3 right now

Also don't forget that one of DSTs trademark symbols is the (imperfectly curved) portal spiral. There are spirals in every short, in the fences, the windows, the mirrors or whatever. Some of the spirals have meanings, but some are a purely aestethic choice.

It's the old New York State Library, burned down in 1911.  It's government property; she's a government employee.

Oh my bad, I thought it was just a regular building, i didnt know it was an actual real life building. If thats the case that makes more sense

Had this been Wickerbottom's personal little eccentric archive of occult secrets, or even moreso a family heirloom of knowledge, she/her family would surely keep it in her/their own residence(s) rather than stowed away in the public library where it would be at far greater risk of someday being discovered or exposed by wear and tear of the establishment, especially given Wickerbottom's own old age to watch over it.

Imo this archive of hidden knowledge with spooky collected artifacts must either have been passed down from a previous owner of the library - or more likely, as was everyone's first hunch, a secret society thing from the medallion used to open the hidden door and recurring eye symbol.

But then that question opens up the rabbit hole of who else (relevant and part of the cast) could have been in that secret society!

(Love the irony of the character who always has her eyes closed being in the cult that has a eye as its symbol, gives me Gravity Falls vibes.)
