What? Could you rephrase that? I don't understand what you mean.(I don't mean to sound rude)

You can feed birds with eggs and you will get egg for that.Give bird almost spoiled egg and you will get fresh egg for that. Its like that cause eggs are tagged as meat in game code, and bird accepts any meat. Edited by _Q_

I thought that's what you meant ^^I added that to my solution. "Birds will not accept Monster Meat, or Eggs"

After testing out the Cage myself I've found it to be a little too handy. My early assumptions were incorrect about it not being overpowered.

There is a very simple fix for this and one that I think is elegant to boot! Take some cues from real life; birds don't lay eggs when you jam food down their gut, so why do the birds in Don't Starve?

Set up some magical game writing **** (yeah, I'm not a programmer or developer, so I don't know the lingo) that enables a more realistic bird!

Bird lays X amount of eggs over X amount of days (e.g, chance to lay one egg in one day), egg laying is random and there should be a chance for the bird to not lay eggs at all. Bird needs to be fed in order to keep alive like any pet/animal. If bird is unfed there is 0% chance for egg laying, and after X amount of days of not being fed the bird dies.

This way you can't simply throw in trash and get an egg, it will randomly lay an egg every now and then, but you need to actually feed it to keep it alive/have a chance of laying eggs.

Next person converted to the dark side.

I need more.

I have never been so popular for doing the mod thing before... this is nice.I think the bird cage- with eggs. Is like all new things put into the game. It takes time to balance it out. I wouldn't say that the traps are OP though. Mostly because you need them in the early days to get yourself set up.Though once you get things like the bird cage unlocked it can be easy to survive if you know tricks like sitting on ponds.Though I do agree it would make more sense if the birds laid on a time basis rather than a-I just shoved food at you basis.

I basically play ever patch or every other patch for a bit before looking on the forums and every time I end up using some strat that is named as overpowered on the forums. I was berry farming when that was op, honey farming when that was op and guess what I was doing midwinter before I looked on here...OP is very obnoxious but he is also correct, I prefer Pokey's proposed solution the most so far. Anything short of just making monster meat inedible to birds is going to encourage multiple birdcages but they aren't trivial to make, gold/meat is fairly valuable. I would maybe put some gears or a red gem into the bird cage recipe. I think there's a more general problem too in that monster meat is very plentiful and the most efficient monster meat conversion strat is always going to be strong, eg. after we can't spam it to birds we're probably going to be living on jerky, which isn't bad either. I think the drop rate just needs reducing, or make larger groups of enemies more focused on eating eachother's remains which would keep the balance similar early but reduce your monster meat surfeit later. Warrior spiders need to roam too, eventually. I have also been sleeping next to a nest in my game like op.Finally, people saying rabbits are op are wrong in my opinion, for the reason that OP said- there's no way to concentrate rabbit density so you're limited in your rabbit farming rate. Noone accidentally accumulates stacks of morsels.PS: this is all a bit moot as the game is currently MUCH harder than normal because of the lack of wormholes, next patch their return will make it easier again. Wormholes need to eat health as well as sanity.

When you started getting snobby about settings, that was obnoxious. And wrong, since I've played 3 games so far this patch on normal settings: first one I got stuck on low hp vs t3 spiders so couldn't recover health and some hounds finished me off, second one I died stupidly to some Beefalo, third I'm 30 days in and started egg spamming like 4 days into winter when I realised I could. So you can appreciate that some strategies are OP without going on custom settings, I independently found them all on standard. There's so much ****posting in this forum, half of all posts in feedback threads are "this is for casuals mememe". Needs a sticky thread entitled "this is why this game being for casuals isn't a relevant post".What does "all is on good way" mean?Edit: just to explain a bit more clearly, I think in general strong strategies will be strong on any setting level, sure I COULD have done something other than berry farm, or egg spam but they were optimal across a range of difficulties so I ended up doing those.

What does "all is on good way" mean?

More people realizing OPnes of birdcage and hope for the fix in the next update.Edit: I mentioned my game settings only to show that birdcage strategy is OP, some players can have tons food and don't put that much attention to birdcage and use eggs only to make gunpowder. It was hard to explain OPnes of birdcage to some of them.It was not meant to make myself better player or anything like that. Edited by _Q_

Possible fix for the bird cage would be giving the eggs a meat value of 0.25 (Half that of a morsel, i think the egg is currently worth 0.5) so you can't make meatballs(Meatballs needs a meat value between 2.5 and 3, meat and monster meat are worth 1, morsels worth 0.5) with it unless you used 1 egg + 2 morsels + 1 monster meat, or 1 meat + 2 eggs + 1 monster meat. This was you need some normal meat to make it an effective food source.EDIT: First recipe wouldn't work because it's only a value of 2.25

I cannot replace morsels with eggs to make honeyed ham. It works with one monster meat, two morsels and one honey and does not work with one monster meat, two eggs and one honey. I get honey nuggets instead.

Yea this is to stop the using of only monster meat and a birdcage to make meatballs, and is completely unrelated to honeyed ham.

If eggs had the same meat value of morsels as you said, this should work. I should have been more clear, sorry.

Thought some logic through and recalculated some things, eggs seem to be worth 0.5 as i said, while morsels are worth ~0.625. (Honeyed ham can be logically assumed to have a meat requirement of 2.25 as two morsels and one monster meat would reach that, while two eggs would not) and meatballs can be made with four morsels (0.625 * 4 = 2.5) but can also be made using 3 eggs and one monster meat (3 * 0.5 + 1 = 2.5) so both recipes i mentioned earlier would actually work if the eggs were tweaked to 0.25 (1 + 0.25 * 2 + 1 = 2.5 and 1 + 0.625 * 2 + 0.25 = 2.5)EDIT: Nope, all my logic is flawed, I just realised meatballs can be made with berries also, and the wiki says morsels are 0.5, so eggs probably aren't counted as meat... My mind hurts, I give up on trying to logic this stuff out (..for now) Edited by ManofShadows

People think this is OP when you can just as easily throw boomerangs at birds/rabbits or farm and store berries to also make meatballs?I mean hell, if you have enough monster meat to make meatballs you probably have enough silk to make boomerangs/bird traps as well.

But the boomerang and berries need constant maintainance (building new boomerangs and fertilizing), while the bird stays forever and works without having to do anything.

You probably have been on this wiki page but you should check the Food Guide as well.

Edit: Played with it a bit and found this:

Hello,It is my first post here, i hope don't forget some rule.I'm playing since a couple of day, so i'm still ignorant of some mechanisms of the game, but i have too the feeling the cage is too powerfull. It's making the monster meat common ingredient for recipe, not something who create hesitation. Or, the choices are good for fun. No choice is sad and boring.I prefer so the solutions who create choice, not the solutions who just block the use of monster meat. For exemple : just one monster meat by day, or by X days, or death of the bird if too many monster meat (score of health for the bird ?)If after that people make many bird cage for have many eggs every day, it is a choice acceptable, prove of a certain balance.Because one cage is actually enough for all the time, and i find it sad : why even bother making another cage ? One cage make all the use, forever with no cost after build it.Death of the bird can also make a way to give a cost to the cage at long time, not too high if not too frequent, but one who balance the gain of seed and egg.The recycle seed or egg must keep their spoiling state, because it is too easy if not. Bird is not a recycle machine.I hope i'm clear : i'm french and it's more easy for me reading english than speak it. But the game is in beta so comments are important.
