This thread is about the atmosphere you feel while playing DST but also the emotion that the game give you while playing it

I'm pretty sure crickets are in DST

We never actually see crickets or owls in either of these games though.

The emotional value of the game like how wonder song leaves me with hope, or how FNAF gives me dread.

And I want this thread to be about that.

But also the atmosphere this game gives off.

And maybe I'm just overly emotional.

I meant the "EMTION" you wrote in the title before :P

I just misspelled emotion okay.

The old seasonal bosses are atmospherically different from the raid bosses for me.

The old seasonal bosses are more aggressive and just come out of nowhere and also not that hard.

But the raid bosses for me feel like an adventure a quest to free the no eye deer, kill the tyrannical queen bee, or kill or give a gift to the greedy antlion, they felt I actually going on an adventure, and the bosses felt like actual bosses.

I like the raid bosses more because they give me the freedom to choose my own experience and also the fact that I feel actual emotion toward them.

Different biome affect how I feel like, the Marsh biome make me feel despair and terror but also has this hopeful comedic feel to it, the lunar island feels calm and peaceful vibe yet unnerving, the Savana fill me with vast ambition yet so it small, the chess makes me nostalgic of a bygone era, the forest is peaceful yet it fills me with loneliness, the grassland makes me daydream of a better place, the mosiac left me with confused but also inspiration, the rocky land fills me with aspiration and determination, the dessert fills me with emptiness, the deciduous forest fills me with joy and playfulness of autumn, the ocean fills with me with an adventurous spirit but also the horror of the deep, the cave swamp made me feel sticky, while the rocky plain and the stalagmite terrain bored me, the mushtree forest and the sunken forest fills me with wonder, the lunar grotto fills me with wonder, the ancient archive fills me with intrigued and fascination, all the ruin feel mysterious and fascinating, the Hermit Island make me feel Sympathy and friendship, and finally the Waterlogged fills me with awe and insparation.

This takes way too long.

I totally get where you're coming from; DST is this interesting combination where it's technically a survival game, but it's also weirdly...chill...(at least, if you're playing by yourself or with only a few good friends.  With people you don't know running all over the place, it can be chaotic).  And of course it can be as chill or as chaotic as you want, depending on the world settings.  Some people put it on Creative Mode, so they can build megabases in peace.  Others deliberately ramp up spiders, clockworks and wildfires.  That's another one of the things I've always loved about this game--the customizability of it.

Anyway. I also love the overall atmosphere of the game--the feeling of exploration, of the beauty of nature tinged with loneliness, being out in the wilderness having to fend for yourself but also being able to do what you want...and yes, I totally agree on the birch forest biome.  It's one of my favourites. It's adorable and cozy, and I've made secondary bases there or hung out there all summer, many times. (I do the same thing with the Cherry Forest, for the same reasons).

And as for the sound design--YES, the rainy day thing. The second I realised that the sound of raindrops on the umbrella _actually sounded like the sound of real raindrops on a real umbrella_, I was like "OMG! HEART!".  (Also because I originally grew up in a very rainy place, but where I am now it only rains rarely, so that sound/atmosphere is nostalgic to me.)  I dunno about night ambiance; there's a mod that adds night creatures and their sounds so I'm guessing there might not be much in DST, if that mod was made?  (I don't remember its name.)

And the "chill" atmosphere of the times when there's nothing urgent to do, nothing's attacking and you can just hang...do you have ANY idea how many pictures I've taken of those moments?

Yes, cats are usually involved in these pictures.  They make me feel happier and chiller in real life, after all.  :)

So, yeah, I think I can see where you're coming from, with this "atmosphere of DST" thing...  :D

Mind you I do also take pictures of chaos as well--I've got a whole unofficial series called "Ah, spring!" where hounds/frogs/moslings/frogs/beefalo are all fighting each other and lightning has set something on fire and bodies are flying all over the place, but the chill ones are my fave.

...Notorious

I LOVE this game and its style especially with the characters instead of having a voice just have instruments lol. Its like a game Tim Burton would make and I love his work. I love the spring work theme.

I like to think that, lorewise, is because Charlie's human side tries to help the survivors in their struggle by giving them times to rest peacefully.

Thank you for this long reply.

I totally get where you're coming from; DST is this interesting combination where it's technically a survival game, but it's also weirdly...chill...

Yes, the way DST design where you can just gather supply chill at based and other pointless things the only thing they ask of you is to prepare for the seasonal bosses but you still can just ignore them deerclop just let it destroy decoy base, bearger just lure it with food, moose/goose just have a vacation base for spring, antlion just have a vacation base at the oasis or give antlion gift.

8 hours ago, CaptainChaotica said:

Anyway. I also love the overall atmosphere of the game--the feeling of exploration, of the beauty of nature tinged with loneliness, being out in the wilderness having to fend for yourself but also being able to do what you want

Yes, the constant is such a beautiful place and the atmosphere makes you want to sleep all day with its beautiful music cool atmosphere I love joining random public sever it's called DST after all, the feeling of being calm in a chaotic environment feels so transcend.

8 hours ago, CaptainChaotica said:

yes, I totally agree on the birch forest biome.  It's one of my favourites. It's adorable and cozy, and I've made secondary bases there or hung out there all summer, many times. (I do the same thing with the Cherry Forest, for the same reasons).

I love how the forest is stuck in eternal autumn perfect with some pumpkin spice latte and some pumpkin cookie, It is also the same reason why I like the waterlogged biome so much it looks like it's stuck in eternal spring which is my favorite season also I like the smell of figs.

And as for the sound design--YES, the rainy day thing. The second I realised that the sound of raindrops on the umbrella _actually sounded like the sound of real raindrops on a real umbrella_, I was like "OMG! HEART!".  (Also because I originally grew up in a very rainy place, but where I am now it only rains rarely, so that sound/atmosphere is nostalgic to me.)

Same, love the sound design of DST it adds so much to the game atmosphere I really like the summer and spring filter it made the game more colorful and vibrant.

And the "chill" atmosphere of the times when there's nothing urgent to do, nothing's attacking and you can just hang...do you have ANY idea how many pictures I've taken of those moments?

I love all of these pictures I usually tend not to terraform the constant because I love all the natural beauty of it especially when you find a really beautiful place unexpectedly in a boring biome, but sometimes I just wanna make my own set-piece but it so supplies and time-consuming that I rarely to it.

the atmosphere I feel in DST is like a strong cool breeze on the hill with flowers all over, staring at the storming thunderous clouds with no lighting as I feel the humidity in the air but not a little drizzle of rain looking at in the distance imagining the storm that never came.

That's me too, pretty much--rather than digging up all the berry bushes, grass tufts, saplings, etc. and putting them in nice little rows, I tend to leave them where they spawned and go to THEM.  (This also has the added bonus of:  If a fire happens, it'll only wipe out a FEW berry bushes at once!)  I deal with this by living close to them--sometimes very close.  My current (main) camp has berry bushes and grass growing right out of the carpet.

It is very beautiful, thank you for taking time out of your day and building such an amazing set piece, and showing it to us.

Here are my feeling and what the atmosphere of the 4 seasons is to me.

Autumn the stating season of the constant the season of calmness and peacefulness when the ocean is full of fallounder and the Deciduous forest filled with no-eyed deer catcoon and glommer it feels the most autumn the season to gather and prepare for winter, it fills me with glee and wonders as I go explore the island and the cave finding a pet and making friends with Pig and Bunnymen alike, the sound of falling leaf and bearger feet as it walks through the forest trying to find something to eat, and as the night come we know it's time to start the hallowed nights, as the cold wind blow the sail and as I set into the ocean to find the brine shoal the school of fish swimming through the ocean wave as the first snowflax drop from the sky I know it.

Winter can be both a wonderful snow dream or a harsh frozen land as the no-eyed deer started to grow antlers and as Klaus left his loot stash and Deerclop making others deers jealous, as I hear the jingle of the bell and see the bright color light on the winter feast tree I start wrapping gifts and eating food from the masonry oven fill with holiday cheer and stuffing I go fishing for the famous Ice Bream fish I see the Pengull migrate from a distant land and some snowbirds in the snow cover field and all the lakes are frozen over, as I come out of the cave I see the snow started to melt and a drizzle of the rain hit my face I know it.

Spring the storm starts with thunder and lighting then comes the rain the moose/goose started to lay eggs, the mating season for beefalo and the season of love but there is no valentine day in the constant is there, the flower started to bloom the butterfly and the bee started to come out and play, as it also the most plentiful time of the year the farm soil fill with 12 giant fruit and veggie, the time to play in the rain with a pretty parasol or an umbrella while wearing a raincoat and a rain hat, the waterlogged is the perfect vacation spot for the season and I might even find the beautiful Bloomfin Tuna or hide in the ruin of the cave, as the storm roll by and the sun getting brighter I know it.

Summer as the Crow people set up a Carnival for the Midsummer Cawnival as the dragon fly and antlion argue who is the real seasonal boss of this season, The icebox and the saltbox filled with food wearing a floral shirt and sitting neatly near the Endothermic Fire Pit, as I play the carnival game to buy food from the stand and go fishing to increased wetness so I might not die from overheating and maybe even find the hot Scorching Sunfish, or hide in the cave and ruin rush and avoid cave-ins from the antlion, as the oasis fills with water I find that all the cactus have bloomed, running around with my whirly fan as I see that the leaf started to change colors I know it now.

The end of the year.

This concludes my 500 words essay about what a year in the constant feels like.

I love DST because it's a game I can hop onto and just play casually...I used to play competitive games and even though they were a rush, there were alot of times I was yelling at My screen or broke a controller or 2 lol. You aren't pressured to kill bosses..you can just build and lose hours without realizing..it's great for decompressing..but it does feel lonely even though together is in the title.

Thunderbirds count.

Why is my owl joke popping up?

This is my feeling and thought about Pearl and her island.

So far from the coast, the feeling of a lost loved one sent in a message in a bottle from an island that looks like a piece of a whole, there lies a woman whose love has been forgotten by a missing treasure that lost its meaning, she tries day after day to find her lost treasure, but as time goes on thing worsen as the moon has fallen out of the sky, she is left there bitter and cold but not giving up until she finds him, plug all the Fissure with beautiful melodic shell, as she sees an intruder that has a confusing goal the only thing she can ponder is why they helping her as if the storm has rolled by the lonely seashore of her island the bee the bush the home and all that ail her has been fixed, she gives them her Pearl to give them to him but it seems that the storm has only started, as she waited and waited, they finally came by the intruder she now called friends and they give her the reply, it feels like she staring at the eyed of the storm and calmly smile at them, at last, she finally get her reply even if isn't she wanted, as she sent a message once more at the familiar shore not to find him but to find but to find her friends.

The feel of the DST for me is away changing but as of now I feel this feeling that I can't explain, it mix of melancholy warmth misty froggy, and bewilderment.

Does anyone know what emotion I'm feeling?

It is very beautiful, thank you for taking time out of your day and building such an amazing set piece, and showing it to us.

Here are my feeling and what the atmosphere of the 4 seasons is to me.

(a lot of lovely words about the seasons in DST.  I cut them out only because MY stuff is long enough already.  : P)

Awww, thanks.  :) I still have a lot of learning to do compared to the people who build those HUGE, elaborate, palacial megabases, but that Builder Challenge thread did get me a lot BETTER at building in DS/T than I was before.  :)

(long thing about the seasons and how I feel about them IRL/in DST, and showing how they change from one to another, in the spoiler below)

Spoiler

I totally agree about the feelings of the seasons...and in fact that's how I am with them in real life, too.  I live in an area with dramatic mountains, like, right smack there

dramaticbreakfast.thumb.png.8ce5ca4cf85b3ee0e893cb9a8ec64500.png

(a Google Maps view of my favourite family restaurant; literally less than a block from my house. This is in spring, I believe.)

and sagebrush

that blooms a beautiful purple, but only in the summer

(like the DST cactus!)

and I often find myself wanting to find a good spot, take pictures of _exactly the same area_ in each season, and then line them up together. (Why don't I just go ahead and do that?  I don't have a good camera.  : P)  I just love how each season has its own unique feel to it.  Which is exactly why I like living outdoors, on the surface, in EVERY season of DST.

Autumn:  I pretty much agree with what you said about the chillness; it's also why it's my fave season IRL (including also of course Halloween, Thanksgiving and my birthday).  I even drew autumn as the chillest season in my Four Seasons picture:

autumn.PNG.dc011fe15d137597d1bf81824984ea33.PNG

Notice that Wilson isn't running for his life or fighting anything, he's just hangin' out with Chester under a tree.  The colors are muted, leaves are falling, there's an adorable kitty trying to murder a butterfly...

There's nothing like when the air starts to have just that little _nip_ to it, it feels fresher somehow, overcast clouds making a dramatic background for colourful trees, and then there's the foods and smells that are unique to autumn.  Pumpkin pies and apple cider, etc.  (And roast turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce, if you live in America or Canada.)

Thank you for this amazing reply.

I don't know what else to say but you are really good at taking photographs.

Aww, thanks!  :)  The only reason I have so many is I started YEARS ago, in 2016...and I have a tendency to snap everything that catches my eye.  The season-transitional pictures I took purposely to make sure I HAD one for every season change (except summer, you can't really show that one).

Play a lot of a game you love and be a shutterbug at the same time; eventually you'll have this.  Heh.
