Shipwrecked or Hamlet

  1. 1. Should I play Shipwrecked or Hamlet first?

Depends on what kind of experience you want! SW is much closer to DS RoG, with a ton of parallels and similar mechanics, while Hamlet is meant to be a very different and extra challenging experience which recontextualizes old mechanics and items while bombarding you with entirely new ones.

Having experience with RoG will give you a big advantage for SW since you'll be able to predict the general idea of seasons, where to get certain resources, what to do with those resources, the purpose of certain new mobs, ways to restore your sanity, what you'll want to do to prepare food, etc. While Hamlet will instead mostly discard that knowledge you've learned from RoG, with entirely different season themes, where to get resources, what you want to do with them, what all these new mobs are for, how you're supposed to get sanity back, how you'll even get a permanent food source, etc.

One last note is that playing either DLC will help you prepare a bit for the other, though! They both have the same kind of boats, used in different ways of course, but either DLC will require you to use those boats and get comfortable with their mechanics.

Hamlet is significantly harder then Shipwrecked.. I think.

But do you want to sail oceans on a boat and go from island to island gathering supplies?

or do you want to venture through dense jungles full of man eating plants and hazard filled temples?

Thats pretty much the gist of it.

As a person who played Hamlet first, shipwrecked is the way to go. It's a completely new experience while still being close enough to the original- and introduces certain mechanics that are present in Hamlet in a less slap in the face way (******* trees...). It's also super fun and feels more complete. Hamlet will certainly be more fun after you play shipwrecked.

Bias disclaimer: Shiprwecked is my absolutely favortie game ever.

Both DLC's are pretty hard when you start playing them, even for experienced players coming from DST/RoG. But Hamlet's difficulty I'd say requires you to read wikis or watch guides, at least after you get past a number of days. Shipwrecked will also be difficult, as you know, all Don't Starve games are at first, but it's more ""chill"" to figure out. So I think it will be more fun to jump into it first. Plus it has the most beautiful coloring in all the games.

But also, once you know all you need to know about all DLC's, my judgement is that Shipwrecked is actually the hardest one. Not the hardest to figure out, but the one where I still die the most in the early days, before making meat effigies.

So really, there's no wrong answers, but personally I'd start out with the one that has given me the best experiences through and through (SW).
