Radioactive materials and everything that goes along with it!

Before you start reading please queue "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. Now lets rock... I mean talk....

I don't know bout everyone else, but I want radioactive materials. 

It should be dormant until harvested, but still have some radioactivity, its only use is fuel (producing mass amounts of heat) and once used it drops spent fuel (massively radioactive) which will have to be stored in lead lined rooms :D

Life-cycle

Mined --> Processed into fuel rods --> used in new heat producing building (sorry kids no new power generation but I wonder if I could use the steam turbine to figure something out :O)  --> used fuel drops as "Spent fuel" need to stored in bunker / lead lined rooms :D

Also will need new clothing (Radiation suit) :D

Also need new illness (Radiation sickness)

Again the goal here is an alternative to mass lava lakes and a fun new mechanic to build massive nuclear reactors out of :D

What does everyone think?

I think this is a great idea. And if you look at our nuclear power here on Earth, it's all about using steam anyways. The steam turbine might be "overused" in ONI, but it most certainly is the best form of power generation we have.

 

The game already has lead in it, so it can be used for radiation suits and nuclear powered rooms to prevent radiation escaping.

Nuclear materials generate heat, which we use to create steam that drives turbines to generate electricity.   All of our nuclear power plants work this way.  So.. I suspect that nuclear materials will keep the molten biome hot.  Maybe some of that neutronium in the molten biome will become plutonium.  Who knows?

New tile - concrete tile blocks radiation from spreading.

Radiation suit - protects from radiation and temperatures, uses steel, refined carbon and concrete to make.

Nuclear power plant - generates x energy and produces nuclear waste.

Barrel factory - makes barrels for storing the nuclear waste, barrels if left in the ground it may broke open and drop liquid or solid radium in the ground, hatches would always try to eat those barrels making them crash open.

Nuclear hatch - New hatch variant that eats this used radium to poop a radium renewed with atomic energy.

Radiation overlay similar to the temperature overlay but the green representing bad and blue representing good radiation levels.

Ion engine - uses ridiculos ammounts of energy only to propel rockets.

Rocket batery - make energy batterys for more fuel and rocket distance.

Radiation sensor - becomes active if radiation of this area reachs x number or above bellow.

Radiation exposure minor/medium/extreme - minor just give debuffs, medium makes the duplicant drop in the ground weakened and needs to be in med bay similar to heat stroke and then extreme needs the top tier medical station imediatly and some radiation medication if not threated dup dies.

 

 

 

Take a look at the data mining for the current nuclear related items being experimented with:

Centrifuge: Enriches uranium for use in a nuclear reactor.
Nuclear Reactor: generates tons of heat (e.g. for you to power a bunch of steam turbines via).

Or Lead.  Which is already in the game and can be made into metal tiles.  Of course, any material used to absorb radiation (i.e. shield you from it) will get hot from bombardment.  Thus while water would work, it would quickly become steam... ... which is how our nuclear power generators work.  Anyway..

Wouldn't you use lead in a radiation suit?  I know the vest they put on me when they take x-rays of my teeth has lead and not steel in it.

... or you can put some nuclear waste near some water, let it boil off, and send it through a steam turbine.  Hmmm.

Well, as much as I would love to see an ion engine.. there's this slight problem: You need something to ionize.  Unless you carry an ionizable material (like, say, water), your ion engine won't do anything once you're in the vacuum of space.

There's a reason why we use fossil fuels for so many of our vehicles.  Batteries, even the best batteries, carry only a fraction of the energy density of an equal mass in fossil fuels.  You would add less weight to a rocket by building a nuclear power plant inside it than you would adding the equivalent in batteries.  Sorry.  Unfortunately, I see this concept popping up a lot in real-world conversations.  Can you use batteries to run the electrical systems on a rocket? Certainly.  But until we can rewrite the laws of physics, batteries can't be used as a fuel for rockets.  There just isn't enough power for the weight.

No energy, otherwise it would be an I Win button, and I don't want that or is it required, I want another challenge, and the ability to build a nuclear generated steam turbine. This is what real nuclear reactors do, they play no part in creating electricity outside of generating heat.

Everything should be based around heat, radiation sickness should be a burn

Dormant material release slight heat, but can be mined without a suit in low concentration

Once processed its much more radioactive but won't kill you unless your handling the material without a suit like your a "Malon".

Once spent, its deadly to anyone without a suit, it should produce alot of heat and spread radiation sickness to a tile radius around it.

Lead Bunker tile sounds like the best mix :D

You're mostly correct.  Satellites have been using "Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators" since 1961.  They're still using heat to generate electricity, but steam turbines aren't a part of it.

It's still just using decay heat to create the electricity, and this use a special plutonium which we're near out of it, unless Thorium breeders (LFTR) become a reality :D

Well, we've built and operated one already.  Back in the late 50s or early 60s.  I'll have to look it up.  Anyway, we have built and run a thorium salt reactor with a good deal of success.  IMHO it didn't go anywhere because we couldn't use thorium to build bombs, so all the research money went into studying uranium and plutonium.

Yes the USA ran the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment at Oakridge laboratories in the 60s / 70s. It was run by Alvin Weinberg who was also the inventor of the current pressurized water reactors we used today which were ****. The test was only to prove the nuclear process worked, it did not process the solution among other things, but they did prove it works. The US shut down further research because (Their idiots) but it didn't produce plutonium for the military use for making bombs, which all current reactors do. They realized their mistake when the Chinese came to Oakridge in 2011 asking about MSRE and they're investing nearly all their resources into building a reactor in China. 

Think about this, in no other process do we use solid fuels on earth, its the oddest thing we have used for nearly 50 years, and probably the most wasteful, thankfully a LFTR (Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor) can burn up old radioactive material, in fact its the only process known fully utilize the potential of a material (its burned 100%, whereas uranium we use 0.09% of its ability).

Thorium breeder (LFTR) can produce the right type of plutonium for RTG and it can also produce medical Isotopes along with other materials for combating cancers, etc. Thorium is our salvation for power generation on earth, its what fuels our planet (molten core) and its so abundant you could grab a handful of dirt in your backyard and there is probably enough thorium in that to power your house for a year :D

 

How about if we take a simpler approach?

Like in "

  1. Mine Uranite Ore (No real radioactivity, doesn't do anything special really, counts as metal ore in terms of building)
  2. Refine to Uranite Fuel in Metal Refinery
  3. Build Uranite Fuel tiles
  4. If two of them touch they start decaying by producing heat (more Uranite neighbors, more decay), lose a little mass and convert some bigger mass to Spent Uranite. (Spawned as buried item below the fuel tile)

Now see how you manage that heat before the tiles melt.

Molten Uranite keeps the neighbor-rule, thus might keep getting hotter. => Core Meltdowns are no fun.

Plottwist: Spent Uranite starts decaying again when it melts, decays to

  • some gas to make matters even worse
  • or some liquid waste product
  • or some liquid metal

Plottwist 2: Radioactivity works like floral scent, but makes every dupe sick rather quickly, requires high-level-treatment.

Cool ideas.   I have also made similar threads in the past on feedback/suggestions about Nuclear Update theme.

My guess is this will be a DLC later.    New cool stuff also comes with no challenges/problems.   Such as  Nuclear Waste disposal and how to deal with it. (Containment)   Radiation Sickness etc.    Basically this entire mechanics/concept of Nuclear is a totally new content addition to the game in a form of a DLC.

Can't wait!  Excited for a Nuclear DLC

A Robotics DLC would also be cool.  Another one I have suggested.   Maybe Rise of Machines or Robots Rising DLC.

The nuclear technology should be on top of the Rocket technology. So i think it should be more complicated to built. Where it will be break into some parts to build. The turbine will be 1 of the parts. And some control circuit will be needed to control the immersion of the nuclear rod to control the amount of radioactivity. 

And the overall design shall be totally different from different people, just like the rocket build, instead of just putting a 4x4 building called "nuclear heater". For example, a cooling tower to be built on the surface, and the player can choose the amount of nuclear rod and number of turbine, pressure of steam to use, etc. (i dont know too much in deep for this part). 

The power will be needed to charge the new engine of the rocket, which increasing the speed and only take 1 cycle per each 10kkm, and also extend further to new planet, support rocket of 8 dupes and a few cargo of materials which u can choose to start another colony, with certain level of the technology and a certain amount of materials. You dont need to redo the early again. (May be someone had already mention similar idea in other post)

You're right, interaction in a 3x3 area with e.g. a line of sight check would add more possibilities for custom setups as opposed to a pure neighbour check. But it would also be more complicated to implement.

An alternative for an LOS check would be to have materials that have a suppressing (=negative) influence on nuclear decay and we just take the sum of all decay-values of tiles in a 3x3 grid. If that sum is above a certain threshold, decay happens, intensity/speed of the decay is then defined by that value.

(More Uranite in that area = more decay; core meltdowns can be even more violent when liquid Uranite manages to form a pool with full 3x3 grid sections in the middle)

I didnt realize that someone else had posted about this earlier this month, they found the reactor and the materials references in the game, so it looks like this is more of a reality than I thought, hopefully Klei wont make us wait too long for it to be added. :D

I am assuming because Lead was added to the game recently with no real purpose this would point to them added these items in.
