Texture Refresh?

  1. 1. Do you think Don't Starve/Together could use remakes of some of the old textures?

After looking at things like the Gorge and Hamlet, do you think some of the textures like the old trees, berry bushes, and gold boulders (as examples) could be updated? Maybe even some of the items like the default spear or even the terrain. Just curious

Edit:

I also wanted to clarify that I don't mean completely change the artstyle of some of the old items, I still want them to look mostly the same but with better quality. When I compared older textures to Hamlet and Gorge I wasn't talking about the artstyle, I meant the actual quality of the sprites.

I would like variant textures of some stuff like evergreens, berry bushes, and boulders in addition to the already existing ones instead of the existing ones being completely replaced then everything in the world doesn't look completely identical.

Also I think it would be better to just give a free spear skin instead of changing the default spear completely cause some people like the older textures, but would like new (free) ones too (like me).

The texture is the poit of this game, why would you change it???

Its like u have Minecraft and u change it to be GTV graphics.....

While I have no idea what GTV graphics are, if we're using minecraft as a comparison, I was thinking something along the lines of the old faithful texture pack

Everything looks the same, but sharper, more detailed.

We want the game's textures to be polished, just look at the krampus sack

the lines on the sack are very blurry

Yeah cuz maybe its not MEANT to be looked at from close up. Ofc if you enlarge a small texture by 10 its gonna look blurry

I will never understand why this is such an issue to some people. Isnt a game based around its gameplay and not its looks?

There's a zoom in/zoom out feature within the game tha allows you to see this naturally

You don't understand why people want some cleanup on textures that you're easily able to see ingame. Really. I find that hard to believe.

What I don't understand is why you're willing to settle for less

I'll be the first to admit I don't really care if they update the textures one way or another, but to just deny the existence of a problem and blame it on fans by saying they're the kinds of guys who like gvav minecraft texture packs is the weirdest defence for this I've seen.

The game will literally be the same, but with sharper images. Think of it like some of those remasters that get released from time to time, but with only a few items.

You can see that it's low resolution at the default zoom, and you have the option to zoom in via the mouse wheel you know.

So that means you play the game with Small Textures and Netbook Mode set to ON, right? Since you play the game for its gameplay, and not its looks? (Unless your PC needs small textures on to run the game).

You probably don't cause you like seeing a crisp text over one that's blurry.

I don't think anything should be changed. It fits the games art style.

Gorge and hamlet look different because their based on a Victorian theme, neither of them are technically apart of the base game.

I was less talking about how the art in Gorge looks in terms of style and more about the actual quality of the sprites.

I dunno, looks alright in my game.. -_-

How did you get the Krampus Sack & BQ crown to be high-rez? Through some settings or a mod?

Reason being is cause I made this thread here to request for better resolutions on items, with Krampus sacks and BQ Crowns being some of the things that are low-res in the game. (The request probably won't go through because of this comment here about the game being 32-bit with a 4gb memory limit).

Spoiler

Me zooming in as much as I can via the default zoom.

OH! I thought you meant full on re designs of the old textures. Yeah, I want high-res as much as everyone else.

Its okay, I should have been more clear. I just think the newer sprites are so detailed and much higher res, thought it would look nice if they did a refresh on some of the older stuff

So this thread is about texture resolution and not redoing the textures? Don't we already have a recent thread on that exact topic?

I guess sort of? But I also meant like, adding more detail to the sprites of trees, berry bushes and stuff. Bringing them up to the quality of the environmental stuff in Hamlet. Not just items

@lakhnish i made those, he tagged the wrong person. i'm working on high res items, it's a slow process tho, and i'm lazy haha

My savior! I will forever worship you.

Although I didn't specifically say plants, I kinda threw them together with structures in my mind when I said items, mobs and/or structures in said post.

Again, it seems to be because there's a 4GB memory limit for 32-bit programs, and making the game 64-bit is not an easily done task, as discussed in said thread here

High res sure, but I'd also be in favor of the Terraria treatment. Don't Starve's been around for a long time; I think it's about time for some polish on those older elements of the game. Mechanical cleanup, variant appearances of super common things in the game (like differing tree 'skins'), some filling in of missing elements in the long aged early-mid game, like cooking and combat changes...
Personally, I think that the ability to use similar items in crafting recipes (like boneshards being interchangable with teeth) is long overdue.

But yea, a texture refresh is on the list too.
