Tobruk
i.e. a group of high-level dupes, mid-level dupes and low-level dupes. Is it viable? From my perspective it just means that you've got to built 3x the amount of facilities (i.e. appropriate food for all three strata) instead of one big series of factories (let's say wheat and bristles for the sludge). What is your take on it? Do you feel devs encourage this playstyle? P.S Do not confuse stratified population (in my sense) with having a group of old dupes and a group of newbies who are gradually levelled up to the max. Yunru
Not by level, but I do stratify by work area to keep travel times down (with facilities on the meeting points of strata).
Gurgel
I just have everybody do everything. I do not take dupes that cannot dig or construct things. But I also limit to 12 dupes. With more I would probably specialize. I don't really see stratification (in your sense) as very useful, unless you have, say, 6 dupes that only do the hamster-wheel all day. Oh, that's interesting! I've done a similar thing (although not for practical reasons like your travel time) - I just picked a few spots as far away from the main base as possible and created mini-colonies with their own population and facilities. Was FUN.

How do you separate the dupes? Doors that one let one group though?

I'd guess having all necessary facilities in the individual levels/mini-bases and making sure table and bed assignments are set properly. But door permissions would work too. Denisetwin
I used to do this all the time - I used the tab - oh dang, can't think of the right name - the tab for consumables? Where you can choose what dupe can eat what food? So that my high level dupes ate only high level food and everyone else ate fried mushrooms. Since it's easier now with morale, and my current base has more water than I can ever use, I stopped doing that for the most part. Actually that made me think on my current base, I may set up a shower that only my three highest level dupes can access..... I think the Devs used to encourage this - because of the food tab where you can restrict what dupes can eat - but currently it's not really an issue. The divider between areas is the mess hall, dupes from above can use one door, dupes from below can use the other. Might switch to horizontal doors on ladders so that I can include bathrooms in the shared areas.

I’ve never been able to figure out how to do this. Mainly because the jobs don’t seem that localized. Construction, digging, and clean up tasks are all over the place. The only jobs that really stay in one place are operating machines and ranching. Ranching can be pretty full time if you have enough ranches, of course. Operation is things like the metal refinery, which I tend to run in bursts rather than continuously.
Stoned
I donˋt really strata, I like the challenge of giving them all a cozy place to live /eat/dance and barbecue with pepper bread for everybody. The astronauts do have a luxury place with lots and lots of love in the design, but that doesn’t change anything game mechanics wise, the decor of all downtime areas is above max. I like the idea though, when I am ready to blow up my current base I am planning to overpopulate the magma biom, lock them in, see how long until they break through and replay fritz Lang’s metropolis for me. jlarner
I tend to build a mini-base near the surface, with a Barracks, Washroom, Great Hall and Exosuit dock. This is primarily to cut down on travel times, and because I tend to work on one thing at a time (typically the starter biome, then oil biome, then surface). I don't setup any more food production though, just ship food up to the mini-base. And my dupes in the mini-base typically don't have morale values much higher than anyone else, so while I guess I could feed them special food, I don't usually. Even for jobs like that, it's still more efficient than having your builder run from one side of the base to the other because something something available tasks. JohnFrancis
I find that build and dig is well over 50% of all tasks. (unless your clean a lot) Most of my work force is designated build/dig with one additional specialization like science or art. The game when you break it down is a string of construction jobs one after another until you hit sustainability.
