Randomage
I have now reached a stable situation with my base, 7 duplicants with awesome stats, almost mastered all their jobs, 6 natural gas generators fueled by 3 geysers with like 20 reservoirs of buffer, plenty of water produced by steam/slush renewable sources. And I'm still not sure how to set up a successful plastic/steel/glass production, some of the easiest ways I've seen around recommend taking polluted water (which I can get from geysers et al), filtering through a sieve to get normalized water temperature, the problem is that I don't have need of water, and I will in fact have no idea what to do with it, and there's no easy way to recycle it into the system, perhaps a Carbon skimmer? Anyway, looking for ideas on where to go next. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/98083-moving-past-the-midgame/ Share on other sites

SkunkMaster
#1 don't make glass, you don't really need it for anything, and you'll get more then you know what to do with just farming asteroids. #2 make your plastic production entirely in the oil biome, which will allow you to circle oil and petrol through the metal refineries. <-- doin this allows you to manufacture steel without having to deal with the temperature it creates. #3 Your steel production should start with you excavating all the fossil you have in the oil biome. There is usually enough fossil to make 2 layers of roof over your asteroid, and then have a little left still. And once you've used all the fossil, you can always start crushing the egg shells from all the wild critters you have. once you're in space, you can farm steel of asteroids. The same asteroids(satellites) that yield you glass. But it looks like exploring the oil biome is your next step. Make a water lock, set up an exosuit dock, start digging out the biome. Then build refinaries and polymer press for plastic After you get enough plastic might I suggest transit tubes? psusi
I think the polymer press sucks... it produces way too much heat. Ranching glossy drakeos is the way the go! You can get rid of heat from the refinery by transferring it to oil on the way to be refined, but you need to be burning a lot of petrol. I liked to use the toilet loop before I needed to produce steel, which started to overwhelm it. Aqua tuner sitting in one tank of polluted water with a closed loop of polluted water circling around through radiant pipes in another tank of polluted water. The hot side goes through the sieve on the way to the toilets and that gets rid of the heat. The cold side acts as a heat buffer and transfer tank to other radiant pipes going through it with things that need cooled, like oxygen and water from the refinery. After I started producing steel, I had to switch the refinery over to petrol as the coolant and dump the heat into a steam turbine. I recently started making glass to build out solar collectors on the surface to operate the blast doors and that turned out to be surprisingly easy. I just had a little pit of insulated tiles and ran wolframite radiant gas pipes past it with cold hydrogen from the AETN, and dripped the hot glass into there and let it cool. The pipes were initially copper ore, but the molten glass falling on them melted them into refined copper Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/98083-moving-past-the-midgame/#findComment-1110662 Share on other sites

greggbert
I use this basic setup for my refinery. The coolant is regular water. There is a resivoir in front of the refinery that holds the cool water (<20c). The entire system hold enough water to refine 6 metals (a full queue). WHen the hot water comes out of the refinery it circulates into a simple loop through a single Aquatuner submerged in a pwater tank. Once it hits 20C or below it's redirected back tot he main tank. If my p-water level gets too high or too hot, the pumps turn on and send it to the Sieves. Even at full use the P water usually never gets hotter than 65c. Anyway you can refine anything with this including steel. It doesn't use too much power, it's simple, and easy to build. Top part of the ranch needs to be hydrogen filled. Bottom part needs to include a few mealwood plants. That is what i do - glossy dreckos to generate plastics. Ranching is so nice and efficient that i never convert oil to plastic. Just keep mealwood ok and you have plastic forever. Oil is only useful for power. I use petroleum to fuel rockets, jet suits, and as low temperature coolant until i got something better. I almost never use it for petroleum power - but i always keep 2 generator with 2 liquid storages full of petroleum to use in case of an emergency. (Automation switch keeps it always disabled. When enabled, smart battery ensure it uses is minimal). In late game, oil is converted to sourgas and then to natural gas to my natgas plants. Just need to keep the generators cool to get lots of power, cool polluted water. I prefer this way because it is a dupe free option. Petroleum cookers are nice, but with 300C limit for automation they are a PITA to create. At this stage, hydrogen powerplants are disabled, so i can use it to fuel rockets. What i'm trying to devise is a realible way to use hydrogen rocket heat convert oil into sour gas, to make is possible to use that waste heat. Jumpp
I always made plastic from oil, because glossy dreckos looked like a hassle. I finally tried them out this most recent game, and it's wonderful. They're not nearly as difficult as I imagined, and the early plastic is great.
