I feel cheated with Steam Turbines

Recommended Posts

I play since ranching upgrade and it took me sometime to understand game mechanics which many of players here are familiar with. Ten colonies later I managed to get to 1000 cycles with currently 7 duplicants. My main nitrogen cooled natural gas power plant produces enough power for all the colony and sustainable plastic manufacturing. I still can not cool water properly so I tried building a steam power plant.

None of the videos or articles on the web had any solutions so I started building next to volcano with magma. Few hundred cycles of experiments (I never used debug mode or sandbox mode) I got working prototype with semi automation and sustainable in a long run steam cooling. The amount of steam and heat was manageable so I settled up 3 steam turbines on top of each other. The prove of concept shows that it works perfectly except one thing.. the steam turbines leak steam to the top making them absolutely useless in the long run. Even if I will make all those fancy walfromite pressure doors to control the pressure the amount of loss is amazing.

I had 120kg of steam under first turbine 90kg under the second and 60kg under third. After second turbine activated and filled up the battery something happened and during the next 3-5 cycles the pressure equalized while the turbines were in standby. I did not know that at first and rised the pressure under the first one to 178kg of steam at 270°C and looked how my dreams of clean energy vanish. The steam under the second steam turbine rised accordingly and there was absolutely nothing written that a turbine is leaking pressure anywhere!

I can't provide screenshots right away since I am in a countryside right now but can do it by Monday if someone wants to see it.

Don't bother with steam turbines. I hope that Klei has plans for them, because at the moment they are unusable without zero energy airlock pumping (which could be considered an exploit).

They are only useful for cooling, since they delete a lot of heat.

Well, itseasy to make steam turbine work:

Just pump some gramms of hydrogen above it and do not restrict flow of steam up/down and steam turbine will work, s it will register hydrogen pressure as smaller one.

Tho it eats some steam, but that is solvable by adding a small sieve and dripping water from time to time.

Steam turbines are buggy and, IMO, worthless.

Same with petroleum power plants, minus being buggy. Why on earth would I want to burn petroleum when I can turn it into natural gas more easily and get dramatically more energy out of it? They might be usable if the refinery didn't lose 50% of your oil and require a dupe to constantly sit there.

Yeah. Oil refineries are a pain in the butt. They need a rework to be automatic and not require babysitting.

Not entirely true. I finally got a steam turbine to run - I guess my stubbornness to not use airlock pumping finally paid off.

This guy runs non-stop. And get this, it mostly runs on heat from the surface. Yes there's a volcano in the picture and it does supply heat, but only a portion. It wasn't until I piped heat from the surface did this setup finally pay off.

It is a bug that the steam turbine leaks in certain situations. I'm not sure what they are (if you know, please let everyone know), but I have seen this issue before, kind of put me off of steam turbines for a bit. I'm glad I didn't encounter that issue this time around.

I have good news, I reported this as a bug and there are two instances of where gas can slip through, one has been fixed and the devs contacted me to let me know that when the next Upgrade comes out this bug will be gone!

That is a great setup! I am glad I am not the only one experiencing this and that Devs are working on solving this. Thatnk You for answers. My idea with Steam turbine was quite simple and if it did not leak I probably would polish it so it will look and work better. so far it was a lil bit de-motivational.  Don't judge to harsh my Volcano VS Weezworts setup - they do actually cool the steam down to condensation point=)

Here is a Pic:

Also I don't want to do extra post for another bug so here is my germanized oil:
