I might have had a pacu explosion

Recommended Posts

Based on the chart in the Biology thread, Tropical Pacu are exactly like normal Pacu, but with an extra 15 Decor.  +25 instead of +10.  Not sure how that's useful, considering you need walls of some kind to contain the water they are living in, which greatly limits the area for Decor, but it's something.

I guess tropical pakus gives a the ability to turn your geyser water reservoir into a free food source? I can't really justify using algae for fish feeding though, as it's a limited resource, and by the time I've started ranching, I've burned through most all of the algae for oxygen.

actually, if you limit your colony to 6 dupes, you can survive off of 4-5 pacus laying eggs, along with some supplementary wild sleet wheat, and still have like 20 t of alage for oxygen and feeding by cycle 100.

I don't expand really fast, I take my time, nurturing a small amount of dupes at a time

actually, when breeding pacus, tropical pacus help with the decor of the stable, allowing you to manage stress better in your ranchers.

So you haven't enclosed your bathroom for the Latrine room effect?  You don't have Granite Paintings and Statues surrounding your Dupe's beds?  You haven't built a Mess Hall for the room effect?  How about Granite Paintings and Statues in the Mess Hall?

Unless you are promoting your Dupes to high tier jobs right from the get-go, when you don't have the food items to equate to their expectations, Stress is still a non-issue.  Room mechanics are too powerful.

I wonder how to kill them through automation.

How about: make a reservoir with a pacu in it ( 2 wide ), with 2 pressure sensors on the floor, if one of them gets pressed ( ie, an egg is laid ), a door at the bottom on the side opens, thus draining all the water, however, there's a 2nd door behind it, which is a pneumatic door, so it will allow water through, but not the pacu.. pacu ends up on dry land and dies.. Then a sweeper gets the meat out, while you pump the water back in, probably use a clock sensor as a 'reset'  button to close the door and begin pumping in water.
At this point, the automation should also ignore the pressure sensors, until they have turned off again ( ie, the egg has hatched ), at which point they return to waiting for the next pacu to lay an egg.

or.... maybe just wait for them to die of old age? You don't need to complicate things with automation, just get a sweeper near to where they die, and you are golden.

I don't know how old Pacu's get, but the idea here is that you want your meat as soon as possible, so as soon as your pacu has laid it's egg, it's time for it to get butchered, as you don't want to keep feeding it any longer than needed. As we're looking for meat, not eggs in this case.

pacus live 25 cycles, and you don't have to feed them to get meat. you move the eggs out of you main pond and into a secondary, "Sacrifice pond".  so letting them die of old age is fine, as long as you don't need to start meat production right away.

True I suppose.. so a sweeper over the pond with pacus in it, that picks up the eggs, and moves them to another pond, where they hatch and then die.. still having them die from starvation / old age just seems so.. boring.. I'd rather build a crazy device to do it.. Ohh just had a 'fun' idea...

you make a pond, with mesh tiles as the bottom, underneath the mesh tiles, you have a bunch of doors, once there's pacu's ready to be butchered in the pond, the doors open, dropping the water level in the pond down and leaving the pacu's on dry land to die.
Sweepers pick up the meat, and the doors close again, refilling the butchering tank.

( I totally stole this idea from the hatch butchery thread, where hatches get butchered by pushing water up into their hatching ground and drowning them, this just does the reverse ;) )

I think "boring" suits my method well. You could probably make it more interesting by making the "Sacrifice pool" a pool of magma, and role playing as a cult who sacrifices fish to the volcano gods.

If I were the one who was doing the snackrificing, I'd totally solely do it with the Pineapple Pacu, the Gulp Fish is too sad to kill.

Pineapple Pacu is just asking for it.

Edit: Whoops, grabbed the wrong photo, I meant!

They honestly look the same though :wilson_ecstatic:

how can your pacu get happy ? my pacu not eating from the feeder and still being wild for like 10 cycles now

this is not my pacu farm, this is just a pool that just so happens to be situated below  the box of 30+ pacu eggs I have for my chef.
