How to disable update?

Recommended Posts

There is only a week left in this version and I DO NOT want to update because I have nice game going and I don't want it to get broken by next update. Any way to get to play it indefinitely? Do I need to pirate this game that I bought? Need a crack to get non steam version? I don't want to lose this save.

Great more micro management when I want to play offline. KSP runs even without steam no stupid DRM and I can play any version I backed up. Why aren't companies doing that?

Why would a developer do work to make it easier for consumers to NOT get their content? Also, I'm sure they don't want to have a bunch of bug reports coming in from earlier versions, when they've been fixed in more recent versions.

I understand that you don't want an update to mess up your save, and that's fine because there is a way to disable the updates; however, the fact that this is an early access title means that regular updates (that potentially break older saves) is what you signed up for when you bought it. Under the old way of doing things, we wouldn't be able to play the game at all at this point, until it released.

There is a way to not get updates for a game that you bought:

  1. buy a game from EA (not in EA) on your next purchase
  2. buy a console game on an old console (pre-ps3-era)
  3. travel back into the year 1995 where developers were not yet familiar with the interweb to be able to ship updates for their product and break every patch-cd that reaches you via mail

honestly, you should be more than happy that klei is a developer who maintains their games. There are hundreds of examples where games were simply abandoned by their developers after release or released in an unfinished state that was never patched (e.g. gothic 3, hellgate: london, silverfall, sacred 2, the masterplan, guild 3, massive chalice, pretty much everything peter m. did after dungeon keeper 2, ... the list goes on (sidenote: sometimes the publisher was responsible for this)).

Now you might say "well, i do not care for the politics behind games. i just want to buy a game". In that case i'd have to answer: "sorry, but the joke is on you. you purchased an early access title. early access means by definition that you join a very early stage of development, that the game will still be unfinished and that you will experience alot of changes in terms of gameplay and content, many of which will require you to start over."

You might not like it - i have my difficulties abandoning my established base as well - but you bought into this.

And again. You should be happy that it is the case, because many of the recent early access in fact do not follow their roadmap and disapear with your money and leave you with an unfinished product (see: system shock).

Now let's put your frustration into something positive. It's an early access game afterall. Let's suggest a way to chose whether to convert your savegame to the latest version of the game or not.

It might be hard to implement - if not impossible to design (include bugfixes? include ai improvements? include new buildings?) - but if enough people are interested, klei might pick the idea up and make you a bit more happy.

I'm on my cell, so I can't check, but isn't there an option under game settings in the steam library for auto-updating or selecting the version you want to play? I remember having to choose this to play preview builds of other EA games. I will look around for it when I get home if noone can confirm.

there are options but currently the options are "Current and Preview" because, as mentioned above, klei got tired of bug reports because the "archive" build was being defaulted to, and the there is no "Don't ever update" option anymore without using workaround, as mentioned above, or the following.

by switching steam to offline mode and changing the folder title of the "edition" I want to play to ONIs standard

then launching the game from steam as normal

My current save is from Tubular upgrade and runs fine under OC, not sure what will happen next but yea constant change (for the better overall) is part of the development process. Provide feedback and discuss changes is your role, not try to stop them.

That is interesting because I was thinking about Stellaris when reading about this.  Because you can revert to whichever version you want through the game's Steam properties menu.

Sounds like ONI did have it,  but caused issues Kabrute described.

You can do that in Stellaris?  I didn't actually know that...  Because every time I went to play it, it took several hours before I could even start playing to learn the new early game strategy, which is a bit of a hassle if I want to play casually.

I understand why people think ONI should have this, but the issue is that then they leave people behind on previous updates and there will be fewer and fewer people playing the latest version.  The game is early access and the final release will have all of these things in it.

It would be good for them to find a way to let you play existing saves on the update they were designed for at the very least.  I'm doubtful about being able to create maps in old updates though.

Yea I agree with what you said.  This game is early access/in development,  and giving options for players eventually is fine(for final release).

But I'm sure the Devs have a vision for the game and they need feedback on where it is going and if it is the right direction.  And having more relevant, appropriate and timely feedback will hopefully help reach that end goal.

Just so you know, Steam is a database that never gets rid of old versions of games. Look up the "download_depot" command for the steam command console. That is how you backdate a game if it gets updated. Been using that since the Occupational Update while I wait for priorities to get better.

Don't understand the OP. Since the alpha, ONI has experienced different changes. Many of this were good and some different bad. But, till the release it maybe changed again. The cooking part of the game has changed many many times and also the plants and the requirements. It's normal! It's a EA game and u know it. I don't like all of the changes too, but the game is not finished. I find your mindset a bit immature.

Immature? Why the hell I payed for game that I can't enjoy the way I want? Who are you to tell me how to play ONI? This version is the most fun I've had in it since it came out! YOU are being childish and selfish. Can't a man enjoy his game?

This is gold! Thanks man!

I am not going to be drug farther down this hole then this. DustFireSky you are the one being immature. The OP asked for a way to keep their game version as is because they did not want their current game to get messed up by a game update. They never said they were not going to flow with the changes, just that they did not want to lose their current save. Your argument might have more merit if you directed it at me, because I have not updated off of Tubular, and will not until priorities are better due to bad interplay with jobs (This upgrade might fix it). But you have come here and attacked the OP unprovoked. It might be a good idea for you to take your own advice and "grow up" before throwing it at someone else.

Maybe i didn't read it correctly. Okay. Personally, i thought it's another: "Don't change the Early Access game, because i don't want changes thing." And I don't understand such things. If everybody starts a new game in the preview, they hadn't the problems. But, that is just my opinion.

Just DustFireSky being childish. I want to stay on older version due to my save and I wanna wait out stability and bugs that will be fixed week or 2 after release. I don't play untested version, I don't update my windows because it says update is available RIGHT NOW! Patience is the key. Let other eager testers hit brick wall with their heads and let me jump in after waves are settled.

Tested download_depot console command in steam, this is my new favorite past time now!
