When will the New Update Release

Recommended Posts

I'd expect big things "soon". There's been a big marketing push for DS and DST, so it seems like Klei is trying to get more funding for their projects, which is a great way to do it. "Don't want to buy into our unfinished games? Here's a critically acclaimed finished product that we still actively update."

In theory we are already using the experimental version.

I am always on the Beta branch in steam ONI options witch would be "thermal-upgrade-preview".

I'm not sure if that is the right choice as time goes by.

In my experience that branch would have been merged in to the main branch when the update went live. Any future hot fixes would then go straight on to the main branch. Any future big content updates that they allow us to beta will get their own branch.

Just hoping you don't accidentally miss some important hot fixes and stay up on the latest version.

Does anyone know what the absolute newest version number is as of now?

Patch details can be found here: http://forums.kleientertainment.com/game-updates/oni-alpha/

Main branch is newer than the "thermal-upgrade-preview" branch.

Always checking the patch/build releases, unfortunately it went from multi-new-build releases to just the thermal. When we had the pre-thermal update (before it went live and was only accessible from the beta menu) we had a lot of new builds during that.

I'm guessing they had Thermal fairly close, but not finished for the alpha release.  That's why we got Thermal fairly close on the heels of the initial release.  What we're seeing now will probably be more in tune with a regular development cycle - that is, longer spans between updates.

While we wait for a big update it would be lovely if they could sneak out some small tweaks in the meantime.

Coming home to see this would be a nice surprise.

* Fixed glitch with the highlighting of selected building materials.

* Added dupe health to vitals tab.

Although everyone probably has 'small' issues they want to see tweaked. Patience, must have patience :)

THIS!

yes, the vital tab need more tweak.. perhaps they can put the cloth/medicine management there too.

i just remember now, but if i'm not mistaken Klei also moving their office to a new place right?

so not just they have been busy preparing for next content, they also busy with moving to the new place.

perhaps we should wait a little longer before the next big patch ready to deploy for open testing.

i think they really need to fix the fact that half of the thermal heating and cooling mechanics just plain don't work because the temperature of gas and liquids resets on every motion. you can set up a 2x2 loop of cold hydrogen from one thermal regulator bring it down to -250 unplug it and let the 2x2 rotate indefinitely liquefying any gas that touches it and after its built never have to do anything else with it other than collect the liquid o2. these half implemented mechanics although not necessary for sustainability make exploiting polluted oxygen production trivially cheep and other than the warming it back up costs less energy than making o2 any other way.

its been over a month since that aspect alone has been a glaring issue. you know every thing heats up but the stuff you want and cooling needs over elaborate constructions to function at -60 or colder.(without exploiting glitches)

last stream I watched from klei glossed over issues but never gave us any scale of time to know if they are working on fixing problems or adding content. if they are just adding content  without fixing the issues like heat transfer and ai prioritization then I have no room to play for a while would feel like beating a dead horse.

adding new stuff to broken elements of the game only produces bigger broken problems.

My main concern at the moment is that Klei may have reached that dreaded point with ONI that many projects hit when the developers get slapped in the face with a big stick of practicality and come face to face with just what they've attempted to tackle and the resources required to design, implement and balance upkeep even just a fraction of the overall 'dream scope' they initially set out to achieve.

That things have got mysteriously quiet just a month into the Alpha release and now closing in to 5 weeks there hasn't been a single build update (Hotfixes are just that. Not actual new build releases) nor from what I've seen has there been any word from Klei to keep people in the loop of what's going on, it's a bit unsettling, to say the least given the previous nature of build updates to address bugs and other issues, and that Klei themselves roughly outlined a 4-6 week schedule between content build releases.

Now obviously things get delayed as far as new content additions are concerned. Things need to actually be ready and suitable to be thrown out into the wild even for an Alpha stage of development given the open nature of access... but that doesn't really touch on why there have been NO updates, not even bug fixes, in a timeframe that just 2 months ago was the stated period of time between more significant content releases.

If Klei has indeed realised they've got themselves into more than they bargained for and the effort involved is much more extensive than they had predicted so are in a period of redefining the scope of things and trying to figure out what they can actually realistically do for 1.0 and what needs to be shifted over to the "Post-release dream feature list" that's fine. Just keep people informed.... and whatever you do, don't do a 22Cans and turtle up behind soundproofed walls and figure people will be happy to just get something whenever without being kept engaged on what's going on.

It's so much easier and less time intensive to just keep people informed, then it is to damage control and rebuild relations from periods of acting like those that supported the project and are trying to be involved don't exist until there's a new major release ready to be publicised again.

All, there's a special test group that is testing some very new exciting things, so fear not (they mentioned this in the last stream).  This group is testing the cutting edge stuff (some not even with updated art yet) and it's very interesting stuff - before it's in a state to release via steam.

I also have access, and I can tell you this group is one smart bunch and they all think rings around humble me, so it's getting a very good testing.

Hang tight!

Then they've done a completely lousy job of communicating that.

@Tikigit, Klei doesn't have a community manager per say, though all the devs pop in and asnwer questions, and they tend to rely on their weekly twitch stream for those update goodies as well as a good Q/A session during the broadcast.  The twitch stream is also advertised here in the subs with a direct link.

Join in next time and see what's coming up next.
