Base burns down every summer

Recommended Posts

So what am I doing wrong? I've never lasted over a year in DST because every summer my base burns down and it just makes me want to give up and start over.

Yes, I know all about Ice Flingomatic. The last time my base burned down I had 4 of them built. Everything in my base was covered by them except for my fire pit and my endothermic fire pit. I tested it out early on. I intentionally tried to burn my base to the ground to make sure the flingos could handle it. I couldn't burn my base down no matter how hard I tried. The flingos were on point.

Summer rolls around, I have 1 chest full of boards, 90 boards in it, to keep the flingomatics fueled. I'm more than half way through summer there has been no sign of fire anywhere. I top off the fuel in all of my flingomatics and head over to my spider farm. the next day I head back to my base to find the entire thing has burnt to the ground. All that was left was my fire pit, endothermic fire pit, and 4 flingomatics still fueled.

How does this even happen?

Hate to be someone who assumes people are dumb, but did you turn on the switch?

Also, as it happens in singleplayer ds, if a fire lights near you and you ignore it and go far away, the fire spreads as far it can and flingos don't work. Happened to my fire farm.

I do not have a screenshot. I already restarted that world. But here's rough sketch of the layout. The only things not covered by flingomatics were the firepit (circle), endothermic fire pit (square), and lightning rod (not pictured, but directly above the fire pit)

Aw, that feels so bad. Must sound dumb, but as @Prakhar said, flingos have an off/on switch :|. If they are on and that kind of "bug" happened to you more than once it sounds crazy. Also, only things on your screen should go on fire during summer, which also gives you the option to have a summer base into the caves.

See here

When a flingo is "Off" It's put in "Emergency mode" Which from what I've seen isn't reliable at all and just means you'll come back to a base half burnt down with lots of annoying beeping flingos. If it wasn't that then the only thing I could of been was a glitch. Granted I've never seen anything like it... Maybe the flingos were offscreen and not loaded in but the fire was..? I have no idea.

This is really strange, I have also never experienced that. I hope this problem will be solved!

Are you alone on that server? It could have been a griefer, maybe... (although I can't imagine why would someone wait till sommer...)

I'm almost sure the flingomatics were on, but if not, every time you fuel them (even if only a twig), they will turn on. Except if he turned them off intentionally, which I highly doubt, as he said he knew know all about Ice Flingomatic.

An other possibility: do you use any mods? They can also cause trouble ,escpecially some mods together.

First day of summer, head for the nearest cave, with crockpot, chest, fridge and birdcage prebuilt (bring a bird too). Don't come back until day 71.

^ this is your safest bet. If you are in a private server all alone, or with trusty friends, just avoid the surface entirely during all summer. Your surface camp should be there unchanged, on early autumn.

The whole summer mechanic, having to cool down thermal stones, run to endothermic fires, getting farms withered, etc feels boring and annoying to me, so I just skip it. Living in the caves is much more fun, even if its one season a year.
Also, I usually make as many farms as I can in my cave base, wherever there is natural sunlight (from caveholes, not lightbulbs), and grow whatever crops you like there. Even if you leave the cave for the whole year, when you come back next summer your crops will still be there ready to use. With enough farms with, lets say dragonfruit, you don't even have to bother to get food during summer. (Wigfrid excluded of course)

What is even the point of having summer in the game if you're supposed to just hide underground the entire time?

In DST, the D-Fly was turned into a raid boss and not something that can spawn and destroy a base. The only plus that I think Summer has is the ability to get a decent amount of Red Gems from Fire Hounds, but other than that, you'll just spend your time sweating on the surface. Spend time in the caves and mine everything in sight. Get a lot of rocks for projects. Make Moggles. Get creative.

Autumn also has fire hounds. Or just Varg farming.

Still, Autumn doesn't feel like the season where some bored, unseen God uses their outrageously large magnifying glass to burn everything down to the ground.

It seems that the flingo wont work offscreen. Once i used a star caller's staff in a bunch of bee boxes then i came home and back,  all the flowers and some of the bee boxes were burnt. And sometimes your dragonfruit turn into grasses even if covered by a flingo. so weird that it still costs your fuel.

Well, sometimes plants do wither while in their range (same with farms) but other than that I have a huge base with 5 flingos that do not overlap. Every inch of space has something flamable on it and our Drying racks for instance are on the edge of the range which is a bit risky .Our world is now nearing 1.7k days and nothing in our base has ever burned down. I just recently figured out that there is no overheating in caves during summer so we've spent summers on the overworld up to this point.

Mechanics like overheating and disease seem designed to encourage players to keep roaming the map instead of just hunkering down at their base.

*Smoldering, not overheating.

And overheating actually has a few pretty neat solutions.

The part in bold is actually not that weird, because their fuel drains based on time/days they're active for, and I believe that when they're reloaded, they catch up to the lost time, like Spider Dens and co.

And a fantastic music!

I've spent my last few summers almost just chopping trees, because the Summer Jobs soundtrack is just so awesome. I usually leave all big chopping projects to summer so that I can listen to it.

At the beginnig of autumn I had 3 new chests full of logs... (and count to it the materials for the chests and the fuel of fires and 5 flingos... :D)

Oh man the summer soundtrack is hands down the best. It just feels so darn summery!

Speaking of music... Will we ever get the ruins soundtrack back? I missed that :c
