[POLL] Cooperation or Leeching

If people havent figured out by now, its a tendency for me to update this main post with informaiton, I rant, I don't specify when I rant, unless my title is a question, you can surely bet that inside will be just a rant, or a rant with a question labeled as a poll  Like I do say, if people want more "inside" knowledge about experiences, I will tell them, I don't add it if it will prove irrelevant to the point I am trying to get across ASAP. 

I've had someone PMing me about my PS Self-entitlement and calling me a hypocrite and entitled for playing on a public server and "claiming" the resources I have collected myself. Makes sense right?

Edit: It is a SOCIAL server. The gamemode for most servers is either Social or sometimes Cooperative. You are not expected to be cooperating with others on a social server, it is used to make friends. If you choose to then go on a cooperative server with them after being friends, which makes sense imo, then   <---- This is kind of irrelevant, but I have someone who will get upset about me "not putting in the details", but this is frowned upon unless the server is Madness.

This POLL is for your opinion, since people may have definitions different to the actual definitions.

 

 

QUESTION FOR POLL:

If YOU spend the time to collect resources, and you come back to your base, and out of the blue, 2 people are trying to destroy machines and move them or harvest the resources for them, and start building on that foundation you created, this is COMPLETELY without your knowledge, would YOU classify this as Cooperation, or people leeching to get a quicker start out on the public server?

 

I'm not going to vote on my own poll since that would be incredibly bias.

This is not a hate attack against the messenger, this is a post related to it, there was no name drop or hints whatsoever at who the player was, so I don't see any problem with this post. If there is one, please @me and I'll fix it asap.

I voted leeching, for the reason you mentioned yourself. I would like to host my own dedicated server, but, along with the simple lack of money for a server, I cannot stand it when that happens.

Lousy cooperation.  They should have discussed it with you, but bases do require renovation and modification sometimes, and unfortunately there aren't any great ways to communicate and visualize construction plans (without mods, anyway).  I just accept that if I build a base, people will inevitably move into it and modify it.

Well, I think their intention is to improve the base on the understanding that this game is base on cooperation, if that's the mode, which it usually is. I do think they should ask first for sure. It's so easy to do so.  Some servers do have abandoned bases on them, so it's not unreasonable to assume that it wasn't being used, but they should definitely ask.

Thats true. I appreciate when people ask, I always say "Maybe" or "I don't know" when someone asks to join my base, but I eventually say Yes after a day or so spending collecting food to stock up the icebox for them to move in with me.

 

I understand the whole point of it being a game of cooperation, I played the game since I liked Don't Starve and my brother played it, and I played alot with only my brother, so Public Servers were foreign to me.

 

There is a fine line between cooperation though, and thinking for yourself. I don't like to classify myself as an asshat, or selfish, but people will sometimes classify a "Maybe" as "No I hate you, if you come near my base you will be my next meal on my crock pot" and act as if I have physically traumatised them, rarely though.

I searched out for a server which a friend now runs occasionally which was fun, since we knew that most people on the server were really friendly and could be trusted, I am uneasy about when someone joins a server and the first thing they ask is "Do you have a base?" and its only like 4 days into Autumn, I understand Late Autumn Early Winter, but I feel like when people are already getting comfy with a base on day 6, I'd either blame lack of resources, leeching or overly friendly.

 

I was questioned about making a friend with a Widfrig and not 2 people who randomly showed up at my base, the main reason was because I left from annoyance of them altering my long-term base plans, so I left with just Glommer and some starting supplies to start a base, then it rained in 3 days and I was nowhere near materials for sanity regain, Glommer does nothing when you're drenched. They presumed I only wanted to befriend them for their helmets.. I mean, not like Football Helmets exist, and Wilson has a nice health pool. If I was Wes then it would be understandable I guess.

Only reason I befriended them is because they asked, and like I have put it earlier, I may say "idk" or "I'm not sure", but thats just me saying "Not right this second, I am just preparing for your arrival since you can stay here." I don't want to say that because that would look like I was saying yes and no at the same time and maybe confuse them.

I've totally had something like this happen to me. I built my own little private base by the Pig King with an alchemy machine, fire pit, crock pot, and ice box, and decided I was in a good enough place to go AFK for 5ish minuets. When I came back 2 or 3 random people were in my base building a thermometer and a rainometer for no reason and eating my meatballs, and telling me that if I didn't start helping I wasn't allowed to stay. Like, what?

There is no such thing as a private base at the Pig King.  Everybody needs the Pig King, so everybody will walk into your base sooner or later.  The same goes for a private base at the beefalo herd, and to a lesser extent, MacTusk and Dragonfly.  At least anyone seeking out the last two probably has some experience.

Every time I join public servers I assume everything is public property, and that's healthy assumption. There is no "ownership". Once you build camp. it can be used and modified by anyone and you cannot do anything about it so you may as well roll with it. Same goes for any loot or items in chests. That's why I carry all "neccessary" materials with me. Like, if I know winter is coming, I try to carry at least 4 silk and 10 stones with me, because people can either pick up everything from chest or use all for themselves and you are left with nothing. Same goes for gears, which are neccessary for survival in summer and some people are either dumb and pick them up for no reason and quit or eat them, and the worst is when they take them silently from your chest to build their camp with it.

I don't mind sharing resources, but some people do not know how to behave. You see 40 flints in chest? Take 10, leave rest for others. Some people don't respect others and just take everything.

Why would you become attached to public server camp anyway since it's going to last only for few hours usually, if you are lucky?

I didn't mean private like 'I wanna be left alone for eternity', I meant private more as 'I was alone when I started'. I was more than willing to let people join in and help, but it's rude to barge in and take my resources to build random and useless machines and to eat my things and threaten to kick me out of my own base. I feel a storm a comin', I'ma peace out now

Same. I don't mind gathering things for others, and I usually fill my inventory with stuff to drop off at the base with every trip away. I make hats and umbrellas and whatnot and set them out for people. But I'm gonna hold onto the first few seasonal supplies I farm, because with my luck they'd otherwise vanish right before the season starts.

 

...the base thing really depends on the situation. Not too long ago, there was a similar case to the Pig King story...player comes on, builds a fire pit and a science machine at PK, drops some items. Leaves for like half a season. Group decides that PK would be the best location for us, so we clean up the base, add fridges and crocks and farms and everything. Replace the vanilla fire pit with a nice Mini Monument. It's up and running nicely.
Guy that built the original tiny camp comes back. Instead of staying with us, he gets mad that other people joined the base he left alone at the Pig King which is a very common public base location, and sets that base on fire; along with 2 other bases across the world from it. That level of salt seems a bit excessive.
In that case? The Pig King is public. That's all there is to it, especially if you left within the first few days, and barely had anything built in the first place. People come in, build a bit, and abandon servers constantly. If the person is there, it's best to ask first, of course...but it's usually assumed that PK bases are group bases.

Others are questionable. Made a base by the Beefalo? That's a large area. If someone really wants to be there, and you really don't want them in your base for some reason, they have space to build nearby...it'd be best to group up and keep local resources in one place, but whatevs.
If you really want a private base, some effort should be made to build it out of the way.

...destroying bases never seems ok to me, unless it's something like destroying a Science Machine to replace it with an Alch. Robbing bases? Maybe, if the people are gone for a while, and you return items on request. Particularly if a player took something like Chester and then vacated the server.
That also depends a lot on the server type. Cooperative, everyone's meant to be working together, so moving things around seems more ok. Competitive, leave anything non-unique alone.

Should people ask if they want to join you? Absolutely. That's the basics of being polite. Buuuuuut...
If you join a Cooperative server, you should be ready to cooperate.
Separate bases are totally fine, but they should be working together to some extent, unless you're playing Competitive.
And servers intending to be Competitive really should stop using the Cooperative label. Looking at you NonSuburbia.

I might've complained about it a lot around here, but I don't really have any problem with Competitive play. It's just annoying that Competitive and Cooperative are mixed, when we have the tools to separate them. Cooperative has huge potential for raids and megabases and outposts and whatnot. Competitive is great for showing others what you can do solo. But people playing Competitive on a Cooperative server inevitably drain away resources that the actually cooperating players could be using in a group effort. That could actually be seen as a form of leeching, too. All about perspective.
I join Cooperative because I want a big group effort and a Dragonfly that can't even move when we attack it. I don't care much about what people can do solo. That's why different server types exist.

 

Though...for the most part, leech players really seem like another problem entirely. I know that single player didn't, but I really feel like DST needs a tutorial. There's a big difference between being in a solo game, making mistakes and losing your progress, and being in a multiplayer game, making mistakes and screwing up everyone's efforts.
Both grant experience, one is an obnoxious detriment to other players. Those 3 stacks of Monster Meat weren't meant for Lasagna ya nerd.
We need more vanilla grief prevention methods, as well...and maybe turn some things like haunting Crockpots off in Cooperative. I've seen several people ruin dishes because they didn't even know that it was possible.

Onto the question, I agree that it sounds like unwanted cooperation. The times this happens to me I just tend to roll with it. As long as they're actually contributing, then whatevs. I base alone because:

A) No one else had a base in time,
B) The current group sounded too disorganized to cooperate with, or
C) I didn't want to be rude and beg for base so I made my own.

I didn't build on top of the Pig King, I don't use the Pig King whatsoever. I don't mind people being near me, I don't like when people build on top of me without my knowledge.

I just dislike coming onto a server and being like "Hi I joined in the middle of winter so could someone babysit me until Autumn". I'm not trying to be cruel, but when its Winter and you just joined, you cannot do anything unless the person you got to take you in gives you things.

I see asking for a base on day 22 when you just joined

I don't see the point of asking for a base on day 6 (No-one asked)

 

I normally play Wilson on Public Servers or Webbers, for the sake of when someone does come and I don't want them leaving and thinking the server is bad, I'll always have my grown beard, a breezy vest and a winter hat with a thermal stone, so I can give them most of that and still be warm throughout most of the day out.

 

Even if it was a very bad attempt at cooperation, it normally helps to tell the person or at least inform said person nearby that you're cooperating. I give up building "nearby" landmarks like Pig King or Beefalos, I normally build in a Beefalo area but right in the corner of the biome to stop people thinking I am claiming beefalos, I just need poop for farms. Same with Pig King, I am not building a wall around him and smashing it down just so I can use him, I am building screens away from Glommer but close enough to run there before Day 11 Full Moon ends, since by like day 11 I'd have 4 crock pots, a few farms a massive tree farms, hopefully a bird cage and 4-6 drying racks, which for a day 11 base is quite nice and also quite bad for a deerclops target I guess. I don't hog Glommer as characters like Webber, since Webber doesn't need Glommer. He has Tophats.

 

Mainly because I spend my first like 2-3 days cutting down wood for like 3 stacks of logs and burning some logs for charcoal. I burn down segments and chop segments of the big pinecone forests, so it isn't as if I am burning down all the wood supply of the server, and you get more pinecones from the tree so its kind of hard to make your server have no trees.

Lol its the only thing that I could think that was threatening, related to DST and not vulgar. Glad you liked it lol.

Yeah I mean I don't mind it "happening" so to say, but there is cooperation when no one talks to each other, and there is actually really good progress going on  - No one knows what each other is doing but everyone has an unspoken role that helps them and also the team, but when I am trying to do something that benefits both me and my newly found strangers, Honey is a nice food to harvest throughout Autumn if you got the time too, also emergency small food and taffy.

 

MASSIVE difference between me feeling as if I'm entitled because I built the machines and spent the time out of my day to collect every piece of resource for the project.

Its like having a science project and your friend had to have his name included because he pressed the button that started up all the electronics and wizwazes that you created to make it function in the first place.

Also I like the Prisoners Dilema, I think its a really cool concept. I'm not a big fan of science videos. Like the logic from Prisoners Dilema though, just because I may cooperate with them once, it doesn't stop them from turning on me and stabbing me in the back, it happens alot. Some people play like that, you can't say that they don't. People will just join to fill up their hunger bar and get some equipment and leave making you think that you got a friend to help you out.

I much rather cooperate with no one and be faulted for my own mistakes, then cooperate with someone and get penalised for their mistakes.

 

I don't know how often you read my other threads, but if you have, I did say I brought DST together to play with my brother, since he owned it too, so I found Public Servers foreign and played them to "learn" the game. ANR alone is a bit boring.

I think we all understand that people "need" the Pig King, but when someone sees your base near the Pig King, it would be at least nice to ask before you start constructing mostly un-needed equipment. Why do you need a rainometer, once you build an umbrella you would probably always have it on you anyways, like flint sticks and grass.

It is called dont starve TOGETHER and you coming to PUBLIC server to play and it is weird that your base becomes PUBLIC? This is completely unlogical and you need to get used to this - your base on public server is everyones base. If you want PRIVATE base then play on PRIVATE server

From all your posts and threads you created (tons of them and imo useless) seems like you just want to play DST alone and have other people watch you how "well" you can play this game. Cooperate and get over your 10 day base omg - no one cares about it and you wont care about it either since after you finish playing it will be gone anyway. Some people will add to it some people will take but you can cooperate

If i find your base and see something usefull for me i will just take it without asking ALSO if i have anything extra on me i will leave it in your base (i always have extra stuff), if i have prebuild something that i dont need i will place it in your base for you to have it

One way to look at this is to view other players on public servers, even on a server set to Cooperative, as an in-game challenge that can also sometimes be helpful. I just got to summer in a solo DST run in beta in order to practice several things, and it's a bit quiet and dull. I complain about noobs a lot, but the fact that they are always getting killed and draining sanity or that they might come along a strip all your drying racks keeps me on my toes. Other players you're not currently cooperating with might also provide crucial help in a pinch: a telltale heart, help with a swarm of spiders, that one piece of flint.

Where you get into troubles is when you expect strangers on a server to be either neutral or helpful. They definitely make the game harder, even when they're good players, because they take resources that you might need for yourself. They CAN make the game easier by combining efforts. You might want to play solo for a while to get a hit of that degree of control. Then you can decide if you want to invite the wild card of other players into your game.

I havent used forums in over 6 years I am getting my bearings again, I am not use to multiquoting and my old forums didn't expect such, sorry.

Thats flawed.. You say its about COOPERATION then you say if you see something on my base you'd take it for yourself and leave something random that was "extra" on you. Cooperation is about reaching an end goal, that item that you took that was "possibly extra" for that player could of been essential to their next goal, but now its suddenly been exchanged for a stack of grass or something. I don't mind so much about the prebuild things if I can smash it down to either rebuild it in a better location that is symmetrical for my DST OCD or is not needed for my base and I can harvest the materials.

 

I don't build chests, Chests are for people who have too much excess materials, I always carry most of the required items for tools in a backpack, and if I needed anything whilst I'm out, or need to set up a base / outpost, I have the tools to make one, and sometimes people just steal from your chests when you're not there. It happens.

 

There is multiple game modes, social and cooperation are different. Living in a community can mean living near people as a community, for people to trade and meet up easier, or to live with each other. I said before, I don't stop people from building near me, but I dislike when they build on top of me. The server mode I play is Social, its a french server w/ caves.

DST Social Mode: This server is a place for friendly chatter, a relaxed playstyle, and getting to know players. Everyone is welcome here! I play social to get to know people, I like the server I play on because everyone doesn't expect anything from anyone. We have conversations about ANR and exchange items, compliment the gifts we get from gift boxes, even if they're terrible, like 2 commons in a row, heck, sometimes people even offer out free distinguished items for people who have had terrible common luck streaks.

DST Cooperative Mode: Surviving's more fun when you do it as a team. On this server we want to work together and do our best to tame the hostile world. See the difference? If I was meant to cooperate, I would play on a Cooperative Mode server, thats why the mods are there for a reason. Its like playing on a Madness server and expecting someone to be friendly, where "anything goes".

I know it will go after I play, thats the joy of Don't Starve Together, it will always be different the next day I play.

 

TL:DR 

Don't Starve Together has Server Modes for a reason, so you can play with others in a gamemode that suits you. If you're playing on a Cooperative Server and trying to lone wolf, expect to be hated, but its a social server. You're not expected to team up and conquer the caves or w/e, you're meant to have fun. Everyone has their own way of having fun.

 

EDIT: People may consider your playstyle as "theft". Taking and exchanging without the other players knowledge may just seem to them that you put their say, their gold nuggets from a chest into your backpack, and put some meat in the chest because that may of seemed the most irrelevant item on your person. How does this classify as cooperation? I would literally go insane coming back after leaving something like gold in my chest, since I never make regal tools, kind of a waste of gold, to see my gold vanished thinking I left it on me and then searching through chests (on the rare occasion I make chests) in hopes of misplacing it. Thats just me.

If this is directed to me, I don't play solo because its boring. I don't play Cooperative servers since some people take advantage of that and will just be that Wilson or that Webber who just sits expecting people to dance to their tune, whilst not contributing. Thats why I don't play Cooperative Servers, but Social. I don't find it very social when someone comes out of the blue and starts building on the foundation I created without my knowledge. If they attempted to communicate with anyone on the server after finding the base, it wouldn't of been a problem. I wasn't trying to get them in trouble but an admin had informed them that it was indeed a social server and people weren't forced into having to work together, (this is new info, I was on the server a few days ago and they joined again and found my base with an admin on who was talking to me about his cave experience the other day). I stayed with them during the first hound attack and parted ways because like he had said, its a social server, and everyone is aiming for a different end goal. 

I have a server with a friend where we all cooperate when a hound attack happens, and a massive public starter camp. All said people on that server are my friends. If I want to cooperate, I'll hit one of my friends up, I play social servers to find more friends, not people who joined on the wrong gamemode or have the wrong idea of the game mode. I don't try and be rude to them I will notify them to say that it is not a server expected for cooperation, if they don't understand that, I will move. I can't force them to stop building at my base, but at the same time, when you see the symbol at the left of the server name, and its not that improved farm picture for Cooperative, I don't think people should be expecting everyone to be trying to direct them to a big base.
