I am not sure whether it is or is not romantic, but just because the word is based on another word, does not mean that it should be taken literally. It could also mean that it resembles romantic relationships, while not actually being romantic in any way.

Not that it matters, whatever the case is.

You're right, I looked it up. It is non-sexual, but it is not necessarily non-romantic. (First place I saw the term used was between Percy and Jason in Heroes of Olympus though, so I usually think of it as just friendship.)

However, I have seen people use it as pretty much a synonym for yaoi, and that usually makes me wish the internet didn't exist.

Getting back onto topic, though...

Wickerbottom can make the Alchemy Engine immediately (provided you have the supplies), so that eliminates the need for a science machine.

This seems to be a major selling point on Wickerbottom for a lot of people, but in reality, isn't it only good for early game? I (not sure about others) generally have an alchemy machine, or at least the parts to make one and a science machine by no later than day 2 or 3. So assuming the science machine is immediately replaced by an alchemy machine, isn't one of Wickerbottom's perks only really saving you 1 gold, 4 logs, and 4 stones? Not trying to downtalk Wicker, I know her books are supposed to be great, but I just think it's peculiar that this is a strong point for a fair amount of people.

Yep. I could never understand that praise of Wickerbottoms early-recipes knowledge, it really only affects early game and overall doesn't even impact gameplay by noticable amount.

Building Science Machine and hammering it down just cannot be easier.

Wicker eliminates one tier of recipes. So build her a science machine and she will make alchemy lab items. I THINK it works the same for magic labs (so one cheap Prestihatitator rather than this and a shadow manipulator which requires nightmare fuel and several living logs plus killing a bishop for a purple gem).

The question is, does it really help that much? It sure does in PVP. But in default PVE worlds? I would say not really. Her strength lies in books (which Maxwell can read but not craft). Oh, higher stats are nifty too. She does miss out on a lot of potential sanity boosts from prototyping (in the caves, I often just plunk down a prebuilt lab and make ANYTHING). Sleeping and fresh food are not that much of a problem. Even in winter, you can hunt and get eggs. She is worth having for her books (and skins; can't forget skins - just see her survivor).

Wes is so cultured he should be able to do something a la Wicker's books. Maybe some other art?

Anyway, this was for Wicker. As for the original question, I would have to sleep on it. I think in useful TEAMS. The characters are different than in DS.

I (think) it gives her a slight adventage in pvp(although the books give her a much bigger one that doesnt become irrelevant after a day), as she can gear up sooner than the rest. Not a big change though.

So which character is most useful for group? In my opinion it's Wendy. True spiders killer, can obtain insane amounts of silk and monster mean in no time, receiving practically no damage. Silk is super important for many things and monster meat.. this doesn't even need explanation.

Webber would like to have a word with you. Take your pick as to whether it's about slaughtering his friends or who is truly the Lord of Spider Loot.

Does anyone else think it's funny, that out of 57 voters, not a single one choose Wolfgang? :p

Sort of sad rather than funny. Wicker still takes the cake with her books.

...

So I kind of made up my mind. WES. WES is BEST (because REASONS AKA balloons, the hottest skins and the general demeanour of being the boss). Did I help? I hope I did!

Everyone has their preference, ideas, opinions ect

But heres what i think honestly;

Wilson - Meat effigies, so yay! While touchstones are more or less, renewable in a way, beats having to find one

Wickerbottom - Early game spears and gear; though this dies since most people dash for the science machine anyway

Wolfgang - Fill 'em up, let him go nuts, as someone said on a server once "Wolfgang is like two people"

Woodie - I would say, even as a woodie main, Maxwell is better but he really isnt early game. He doesnt have the fuel to make enough shadow loggers to meet woodies standards. Plus going nuts on a forest is my personal pass time

Webber - Endless silk, glands and anything else you want that comes from a spider! Great for your crockpot recipes; just remove spider hair

In the end, in my opinion, its how useful you are as that character and how you use their advantages/disadvantages
Some players really, really know how to use them to their full extent

Other just pick characters not really used, and just make do. I just see it really as i said it, its how you use the ups and downs, and how you just play

just dont nom down all my birchnuts please :(

Yeah, I mean, I don't play Wolfgang much (the way he stops to announce wimpiness always startles the crap out of me, as he tends to do so in the middle of a desperate trying-to-outrun-the-dark fleeing emergency) but the few times I have played one, the other members used me as a human bludgeoning tool to help the team.  Like, one time, as soon I got there they started planning to take out the Dragonfly and handed me a brand-new hambat and a lot of food.  : P

...Notorious

Tier 1: Wickerbottom has the most flatout influence upon a team - if you're splitting resources between 20 people, having someone who can instantly regenerate every plant in the base in an instant is incomparable. Even without her other books, which are all tremendous boons, this makes her the hands-down favorite. Hucking backpacks and shovels at other players within seconds of the game starting is just an added bonus.

Tier 2: I think after her are Wendy and Webber for their ability to easily take on swarms of creatures. If Abigail wasn't such a naughty sibling with meh AI (I swear I can't take my sister through swamps) Wendy would easily outclass Webber, but alas she must content herself with only having an advantage over him in the early game.

These are the only really unique skills that any characters bring to the table - the other characters have strengths but they're really just doing what others can do, albeit slightly better. Nobody else can accomplish what the above 3 can without a vastly greater investment of time.

Tier 3: Wigfred makes taking down giants go a bit faster and easier. Her blacksmithing sets her above the remaining characters.

Tier 4: Everyone else who isn't Wes.

God Tier: Wes.

While Wickerbottom has the most impact overall, I place Wendy in second because she has the added benefit of being very low-maintenance: while the other 3 upper tier characters have issues with either sanity or diet, Wendy takes virtually no effort to keep sane and tends not to need healing (Wigfred can be great at this as well but only if she gets to consistently fight). On public servers where worlds tend not to last longer than a single play session, Wendy's ability to put in a lot of work for the team without weighing them down is really good. Wickerbottom and Webber require a fair bit of setup before realizing their potential, which makes them a bit less useful in short-lived worlds.

tl;dr: are you playing with strangers? Literally all of you should play as Wendy so I don't have to scrape your body off the pavement. Are you playing with friends or a closed group? Wickerbottom and Webber should be the first two picks in character select.
