is it worth it, capturing the varg?

Hi, some details

Team is 3 people. I go wolfgang leading the team both strategically and in fighting. I manage the resources,cook  and pretty much plan with my friends the tasks. Apparently as wolfgang i have the main fighting role with wolves or giants.

 

My gf is playing support with a custom. scouting for rare things and tending the rabbit traps, or chopping some wood.

 

My other friend is wigfrid, as secondary fighter, he fights frogs or spiders and helps with wolves.

 

So as servers get older and the team gets better we make larger infrastructures for easier and more food. Since we need tons of monster meat for pigs or for eggs/meat balls and plus the teeth are important, i am thinking of hunting for a varg for the constant flow of wolves.

 

I have done it once and put him in rock walls. Thing is, it was too expensive and also it was too much time consuming putting him it, or wasting one flute usage. The one time i did it i was lucky, finding him at day 20. In the other 5 servers with over 600 days in total i never did find him.

 

Also just in case i had to build many "prisons" all around the map because i dont want to move a varg across the map and risk gathering 10-12 wolves to my face before i close him inside. So i was thinking, was the imprisoning really beneficial? I remember he was slow and he was stopping hunting after a while. If i just put a varg in an empty biome but in the open, am i losing something?

 

The wolves will be killed by me and wigfrid, so we can 2 shot each wolf or if the wolves are special i can one shot them. Can we just run around geared and kite wolves with the same result? Honestly i dont have rocks to spare right now for the varg, since i make many farms.

The only reason to trap varg is for blue/red gems.

If you don't trap him, he'll follow you forever, spawning in endless amount of hounds. So yes, trapping him is important. Though, for more efficiency you could leave a gap in-between each wall placed (make sure the corners are blocked off though). And pan flute? You don't need to put it to sleep to teleport it inside a pen!

If you mean to use him as monster meat source, I thought you'd trap him somewhere near your base, but it seems you trapped him where you found him, and that seems far. So why not go to the Dragonfly's desert for hounds instead? You can also plant spider nests near your base, great meat/silk/glands source.

There is an other (and really better) way to capture a varg (and using this way, the answer to your initial question is : yes ^^).

You can create a teleportation portal (I don't remember the real name) and build walls around this portal (very close). Then, you just have to use the telelocator staff to teleport the varg to the place you have choosen. With that, you don't need lot of stones, because you need only one prison, and, better, you exactly choose his place.

 

If you are 2 fighters, then, you can go and kill hounds when you need some meat. An other way is, before teleporting the varg, to create a large tooth trap place near the teleportation place.

The last thing is to enjoy the infinite monster meat and gems ^^.

Vargs can't be farmed that well in DST with the lack of elephant cacti/houndius shootius, and even if they could, you mainly do it for gems and or teeth, not monster meat.

It's not laziness, its effieciency. Mainly since the Varg spawns them as long as its alive. Like ffs even upon death it has to shove in that last howl.

It's pretty efficient to just kill them yourself just as is with elephant cacti, or even more efficiently since the cacti will eventually die and you'll have to replant them. If you really are lazy, then here's how you could farm them (there is a way to get multiple houndius shootius in DST):

 Cacti won't eventually die though. There's actually a different farm which achieved even more than the houndius shootius model using cacti, and they don't die there. in fact it also has an on and off switch without forcefully putting the varg to sleep IIRC.

 

Eh, multiple ruins fixes the issue, but without console, etc. you're stuck with 1.

How would you do that then with the elephant cacti? Demonstrate?

Step 2 (any):

1. Get a Wickerbottom to surround the area around the warg with tentacles (not directly close to the walls)
2. Find a Tallbird rich area (try the one near McTusk trios) and wall the Warg there.
3. Make a Tooth Trap Carpet area near the Warg Pen and lure summoned hounds there
4. Beefalos...
5. Koalefants... (plural... if you happen to run out of Beefalos or something, just hunt for like 3 or so...)
6. IDK, try a Ewecus for kicks?
7. Pig/Bunny men houses near/around the pen... (and a flingo)

Step 3: Profit?

That... isn't efficient with the cacti. Just kill them yourself, goddamit! With a ham bat or sumthin! Even better if you're Wigfrid or Wolfgang. The cacti aren't legit, but the shotiuses ~are.

The main topic is about Wargs and then how to effectively farm the hounds... people stated as well as you about the many ways to not be direct (i.e. Houndius/Cacti)

Also, I would love some critique on the list I made regarding the cost efficient/practical ways to farm Hounds for their loot without having to fight them directly.

Yeah... I just happened to do a quick google search... my bad bby... still that'd be a mod if you want it in DST... so you could just download a more powerful mod to fight off mobs and stuff...

you can also trap them with trees  if you place the trees as close as possible this also goes for the Goose Goose once that is set just burn the trees once you got your vargg penned in

 

but i dont really see your problem with the team you have going like said you can just basically murder all the wolves with the fire power you have

@Asparagus you can get multiple shootiuses by a method I will not mention because then devs are gonna find out and then it's not gonna be possible anymore >_>

 

Oh, wait, crap, keeping exploits as secrets is against the rules, emm, emm...

You can get multiple shootiuses by typing in a command in console that makes guardian respawn every 50 days or so...?

On Tentacles worked, but is hard to put the tentacles and grab the loot since you lose a lot of sanity and can be stunlocked. It is recommended to build the cage in an isolated local on the map forcing the hounds to come from only one direction and use armor and at least a walking cane when you collect the loot. I used five books when i could use one if i did the cage elsewhere t.t

YES!  use trees and a telelocator focus/telelocator.  Trees planted as close as they can be will trap the vard, burnt or otherwise.  Also it easier to place the varg where you want it using the staff and focus.

Vargs can be farmed easily and efficiently in Together what are you talking about!?  and you do it for gems yes but also its a WAY better and faster source of meat.

Its an inefficient source of meat in my book. When you can get so many spiders so easily, why bother with hounds for monster meat? Especially if you have to kill them yourself.
