@AnonymousKoala Its VERY efficient.  Spiders are limited to how many dens you have what stage they are at after which you have a 50% chance of attaining said meat.  The Varg on the other hand can summon UNLIMITED amounts of hounds and every hound 100% gives monster meat.  Also on the matter of the 50% of monster meat I see a 1/3 chance and receive monster meat far less than that.  Now sure if you're after glands and silk too then yeah spiders great but if you're not then you cant beat the Varg.

eh, lack of multiple houndius shootius still makes this less ideal than singleplayer.

@AnonymousKoala Hardly.  If you can fight 3 spiders or more at a time you can kill 3 hounds at a time.  The longer the game goes the more you can do this easily in single player.  You get so many hounds teeth you can make a tooth trap field that no number of vargs can overwhelm.  Its MUCH easier and far more efficient.

 

Plus we're talking an advanced tactic regardless whether its spiders or vargs so dependence on Hounduis is minimal.  If you really want the easiest most efficient food gathering just get every berry bush and kill the gobblers its spawns,  Unlimited meat balls and jam.  In the end the game and food production is what you make it

A group of about 4 or 5 can live with just 2 spider dens... (I don't do farms and more than 6 berry bushes in my base because I lag ;-;) Non-hunting in the base should not be tolerated so everyone should at least go out during the day and gather/hunt for food... then we make the glorious bacon and eggs or fish sticks if someone was feeling fishy... (and sure, dragon pies)

 

After all is said and done, it's how much effort the group actually puts into the game... <.< if they don't know how to hunt, and make use of ingredients efficiently, take them along and teach them... remind them to always have weapons and armor in their inventories ready... not only do you get a sense of accomplishment, but you also helped someone out... (though I'm a hard-ass in game so I deter most players ;-;)

Look varg also has the teeth supply, which is AWESOME let alone gems. So the sub-products make it a lot better than spiders.

 

Also when i had the varg, my friend brought me (solo with wigfrid) 44 monster meat in one day.without dying or wasting tons of heal (and he is not so good at kyting) with spiders stunning you, we have to kill 7-8 level 3 killing dens losing many armors due to jumping green spiders and risking a queen. 

I know traps can be helpful, but they are expensive on a large scale. If we were to farm 40 spiders a day (and also, only half of it will be meat) we would need tons of grass. 

While to kill wolves, with 2 people is ultra fast, u just need 2 ham bats every say 5 days (so the bat is fresh) and some armor every now and then. You also get lot more meat, teeth useful for traps and gems for rez.

An Abigal and 3 tier 3 dens + a Wendy with a Hambat can basically do all that  (Works with hounds too)

Sure, monster meat efficiency, loads of gems, etc etc, but doesn't anybody else realize the most important function is to make fancy mob statue decorations for your base?!

Well, considering I'm Wickerbottom I can't sleep regardless. ;P They are just there for looks (and originally, for other players. The mob statues were the last thing I did in the world).
