The way my mate and I did it was by making a summer camp really far away so the heat and fires wouldn't register in our main camp unless we got too close.

that's a nice option, altought you would still need to storage your summer items, and other items, you still had to go to your camp, also like food, i dont have more gears for another icebox, get what i mean? xD How did you do it?

Basically what we did was grab a bunch of supplies and   r a n.

Spoiler

Nitre, grass, and thermal stones are going to be essential if you're making the journey DURING summer.

I prototyped an endothermic fire pit, a crockpot, a chest, and a drying rack before hand, and we picked out a place near rabbits and a wormhole. So if we ever needed wood, we'd move through the wormhole and chop down trees and then go back. That way, your resources are far enough away that they won't burn when you're not paying attention.

I'm not 100% sure this works, but placing structures as close to the endothermic as possible might help. If not, only having 3-5 structures shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as someone is always watching the camp. And with that heat, your instinct is to stay near the fire anyway.

For a while, we were really just living off meatballs and small jerky, using the morsels to make meatballs with cactus flesh, and then using the cactus flowers to heal ourselves.

It wasn't the most soundproof plan, heck it wasn't even a plan, we just ran with it.

The easiest thing if you can't round up the gears/whatever for flingos is definitely the caves. There's really only a couple things you need to know before you head down:

1. It's dark (duh), and you'll need a light source. Go down with a torch and grab a couple light bulbs, then come back up and make a lantern. Voila! Light. Pick about 20-30 bulbs (easy once you find a good spot) and just carry them around with you and you'll be good.

2. Food. There are food sources down in the caves but with no prior experience I suggest you bring some food down with you and not leave it up to chance. Make sure it's not meat, or you could run into a nasty surprise.

If for some reason the caves aren't an option then yeah, spending the summer in the desert is a good idea. Set down an endo fire and a regular fire pit next to each other, lighting the pit only to cook cactus flesh or whatever else you care to. You can make meatballs with them if you get some morsels, but the flesh is decent food on its own and restores 15 sanity a piece when you eat it. Only thing is, you're uh... not gonna have a lot to do. There's not a lot to be done if you don't want forests to burn down or whatever; you'll just be eating and standing around waiting on hounds for 15 days.

Oh, gods, I've been there.  Spring start, it's getting closer and closer to summer...where are my gears?  The mini-glaciers are going to melt far enough to where I can't even get 15 pieces before I'm able to preserve them with an icebox, _where are my gears_?  For pete's sake, it's summer tomorrow, I...

...guess I just won't be AT my base, then.  That was pretty much my strategy.  I set up a small camp-ette out in the birch forest for the summer, (endothermic firepit, crockpot, couple drying racks, and the fire, crafting and food supplies I already had in my inventory) figuring that unless I'm there, my main base can't burn down. Because that makes sense.  : P

Unfortunately, a good chunk of the way through summer (this is singleplayer, by the way) Dragonfly was like, 'SUP?  and buzzed practically right into my face, so I had to run away from my _backup_ base...to...my main one, 'cos I had no idea where else to go on short notice.  Fortunately, however, nothing caught fire for the last few days of summer. But, obviously I can't guarantee that'll work for everyone.

Amazingly, even though Dragonfly had practically appeared on top of me...the backup base was fine too!  I have no idea how that happened.

Some guy just joined my camp a few days before summer and made 6 farms outside of the camp on the left with no flingo in cover but like half of a screen from the edge of the camp where I had a small grass farm, twigs and berries bushes.

When i saw those farms I said to myself that they are going to be toasted the next upcoming summer, but to my BIG surprise they didn't even if spent some time in the same screen as the farms while collecting berries, grass and twigs.

Had a tent next to a endothermic firepit that usually keeps it cool and since it wasn't in cover of any flingos it burned when the fire was out for a longer period of time. ;)

Now, back on what you asked.. You have two options: caves or make a separate base away from main base where you will spend summer. Build stuff close to the endothermic firepit and keep the fire going if you sit in camp.

Psst. Don't use bulbs as fuel unless you need them instantly. It's best to gather Slurtle Slime which can be achieved by letting slurtles and snurtles eat minerals.

I just wish they brought back the challenge of Dragonfly. Nowadays, summer is just a boring season and merely a challenge to take on the heat, build a couple of flingos here and there, and sit around and eat the stockpiled food prior from Spring.

But hey, instead we have a stingy Dragonfly who sucker-punches anything coming near her. fantastic

Why? It takes longer to gather and the bulbs will grow back long before you need more.

I always found slime more comfortable.

Doesn't take that long considering it never spoils. Get 3 slime or more from an earthquake. cause another by lighting one slime. repeat.

After not that much time you have more potential fuel than bulbs which'll also last longer.

You overheat much slower in caves.

It's easily seen who plays more DS than DST, hehe :p It's not an insult ;)

You won't overheat at all in caves, only when standing for a longer while near fire. So you don't even need endothermic fire pit in your caves base!

Caves in DST have lot's of light. You can make mini base right next to staircase, the area is light (not during night ofc). But sanity drain is constant. That's all you need to worry about. And worms ;_:'

Yeah, the one time in DST where one of our team-members accidentally set off an instant-summer boobytrap, we ran for the caves.  And ALMOST made it, except that we had to go back to the surface to gather food.  (We didn't have ,much within reach of the entrance.)

We did have an endothermic firepit, but mainly so we could have light that wouldn't heat us up.  (shrug)

Maybe some time.

Main issue is lag, feeling unproductive/unhelpful(half the time I don't know what to do, if successful I usually end up being the guy who goes out to get something, comes back with a bunch of resources for the team. Thanks to me we haven't had any sanity issues at all really. So much cactus. ) and the friends thing.

(I also prefer groups but that's not a must)
