Pumpkin Lanterns

Last time I checked, when Pumpkin lanterns get destroyed from use, they also destroy the Fireflies used to make them.

Fireflies are finite.

This is what has discouraged me from using them. I would like to know if this is a bug or intentional.

I believe it's temporarily intentional but they might change it in the future. I've used pumpkins once or twice just for fun. Personally find them kind of useless. But at least fun to look at!

I wish they would stay on the ground after they runt out, rather than to disappear. And then you could just refill it with a new bug. As joy said, kinda useless the way they are now imo.

I use them as an emergency light source for when I'm out on a trip, there a lifesaver when the hounds catch you unaware.

I put the lantern down and then just destroy it. The awesome looking pumpkin is no more, but the fireflies stick around which helps to light up my base a little more to see where my chests are and what not.

You could just place down the fireflies on the ground. I just learnt that recently and currently my whole base lights up at night. Its really cool.

This. Just don't forget to use Control-click to separate your stack(s) of Fireflies into individuals. Otherwise the game will put all 5 (or whatever) of your Fireflies in the exact same spot. And no, a stack of 5 Fireflies is not brighter than just one. An odd quirk, but something you can avoid, at least.

More OT: Pumpkin Lanterns might have been a neat idea for a Fall/Haloween/Thankgiving update, but their implementation is poor and they really just a complete waste of resources at this point. It's too bad, really.

I've done this, but whenever I get close to them they just dissappear so I get quickly eaten by the Grue if I don't use a firepit instead.

It's a bit tricky, but it's possible to stand right on top of them without them disappearing. A seemingly surefire method I use (which usually works if you find them before nightfall) is to stand right on top of a known firefly location at dusk, and when night comes, they'll spawn like normal, and it's enough light to keep you alive.

I found that I can usually move around a bit without them disappearing, but if you're using those fireflies in an emergency situation (no supplies to make a fire), I'd advise that you stand perfectly still lest you become easy prey to the grue.

To survive the night with fireflies have two or three fireflies close together and run between them the whole night.

I have some fire pits in the same island and I have paths of fireflies so I can run to each one at night. I learnt that having a firefly right next to the fire pit is necessary to click on the fire pit to light it. My new goal is now to connect all my bases on the islands with firefly lanes.

Firefly lanes means fires from hell hounds are no problem for me because I can run from my main base to a fire pit with no flammable resources.
