This is a quick thread I'm making to hopefully get some clarifications regarding the seemingly exclusive skins tied to the Don't Starve board game that's being marketed.

You can find the Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/glasscannonunplugged/dont-starve-the-board-game

I've recently been finding and seeing talks about some figures and skins being tied to the Board game and its launch, although when I go to look at it myself, I, among some friends, find some of the wording a bit confusing.
For example, the intro page mentions following for a free gift, which seems to be the Pick/Axe skin. Although when asked about it, contributors later clarified that you'd be getting the skin if you followed and backed the project. Which is a tad bit misleading at a first glance.

image.png.09f51a74e753cd75601d882366e6b6bc.png

And then, this brings me to the real reason I made this thread. It looks like we're getting our first ever Merch exclusive Full Character set in the form of Wolfgang's Mighty Muscleman skin. This is a first for merch skins, as they've only been tied to smaller item/structure skins in the past, we've never had a full character set be obtained outside of the main game before, and I'm worried about its potential exclusivity...
image.png.afd2f44a69b4874ae08e2fb7e87342dc.png

The page goes on to say that the skin is included for free in the early bird special, for those who buy the game within 72 hours of it dropping.

image.png.cf4f411a75eaa79945617266c43e781f.png

Although, whilst I feel it might be implied, I can't find anything noting the availability of the skin outside of this special. Is this something we're going to be able to weave, or purchase through the steam market place? Or another method? The final entry says it's a campaign exclusive, and if it truly is with no intention of it being obtainable outside of the board game, I hope this can be reconsidered, or that future skins don't go this way. Especially something as notable as a full character set.
image.png.6afda855c004ad79fce794af384bdaeb.png

If there's anything I've missed or overlooked, please let me know.
TLDR: I'm wanting to know if the skins that come with the Board Game dropping are going to be obtainable in the main game to any degree.

this is super misleading and confusing. you get a free gift and a backer gift but you cant have either gift unless you ALSO buy the full boardgame. that isn't a free gift or a backer gift that is just box variant content. also i don't believe klei cleared this. can someone confirm this isn't a scam?

Exclusivity is a good thing. Im still mad klei released bottomless pit, a beta DST player exclusive, to the masses.

If the skins can be accessed outside of these special circumstances then whats the point of buying the boardgame? The whole point of these skins is to make you buy the boardgame?!

Why buy the boardgame? I think it should be fairly obvious why you’d buy the boardgame.

I assume that most people who want the board game want it so they can play the board game, not so they can throw it into the nearest fire in favor of digital licenses that let them make a character purple. The skin is a bonus, or something to sway people who were on the fence, not the entire reason you're supposed to want to buy the game.

No I need fuel for the coming winter I care not for the board game or the skins I need to keep my family warm and this is the only way

It's not a scam at all, Klei is cooperating with Glass Cannon on the board game, and there are supposed to be more skins coming apart from these two.

One thing to note is that the codes for these skins will be in the game box, so you won't be able to use these skins for quite a long time. Based on my Kickstarter experience, I wouldn't expect fulfillment until next Autumn.

that's fair, i backed the cotl comics near the end of the campaign  and it took half a year before they were sent out

I'm glad they’ve done that. I’ve been playing Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together since they came out on console, but because there was no console beta, a lot of players missed out on getting that skin. It should have been handled differently from the beginning.

They shouldn't have done that period, and I hope they don't do it with this wolfgang one as well. I'm not gonna buy the board game because of shipping issues, but if it was a skin for Willow or Wendy then I would definitely spend as much as they wanted to offer for it, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Also all of these bunch of people instead of trying to help their devs with an exclusive are now cheaping and calling them scammers for putting a digital good bonus for supporting their board game. What kind of monsters are you people? It's not like this costs 100$ or something.

There are many people who value having character skins, especially skins for their mains. There are also many people who are interested in playing a board game adaptation of Don't Starve. Both groups deserve to pay a fair price for what they want. The group that just wants a new character skin set should not have to pay for a board game, nor should they have to show up within the first three days of the campaign going live, especially since many players will not even have the chance to hear about it before the window ends. Surely the board game does not need that much non-board-game incentive to attract support, and if Glass Cannon Unplugged/Klei feels that it does, that does nothing to reassure me about the quality of the game itself.

I'm very new to Kick Starter thing and very confused about this as well. This is what I understand. Please, and please correct me if I'm wrong.
(1.) They release more stuff for their boardgame (for free) if more people follow it on Kickstarter website. (You don't get it for free; you get more stuff when you buy the boardgame.)
(2.) To get those exclusive skins (Pick/Axe and Wolfgang as of now), you have to back the campaign (donate money) within 75 hours when it's launched and then buy the boardgame.
Am I right about (2.)? I want the skins and the boardgame, so I wanna make sure I get this right.

I don't see any rewards tied to follower count. Often Kickstarter campaigns offer "daily unlocks" with free or paid additional content, or "stretch goals", meaning the additional content is unlocked once a certain funding milestone is reached.

The Pick/Axe skin is part of the "Constant Curiosities" expansion, which includes content for the board game and tied to following the campaign before it launches and backing the project with the same account. Going by the wording ("GCU limited", "$10"), I assume the expansion (including the skin) will be available to those who don't follow before launch, at a cost, and will be exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign.

The Wolfgang set (including the skin) is a paid expansion to the base board game available during the Kickstarter campaign. It's an "early bird" reward, meaning in this case that people who back the project early on receive it for free with the base game.

Exclusivity isn’t a virtue, it’s just artificial scarcity. You didn’t “earn” the skin, you just happened to be in the right place at the right time when Klei dangled it in front of a tiny pool of players. Acting like others don’t deserve access to it makes you sound entitled, not supportive.

And let’s be real: calling people “monsters” because they don’t want to pay for a board game tied to a digital cosmetic is ridiculous. The only ones cheapening Klei’s work are fans who think “true support” means keeping content locked away so they can feel special. If you really cared about the devs, you’d want more people enjoying their work, not fewer.

i wish we could see some sort of like...demo on how its played because i cant even imagine how dontstarve can even work as a board game

on the skin...there might be a change of it being like a differend rarity kind of thing were it is "loyal" rank or something if you buy the board game

No? I can't enjoy something just because of poor timing? Sure I get it if it is like a live showing where people have to be physically present, but plenty of companies do Made When Order (or whatever it is technically called). False scarcity is unethical. That's just for physical products, digital goods legitimately have no reason to be exclusive given they can be created whenever.

If a reason to enjoy something is because little to no other people have access to it, that is selfish behavior. The thing itself is what is enjoyable, not the scarcity.

You buy board game to play board game, no? Skins are just bonus. Just like little anecdote blocks in some crossword journals (I doubt ppl buy them just to read some jokes).

It's indeed very misleading phrasing. "Free gift" and "Free gift for people who back the project" and "Gift for people who buy the final product" are three different things. I thought it's the second thing, but now it does seem like it's the third thing?

From my understanding, in order to get both skins you need to 1) follow the kickstarter before it releases and 2) back it a certain amount within 72 hours of release (with the account you followed it on).

Kickstarters usually have different tiers with different rewards. Donating past a certain threshold should include the core box and I believe is what they mean by buying the game.

Well, this is honestly very telling of Klei that they're either locking in on making as much money as possible, disregarding their reputation in the process, or that they have not learned their lesson at all. So first, they discontinue Mandrake and Crabbit plushies and release their associated digital items for a chump change as "resurrected skins" compared to the originals (don't at me saying it's still "expensive", I'm over that discussion from other threads), upsetting many original buyers, making it clear huge expenses will no longer be a requirement to own the most prestigious skins in the game, now they're doubling down on releasing more super expensive exclusive Proof of Purchase skins, they have released/announced at least 10 new such skins (if we include the WIP Sisturn skin and the blind box figures in China) in just this year, plus we're now also getting exclusive character skins as well apparently. Make it make sense Klei, please. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Klei starts releasing DLC characters tied to official merch costing like $100 to promote sales. It's very disappointing to see this company taking this direction, and still leaning onto predatory strategies like FOMO and being deliberately vague on how long items have to be discontinued for for them to qualify for resurrection. Also this merch-skin exclusivity thing continues to hurt true merch enjoyers as skin collectors will continue to compete with them for supply, both sides are at loss here

I would appreciate an official response on whether digital items from this Kickstarter will be available in the future.

I don't think they will, would ruin the FOMO sales of the thing.

Man, limited digital items are sooo dumb, specially when it's tied to merch. Shipping be the final boss...

They did introduce a whole system to allow people to buy skins without physical merch, once it becomes unavailable/unreasonably priced. It hasn't been utilized well/all that much so far, but I want to hold out hope- Klei did a lot of things right, maybe they'll handle this as well.

But again, they are just a company in the end.
