TLDR: Early-Midgame Yes, Lategame Not at All

Wildfires have thankfully gotten a lot more counterable these days, and I think the options you have are great for earlygame and a majority of midgame, which pretty much suits the needs of 99.9% of players.

Really, the only issue with wildfires is they get worse/harder to deal with the bigger your base is. It isn’t inherently hard to deal with a small-medium base, but bases that start getting to be biomes wide become a lot more cumbersome to handle the mechanic. I don’t inherently think it’s an issue with wildfires, just a side effect of making a base as big as that.

I myself disabled them since I didn’t personally like the ways to counter them when you are that far into a world, though that was also thousands of days in. Most players are probably not going to need to worry about that, so I don’t personally think its too serious.

Really, the one thing I would want is a universal character item that can call/halt rain, as Wicker/Max are the only ones that can do that and J feel it’s very unfortunate a potential solution for widescale bases is locked behind playing those characters in summer. I can’t say I would want much else, though.

I like playing with wildfires but I put them on low so that it isn't too annoying at base. Seeing things randomly go up in flames is kinda funny.

In a very long-term world they might get turned off if it becomes too inconvenient to deal with. At least giant trees allow some parts (or your whole base if you're willing to base on docks) to be protected from wildfires before rifts.

I spend most of my summers running around the world, so I don't bother if something burns.

But one thing that I made at my base is to place one lureplant and just let it burn, if i'm near, I put the fire out, otherwise I just replace it. (of course that my base has lureplant-proof floor and I'm not letting any flammables near the lureplant).

Under normal conditions usually yes (Although, like disease I think wildfires need a rework, or seasons in general but off topic). For my day 1 world that still has old farms and items or my "Mega base" world, no. Just in case. Even though with wildfires off I still place flings, just in case.

they can't

I believe they technically can't, but if something on edge of the screen starts smoldering while you are moving the other way, than it is easy to miss. I stopped making lureplant farms near my base because they kept smoldering without me noticing.

weird, i have had smoulders happen just barely off-screen like twice this last year

their range is up to 6.5 tiles away from the player, they can happen out of view from certain angles like under the player but they don't happen "a screen away"

I play with wildfires now, but I definitely used to turn them off. If your character doesn't have a way to mitigate them such as wickerbottom or maxwell, willow, etc. then they can be really frustrating. Especially as someone who dislikes rollbacks they can feel kind of unfair sometimes, so more power to you if you turn them off.

I always play with wildfires because it is a fundamental part of the game.
And also, it is very fun in my opinion. If you forgot to put a flingomatic, or put it in poorly, then you will be punished for your mistakes.
DS is a game that does not forgive such mistakes, and that is its charm.

To be honest, I do not want to turn off fires because I do not want to make an already easy game easier.
I mean "easy" only because I learned to cope with all the "threats". But the more of them there are, the harder it is to keep everything in mind.

It is difficult to even imagine how much I have burned during the entire time I played DST...))
