Keknutui
Recently, after we've had skill trees and rifts in the game for like a year, I was wondering if the players were happy with this decision, and if yes/no, why? I am personally pleased with their addition and the fact that it has made most of the characters really playable (Hello Willow and Winona). They gave players the opportunity to choose skills to build a character for themselves. But I think that no matter how interesting they are, they occupy part of the content in the game, although I understand why they were made. Hopefully, skill trees will be the last major character update that we'll see. It's getting harder about the faults. They are still being created now and so far I like them. But I think there are problems in them that can be fixed. The moon hail is too weak now, I would like to return the damage to it and have some mobs respawn from it with the help of the moon. The idea is not mine, but I find it very interesting. Deadly Brightshade, I know that many people do not like them and that not everyone is ready to plant Dragon Fruit near lava lakes or make special places from them, but I would not say that they are so annoying, for me they are a tool capable of farming mobs and some bosses well. And the last one is complexity, I can't say much about it, since with each update things get more complicated, but after the recent axe with vampirism, I would like very difficult final bosses that were distinguished by their complexity, which you need to dodge and fight very competently. That's all guys, write what you think about the promotion of Klei, I will be glad to read Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/159393-do-you-like-rifts-and-skill-trees/ Share on other sites
Mike23Ua
I mean.. sort of? It all depends on how they’re handled. Wild Rifts are sort of an iffy subject for me because the more content Klei adds to them, the more of the game that ends up locked behind super late game progress. But that’s the whole problem, a lot of the challenges that rifts bring into the game feel super early game, and prior to opening the rifts… your tasked with doing a bunch of WAYYY More Difficult stuff first. Take the new content update as an excellent example, Mimics.. instead of being a new early game shadow creature like they SHOULD have been, are locked behind rifts, meanwhile… the 5000hp Giant Worm/Boss is early game content and not locked behind rifts…??????? If you want my honest opinion about that, I think that Klei has a SERIOUS difficulty balancing problem. And a lot of stuff that is late game shouldn’t probably be so late game, while a lot of stuff that’s easily accessible early game (like some random player on the server socketing nightmare fuel into the terrarium to spawn two base destroying Twin eyes on a random poor newbie) probably shouldn’t be so early game? As far as skill trees go, Wilson’s sucks, Wigfrids added content she should’ve got during her rework, Willows was probably the best (but also most drastic change) Wormwood got too many tweaks to his.. and so on and so on. I mean I don’t want to leave this as a TL:DR complaint so I’ll just leave it at that. Echsrick
skill trees are i think a fine thing, kind of interesting, if not allways balanced rifts i dont like how they feel so unfinished with like not having an end to it and like over all it just feeling like contend bloat, just like the stupid planar defense thing, planar weapons only exist to deal with the things it self because they needed to nerf every thing else for some arbitary reasons with the planar defense Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/159393-do-you-like-rifts-and-skill-trees/#findComment-1744511 Share on other sites
GimplyGoose
Regardless of the mechanics of the rifts, I like them because I think they are cool. Some outside force is changing the Constant. They aren't finished, so I'm not going to make a wholesale judgment about the mechanics of them yet, but I like the concept. -Variant
Huge on Rift content, wish its execution was done better and it was more focused on the world getting progressively harder than something you optionally opt into though. Still don't like Skill Trees at all, personally. Started out concerning and a LOT of the recent ones have had abnormally strange design decisions cropping up in them that makes me wish characters themselves just got cleaned up instead. NPCMaxwell
I have been away from DST too long to really give an answer that's why I vote EVERY option on the skilltrees (main option is NO though, but mostly because of Wilson (or rather TORCH) skilltree vs the other skilltrees) for rifts, I have only enabled them via the options so far and they seem quite fun to me so yes, but also hard to answer and other, because I would probably never reach them in-game for the way I play DST. Harrowick
I like skill trees, the player choice in builds is always fascinating to me! Plus they can shake up how you play a certain character, they're nice! The rifts though, (to me) don't really seem worth doing at the moment, at least not now. They're a little unfair to the characters who don't have their skill trees/alignments yet. The idea behind them is cool, but I find it really strange to have all these updates around alignment when not everyone can choose one yet. I dunno! xhyom
I like talent trees because they have greatly improved characters that didn't have anything very interesting or useful in them, but I don't really understand the point of having a skilltree, to tell the truth. The characters that really benefited from the skilltrees, Willow and Woodie, for me, don't have many choices. The best option is kind of obvious and it's not like there's much left over since almost 80% of the tree is easily filled. So for me, an objective rework that had a clear vision of how the character should be would be easier and wouldn't bring this obligation of having to make a tree for everyone, which creates cases like Wolfgang's tree that has nothing interesting and was made just for the sake of it... As for the rifts, I don't know where Klei is going with it. It seems like we're being tricked, to be honest. We've been doing this for over a year and it still has no purpose or logic. We're not going anywhere. The new content isn't even interesting enough and we receive it little by little in a way that is almost exhausting. It seems like these updates are pretty much filler even though they are the main story basically Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/159393-do-you-like-rifts-and-skill-trees/#findComment-1744523 Share on other sites
ADM
Skilltrees : Huge yes for a variety of reasons (enhances and create certain playstyle, can solves personal issues, as a modder this is a good playground), the only problem I have with them nowadays is the Insight system. Sure I have everything unlocked... but I have everything unlocked from the beginning, even the shadow / lunar affinities. I would prefer if in each world we started at 0 insight and we gain it progressively, and the insight is shared across ALL characters. Rifts : I would have answered yes some time ago, but when I see what they're doing in the current beta I only realize now that a single change or addition can screw the rest over. Do you like to fight a fun enemy within the shadow rifts ? Here's a new one which is insanely boring and everywhere now ! You like this group of enemies that pop around the cave fissures ? Well now you'll have to guess a long, variable among of time to wait for before encountering them because there's new ones instead... and it's not like they were an equivalent or anything, just straight up Minecraft silverfish as rift content. Oh well ! So yeah rift can be fun on the paper but if they're taking more time at Klei to release the update I would have at least figured they're more cautious about the stuff getting added. I'm waiting to see what happens, still. Milordo
No, both destroy the design principles of what Don't Starve is and are horrible, simple as that. I don't want to continue further because I'm lazy and don't want to focus all my energy on writing a long poem in a post that could be abandoned in 1 week. I will respond at max with short answers like this --> 55 minutes ago, Keknutui said: I am personally pleased with their addition and the fact that it has made most of the characters really playable (Hello Willow and Winona). They gave players the opportunity to choose skills to build a character for themselves. 1) Updates exist in videogames. They are a revolutionary tecnology that lets you update constantly your game, in this case characters. Wonderful isn't it? Without the need to create a convoluted mechanic that stomps and destroys everything you have built before. 2) Did you know, you could already have builds on your characters in Don't Starve with the magic of "take your mouse, select the items you wanna equip and use them" without a somewhat forced mechanic that you need to press a button? 3) Winona playable? I think we live in different worlds, because if you meant "Winona have more things to play, thanks to her skilltree" ok then, but her skilltree has made her slightly more unplayable then before. The only Winona main in the world made an angry video about it for 45-50 minutes. And what about Willow? Unplayable? Or maybe underpowered? Or maybe abandoned? Hmnnnn....We're talking about the same skill tree that broke the hearts of the few Willow mains and others by missing completely the point of the character, right? A very great Willow fan is already with us, in this exact same post. They're probably filled with immense joy in their heart, how their little Willow linked the first flame and became "Willow, The Great pyromancer of the Purple Swamp" Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/159393-do-you-like-rifts-and-skill-trees/#findComment-1744526 Share on other sites

Maxil20
I always like more reasons to play different characters, so character trees are an easy one. Rifts are a bit more tricky, but I’ve personally liked messing with them. Even if there isn’t much clear direction to what exactly they will aim to yet, the new gear you get out of them is immensely helpful for practically any playstyle. Just will have to see what it amounts to at the end of the day, but it certainly comes out on top in terms of QOL items you snag. Yeah, sure. But how much will last? Will the people trying for their first time those characters, stick to them, since their core base design still lingers and as such their flaws and errors too? And if already skill trees are becoming too wobbly and Klei being Klei make the last skill trees so magically appealing with forces behind our comprehension, will these skill trees really did the difference? Or the community will brag about it and Klei being Klei launch the nuke weapon and implement "Now on Don't Starve you can level up your character! Do stuff to earn xp and re-collocate them to the new stats: Strenght, Agility, Hunger, Health, Sanity and Science!" RozeMeteor
Can't say anything about rifts yet but for skill trees don't starve is the first game containing them in all my life that i really desliked the execution, they look boring and most of them miss the point of the character completly or just outright break most of the game, winona became the lazywoman, willow turned into annie, wolfgang had dumbells which where super interesting but that's it, wilson was suposed to be a starter character yet he performs way better with endgame resources, Wigfrid could be so much better as well, beefalo tree and more useless songs.. not to mention the shields to further increase wigfrid skill celling, people say nice things about woodie but i never played him much, his skill tree have some good things for early game and his weremoose can stomp most bosses with little preparation, wormwood was the one who looked most interesting to me, but i never played him as well so i can't say much about this one too. Just to wrap things i really hope Klei dedicate a future update to fix some of the skilltrees, it's understable that they were learning with the first ones but the power creep of Willow was too much compared to others and now Winona was on the same route,i wonder what they plan to do with the game itself in the future.
