My girlfriend and I were going through the short and some past ones, and I don't know if this was confirmed or not in the past, but does this seem pretty similar? Only difference is a minor decoration change and a new wooden awning (perfectly feasible for a lumberjack to make).

I see why you think it is the same. It very well could be but I doubt it. I think it is more of a reference to Charlie in a letter to Maxy stating they could visit her family's cottage in British Columbia. The interior is a lot smaller in Walter's short compared to this one. Though it could have changed hands, wouldn't be too farfetched given all the coincidences we have already in the lore.
The reason why it is a reference is because it uses already established Canadian characters (Walter and Woodie) and shows them in a similar (or the same?) environment. We don't know for certain if Charlie and Winona are Canadian, just that their family has a cottage in BC.

Ancient Boats are now Monkey Pirate Raid safe.

It's a welcome change, but this isn't the issue with monkey raids.

lol, well, yes. A cabin is just a cabin if you strip away the context.

Not outside the realm of possibility that Charlie put a replica of her childhood home into the Constant.

I'm very much looking forward to the caves update. I wonder if they're going to fix the ruins and make them have more Don't Starve-like generation?

Some things to keep in mind, the “caves update” will also release with new skill trees, my best guesses as to who will get these skill trees are Wendy & Webber & Maybe Walter? The update will go into beta in September meaning it’s actual full release will most likely come in October.. what does this mean?

Well… let’s let the self-appointed advocate for all things spooky (that’s me) inform you!

It’s OFFICIALLY the Month of Spooky! :wilson_evil::spidercowers:

So it just makes the most logical sense that the next “caves update” will focus on spooky stuff and also spooky character skill trees.

(or the annoying kid who tells annoying repeat campfire stories over and over)

Ahem anyway point is- The next content update is the month of spooky update.

And I’m hoping for some appropriately spooky content, skill trees and new skins!

Is the next update actually confirmed to also include skill trees? 0_0 then i'm very excited

If Walter gets a skilltree update I kind of hope it will have "ability badges" theme and "helpful for fellow survivers" theme, to go along with the scouts. Not sure if this fits the spooky theme, after all he is more then "this annoying kid who tells campfire stories over and over again". (at least in my past we scouts members [not english speaking ones, but still based on scouts in anglosaxon places] were more focused on the ability learning and especially the helpful-altruistic behaviour compared to the survival camp aspect only. Also in my place especially the YOUNG scouts, that I consider Walter to be since he's obviously not older then a younger teen, focus on more on a daily-helping-society mindset and the learning-and-refining-basic-creative-and-mental-abilities part while when you transcended to the older scouts the survival wilderness aspect and teaching younger scouts became more of a focus. But then...not sure if it's the same for scouts in Canada and especially scouts of the past especially considering Canada offers actually dangerous wilderniss compared to most middle european forests and mountain area.)

They never said anything about skill trees, just caves and shadow content. We just got a skill tree + QoL update so we're probably not getting any new skill trees until the update after this next content one.

I wish. Im hungry for actual content and tired of having years of buffs to characters...

I mean JoeW can always correct me if I misunderstood the roadmap but.. the key word here is “each” meaning that all 4 planned updates will contain QoL, New Content, and character updates?

So far we had Scrappy Scavangers, New Content, QoL & Wigfrid & Willow Skill Trees.

Staying Afloat, New Content, QoL & Wurt & Winona skill trees.

we will be releasing 4 major updates; each containing a mix of QOL, content and additional character updates.

Wigfrid and Willow's skill trees were added before Scrappy Scavengers, specifically with the update that introduced the Frostjaw.

Updates seem to alternate between content and QoL + skill trees, so skill trees next update seems unlikely.

The more I look into it, the more convinced I am that this is the same cabin. The property is owned by Winona and Charlie's family when they were both kids, but in their adult years, we know Charlie lives in San Francisco, and Winona lives in Ohio. It's also unclear where Winona and Charlie's parents are in the short, but based on the style of attire from the Winona Charlie family photo, they appear to be Asian Americans, which is confirmed in the new animated short (various paintings and house decorations are very Asian inspired). This is an important detail, because in Asian cultures, deceased loved ones are honored through offerings, usually consisting of fruit and tea/sake, as well as incense. One of these shrines to honor a dead family member is seen in the animated short, complete with everything mentioned. This could imply that one or both of the parents are not alive at the time of this short (which would explain why there are only two beds in the cottage).

 image.png.c2d34d0031b938911783695b1ae15860.png

All of this is to say that I'm confident that when Charlie mentions the family cabin up in BC, the parents are out of the picture, leaving Winona and Charlie as the only ones who own it. Once Charlie disappears, we know many years go by before Maxwell starts taking people (at least long enough to take Wagstaff from a middle aged adult into an old man). During this time, I think it is reasonable to assume that Winona being the only "family" left to use the family cabin wouldn't hold onto it, and would just be reminded of her "dead" little sister every time she went there.

Woodie also apparently lived in a Canadian city, but then moved to a cottage on an island. While at that cabin, he somehow got ahold of a Voxola radio. An easy explanation would be that Winona had it, as she worked at the company, and left it on the property when selling it, and Woodie found it.

SPECULATION OVER

This brought a pretty glaring issue with the lore to my attention though. We know that Winona got a job in Ohio (presumably at the Voxola Radio Co.) before the San Fransisco earthquake, as Charlie wrote her a letter congratulating her on finding a job. We also know that Wagstaff just so happened to be in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake, with a storage unit there. This means either one of two things:

  1. Wagstaff is stealing from people in California, all while OWNING A FACTORY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY, and just so happens to be the one man with the key to finding out where the sister of one of his employees disappeared to.
  2. Winona just so happened to get a job in the state where the man who (on the other side of the country) found the key to getting her sister back, will later open up a factory, in her line of work.

Either way Winona's luck seems VERY extreme. I hope Klei can find a way to expand on this to make it not so every-planet-in-existence-aligned-and-that's-why-Winona-is-here

Isn't Woodie's cottage a lot shorter why would he go through all the trouble of making the house smaller ?Woodie_House_2.png

I think it's possible Winona just decided to work in ohio with no relation to Wagstaff's shenanigans before everything, as his discovery to the Constant has not happened yet. This is wayyy before the factory was even considered since it was only up for a couple of days until the fire in 1919. It's important to remember Winona didn't just so happen to find Wagstaff out of sheer luck, she searched for over a decade to find her sister, prodded and scoured every clue and hint she could possibly get and the best and most recent clues lead to Wagstaff and his factory that was still spry so she decided to get a job there to look for clues in the end.

Wagstaff's journey started in 1906 same year as the San. Fransisco earthquake, which started the whole charade of becoming an industrialist for the next decade of time, the radios, his own portal design, experiments to get closer to the Constant to revolutionize the world with this discovery. and Since his journey hasn't been the most perfect (including Maxwell not being the greatest at removing evidence), multiple clues have been found.
