So. The new two trees. Let's talk about it?

Recommended Posts

I know there's gonna be more than two, how does anyone feel about these anyway? Different powers and addons on using or consumption, gemstones from a tree... Could it be ruin gems from them perhaps? It would be kinda insane if it would be ruin gems but also wouldn't surprise me nor sounds unbalanced since we get stacked with those after a good few resets with fuelweaver. If it's gonna be ruin gems, that is, then I guess it'll kill off the drag of needing to abuse fuelweaver to keep printing those gem. There's varg farms if it's regular gems, then Klei would kinda just give us a rather pointless tree to grow. It seems like effort to grow one anyway, I feel like ruin gems would be neat as a decent chance to get.

Nightberries or whatever they are called grown on gloom tree are okay I guess? Alternative to moggles is always appreciated, though not a lot of problems with lighting. Most needed lighting like that is if we don't see hidden threats or ruin raiding, but we know that ruins don't exactly generate RNG like to be as threatening on second and multiple times, so seems like a mid-game or early option to keep track of your surroundings. Not too useful but still fun and decent that I'd likely farm for just to not need to use moggles much.

What kind of tree's ya'll hoping for to grow? Do you like the current showcased trees? And does it encourage you to go sailing for these new treasures to explore and grow?

THe gem tree will pribably be normal gems. The way they said it on stream didnt really imply any new type of gem and i feel theyd heavily hint it to hype us up for it

Itll probably be some ridicilous low %for anything other than red/blue. Itll be nice for some passive gem intake aside from seasonal dogs/setting up vaarg farms

Only thing im hoping for the Glowberry tree is if it can grow underground. Id love to set 2/3 up at my ruins entrance

I imagine it'll mainly be regular gems I mean not too many people use varg farms so this would be the ideal way for normal players to get gem stockpiles makes even more sense when you consider the number of characters who use gems for character specific crafts has gone up over the years.

Honestly, if treasures will remain a fairly uncommon thing you need to go out of your way for to get, I would be down for the gem trees giving the ruins gems. Most likely something like a 50% split for blue and red, 20% for purple, 25% split for orange and yellow, and 5% for green gems (as Klei really does not like making green gems common from anywhere but the ruins…). Doing so would make them nice for casual play and also pretty nice to strive for a bunch of them in your spare time.

As for the nightberry, I’m really hoping it gets a crockpot recipe which retains the nightvision effect. I would love to replace my banana shakes with the dish for light needs, since I normally use the enlightened crown for light and that becomes fairly problematic for the ruins where fights will prety frequently dip the crown below 85%. I do know glow berry mousse can work for this, but the light radius can become particularly small once the effect is at or over halfway through the duration. Being able to pop the dish in a polar bearger bin and have vision while the sanity passively recovers during the effect without dimming would be pretty nice.

I honestly feel like it’s going to be another one of those things Klei adds to the game that’s half-baked and shoe horned into the game in an odd and highly under utilized location, such as a rare drop from a sunken chest, or a Boss loot drop.

And it’ll end up IDENTICAL to the under utilized Moon Quay Palm Trees that by all means COULD be used elsewhere to liven up long outdated areas of the game like the Oasis or those very empty beach islands out at sea.

These trees look Fantastic, and would have probably perfectly fit the vibe for “swamp” or “jungle” biome, but Mark my words… we won’t get a cool new biome like that.

And being brutally honest, I haven’t been too impressed with a DST update since idk.. probably Forgotten Knowledges?

Which added eyeball pleasing new biomes, mobs and resources etc.

Same. Like sure, the lore-loving side of me liking the interaction of the 4 lore characters in the trailer but still.

You got a relatively safe haven from all the sanity-related chaos in the caves, some mystery for the lore and good moon glass resources without having to go all the way to lunar island.

But this was also the time Klei started NOT DOING a thing for the Sealed Portal (and boy, believe it when I say it's almost 3 years and counting) and left it to literal dust. When Host of Horrors came out, I thought the spark arks gotta be placed onto the portal for the security pulses to be inserted into them but nope. You can just wait at the Archives' entrance for those pulses. Like, ugh.

I'm gonna be honest. The surprise seeds are what I'm really expecting to carry the update.

I've talked about this extensively. But the ocean's biggest issue is that most of the stuff out there just doesn't have any use back on the mainland. And while a lot of the changes they're making are nice, they still feed into that problem.

Surprise Seeds though? No such case.

With Gem Trees, the value is obvious. You are literally growing precious materials on trees. Sure, you can reset the ruins to get a bunch of gems in bulk. But Ancient Fuelweaver is a hard boss that takes a good chunk of investment to do. While the Stonesprout Trees just, y'know. Produce completely passively. And hell, with salt collection being made way, way easier. You could use Dust Moths in the archives to renew Thulecite, making all ruins gear completely (And practically) renewable without ever having to fight AFW.

But even if ruins gems are exceedingly rare or even non-existent from Geode Fruit, them serving as a constant supply of Red, Blue, and Purple gems would still be really good. Sure, a Varg Farm would probably be faster, and possibly also easier to set up depending on how rare Surprise Seeds are overall. But again, Stonesprout Trees would will take very little commitment comparatively. Only requiring you to find and plant the seed instead of building an entire farm, locating the vargs, and using gems to teleport them in. Plus most varg farms are dependant on Winona Gaming for her catapults. So y'know, a lot of steps. Hell, depending on how fast they grow, you might only need 1 or 2 to supply a constant enough stream of gems to make the Telelocator focus actually practical. Wouldn't that be the dream, eh?

Nightthorn Trees though? Those don't just excite me, they give me faith.

Klei has historically been extremely stingy with light sources. Mushlamps are probably the best example. Not only are they the main drop from Toadstool, an extremely spongey raid boss. But they're not even infinite light sources unless you kill Celestial Champion. A Completely separate raid boss. And even then you can only get what? six stationary infinite light sources per CC kill? Yeah it's a bit silly.

Though Klei may be a bit over-protective of light sources in general. Portable, hands-free light sources? Yeah that's a bit more justified. Light Sources that don't take an equip slot are genuinly kind of cracked. Moggles or a Miner's hat means sacrificing your helmet and either either your backpack or body armor. The Magiluminessence means sacrificing your backpack and is ruins-locked in general. Even dropping your lantern on the ground means you have a limited area to work or fight in around it. So being able to have everything; helmet, backpack, tool, and light? That is MASSIVE. Basically your only options to get that right now are by playing WX or Wormwood, or just farming the absolute hell out of Glowberries. The latter of which is possible, but not exactly feasible.

So for Klei to just like- introduce a new fruit that doesn't just give light, but complete night vision??? And can be outright farmed at your base??? These might genuinely end up being the most game-changing thing added to DST sense Bundling Wraps. And is exactly the kind of boon that ocean content needs to be worth a rat's ass.

They seem to make ocean exploring and tresure hunting much rewarding.

Look wise they look extremely pretty. And lore wise I assume they are likely related to ancient's in some way.(Ancient lore = Automatic good content)

They encourge you to go for ocean looting, and as @Theukon-dos said, they have the potential to be next game changer.

I hope they become next alternatives to ruins loot and light sources. And I hope we get more trees/plants.

It’s not about how “Useful” they are, it’s all about the Presentation of Where and How you find them..

Would you rather obtain these trees randomly at very low % Chance from raiding the new Pirate Loot Boats as they sail by..

OR

Would you much rather sail out to a distant island somewhere where these bizarre trees grow as a natural part of the islands atmosphere?

Something Similar to the Lunar Islands, or maybe even the Shipwrecked Volcanic Islands.. etc.

My logic is that those Pirate Monkeys had to have looted those Trees & Seeds from SOMEWHERE right?? So why can’t I sail to that same Island they looted this stuff from?

They didn't find the seeds they found the underwater treasure just like the player can from bottles

Yes.

Tresure hunting is finally gonna be worth it, thus there'll be an actual reason to sail later on in the game. Heck, I could even see myself going out and getting some tresures early on now, especially when playing in groups.

They said they will look into wigfrid not being left out

Yes, for that i said it. I hope they will do it throw unique dishes, that aren't a better option to eating the raw fruit (if not we are in the same scenario of a downside not being a downside...) but i dont have much hope seeing what they did with mushcake or taffy (srly, who complaint about wigfrid not being able to recover sanity throw taffy...)

no idea how klei thought supplying more gems and yet another nightvision method were priorities to add

That all depends on how much they will actually be needed later in the late game, and yeah I’m not a game developer, but listen.. Klei gave Wickerbottom a book to lock the world into permanent full moon phases, I am pretty sure that it wouldn’t be too much harder for them to code something like the highly angry with you Shadows to (in the late game after rifts are opened up) “Shroud the world in Darkness”

The Miasma effect when Ink Blights show up even come very close to being this very exact thing…

But if I was writing the story for DST- We are meddling survivors caught up between two forces that are at war with one another, and.. if you side with the Moon Alter, then obviously the Shadow Side should be wanting you dead that much more, and Vice Versa..

If I was writing the story of DST the moment you side with Wagstaff and his Moon Alter God, the Shadows become enraged (like how you see pure horror as the upgraded version of Nightmare fuel) So if the game was to suddenly have flurries of darkness that weren’t tied specifically to Time of Day- Those trees that can grow night vision juice just became your best friend…

still, a low chance can be fixed by just getting 100 gem trees.

I like the ideas of the trees but I don't think they'll be too useful (also their artwork looks completely out of place.)

Literally not needed

A filler content, meant to make the update look like it has anything noteworthy beyond crab king's rework

Me when the ocean update doesn't actually try and fix the ocean's HUGE leaks (haha)
