What would you add into the game to make this game more fun to play alone?

Recommended Posts

Lately, I've been trying hard to find people to play with. Either to break up the monotony of tedious tasks or to ensure a civilization speedrun on every start.

In recent history, I'm having less fun playing alone.

The question in the title is not for you if you find the game to be perfect as it stands.

The most fun I've had playing dst alone is something that I actively preach against when it comes to solutions to problems that exist in game, being mods. Namely, the Island Adventures mod.

Shipwrecked is amazing, and standalone, I believe that Island Adventures is better than singleplayer Don't Starve by virtue of very ironed out mechanics and features that are a lot more fair, despite introducing features that make the game harder.

However, I've come full circle in wanting company to play with in Island Adventures.

I'm currently waiting with bated breath for the hamlet version.

I love singleplayer, but the problem I have with singleplayer is the sheer performance issues I have compared to dst and lack of skins. It comes to a certain point where when I amass a long day count, issues start to arise, as well as gamebreaking bugs that leads me to losing my entire inventory when ctrl+rightclicking objects into a container or backpack.

For me, the way for me this game will be more fun alone is ironically, dependent on mods, and the possibility that I'll have a world that has all the singleplayer shards.

I'd like to hear the community's thoughts on what you'd like introduced to make this game more fun to play alone.

If I had to say what would need to be added by klei, I would say the capacity for economy, traditional currency and mobs to do trading with. Basically a hamlet-like island.

As crazy as this is going to sound… Bots.

As in: being able to have computer A.I. Controlled teammates. Even if Bots aren’t as good as playing with real Humans.

Bots could still solve a lot of the games problems.

With Bots I could get an A.I. Wendy for her Petal Buff on Abigail, + an A.I. Wolfgang for his Double Damage, and that ALONE would make the high health sponge boring AF Boss fights so so soooooo much more doable Solo.

Thats petal buff+Wolf damage+ Whatever you as the player are doing.

Klei designs DST content with the intention you’ll be doing the content as a Group…

And Bots would be able to do things such as: Prevent (or at least help a small bit) you from dying to swarm of Water Strider Spiders just by the spiders attempting to attack more than one target (You)

Im not sure if there are any mods that already do something like this, but if there’s not- If I was a mod creator this would’ve been the FIRST Mod I created for DST.. so I’d be highly shocked there’s nothing like it on the Mod shop.

Probably because it's a nightmare to code

Our last interaction on one of my threads resulted in saying OP is wrong which is blatant blasphemy, but if dst ever allowed for crossplay, I'd actually use it to do fake bots for myself on my mega world.

I'd make it so that the switch version the hypothetical crossplay would do tasks for me on my world.

CK eliminator which can instantly destroy him and his spawn point. Costs nothing to craft and available to every characters at any time.

Y?

Coding this might not be that difficult as long as the devs play their game and knows what to do, there's already a mod that automatically fight dfly for you, the real issue is this would eat up all your RAM

It'd be kinda neat if perhaps there was a weekly or monthly challenge map that the community could play on.

Basically everyone loads up the same map that has been tweaked by klei to give extra challenges in certain areas depending on a theme or whatnot.

Now you could play this in a group, or play alone - and if you play alone they could pull a dark souls where you can see other players notes and warnings and such around your world.

This is a really good question.

More interactive NPCs would be nice. I know many aren't a fan of pearls tasks but I don't mind them and I'd love for Pig king and new Npcs like Billy and Mumsy having tasks for us to do as well. The more tasks you do for them the more you can interact and trade with them.

Billy and Mumsy offering unique decorations/plants/seeds for trade would be real nice and if you reach a certain level of friendship perhaps they migrate to your base to live with you. This would almost feel like having other players around that provide you with unique resources. They could give you some Gorge resources like tree taps to farm sap etc.

Followers being slightly revamped/upgraded would help too. Perhaps gifting pigs/bunnymen cooked crock pot meals instead of raw carrots and meat could increase their follower timer by a lot and allow them to be more effective or perform additional tasks.

The world in general just being a bit more alive with new mobs and a less empty ocean would also help.

New weather effects late game, chances for heavier snowfall and snowstorms or more intense heat waves in summer would also be nice and give incentive to keep playing solo past the first few in game years would help. Not only new challenges but the new weather effects can give new resources too. A super severe extremely cold winter with snow that slows you down could have a new mob from hunts with new drops or you could obtain a piece of everlasting ice from the middle of a snowstorm that once put in a fridge slows down the freshness meter of anything else put in that fridge.

LFG

Some use for items that are for multiplayer, like hearts or lazy Deserter.

Since when playing alone you have more control over destructive forces (no risk someone else is caught by Bearger at base while you're away etc) there could be more things that threaten your surroundings. Preventable, in some way, but might bring some excitement.

Cave generation revamp.
Particularly focused on Ruins progression. Less running around randomly, more chokepoints and puzzles and traps (looking at you Hamlet).

Could be really fun if the ruins like...completely regenerated when reset instead of just repopulating its contents. Like, deleting itself and generating new terrain and everything. Then you'd have a new area to explore each time without having to make a new world. Even moreso with a wider variety of room types and setpieces.

Make the fishing game Give more food (or give us more hunger oriented Fish dishes) and id fish for entire seasons. Its actually quite fun, shame you're basicly substinence farming if you try to make it your main food source

I'd improve some more of the bosses fight-wise, in the same vein as the Ancient Guardian did in the crafting UI QoL update. I shy away from almost all non-seasonal bosses because they have such badly-designed fights that I don't even want to go near them as a sole player without at least one stack of Gunpowder in my inventory or making a Bunnyman town right next to the boss I want to fight.

And I've seen the argument from other forumites that they're meant to be fought with dozens of items like Weather Pains and Ice Staffs when alone, which if true is just terrible design. It's just avoiding the bad mechanics instead of improving them.

Repair kit for weather pain would be a fantastic qol improvement lol.

Follower rework that makes all followers have more utility actions to make up for no friends.

Spiders could do a few things for webber.

Fishing is much better at getting food than you think, if you put your lure right next to the edge you can insta catch fish, and catch many of them very fast.

Deep sea bass also hook on extremely fast so you can catch them at insane speeds.

However only coastal and seabass schools are relevant for fishing unfortunetly.
