Do you use Eye Mask after acquiring Dreadstone Helm?

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious, recently I got Dreadstone Helm before Eye Mask and I was asking myself if it was worth fighting Eye of Terror, I concluded it was better to wait for the long winter nights and fight Twins of Terror instead to get the shield.

When I get the Dreadstone helm I never use the eye mask, generally fight the eye around mid-autumn so i can get some use from the mask. the Whites are pretty useful as it's the best diary item as it's easy to get and good for ice cream and other diary dishes, only reason to do it more than once or after Nightmare WerePig.

Nowadays, I stay away from the Eye Mask in pretty much any run, not even bothering with the Eye of Terror, since the reward is way too finicky. Being able to feed it sounds good until you realize that 315 durability isn't exactly high. Running around the world? Maybe, but people mess up. Forget to repair it one time? Miss a kite on a later depths worm wave? Went to pet the cute bunny before ditching all your meat? Yeah, that's one boss fight down the drain.

While I haven't experimented with the Dreadstone Helm all that much, what I tend to do instead is use Football Helmets early game (duh), then put together the Celestial Portal fairly early on (because nobody should fight Crab King without Wickerbottom and her bee army), do a quick switch to Wigfrid, craft 20+ Battle Helms (cheap and comes with 525 durability) then live on those until end times - way more convenient than the Eye Mask can ever hope to be.

There's no reason for me to use the eyemask after getting the dreadstone helmet unless I have low sanity and no sanity food.

The eyemask does a good job before that: easy boss to kill, can be refueled with disposable monster meat, saves pig skin. I keep it away from mobs that can stunlock me and high-damage bosses. I might bring it to a boss fight if I'm also bringing some other backup helmets (like football helmets).

I don't use the eye mask at all, I like the boss fights but I don't like doing crossover content no matter how good the games are in the crossover, it's a me issue.

If I had to say anything though I will say that the dreadstone helm is better as it does it's regen for free excluding sanity, so once you take care of that and you're not just tanking all hits from everything constantly you've got yourself an infinite 90% armour item for the head slot.

EoT can be summoned wherever you want without needing to go somewhere, then you kill him in approximately 4.6 seconds, so it makes sense that his hat drop would become outclassed. Like Nnumber said he's still good for an on-demand portable dairy factory.

I don't acquire the Dreadstone Helm. I never managed to clear the Ruins purely because I can't properly prepare for it, therefore I am unable to shake the Nightmare Werepig's pillars to initiate the fight.

Just a recommendation that might sound crazy at first but consider trying with Webber and a tier 3 spider den it provides food, sanity, and health for the ruins.

No matter what advice you give, one will always forget to prototype the golden axe when going for nightmare werepig :wilson_cry:

Having food, sanity and health isn't a problem, it's just that I am so afraid of crafting too much armor for the trip that I won't make more than two Football Helmets and the bare minimum of what is needed for the Iridiscent Gem.

Oh that's simple then just bring a pre crafted chest with you and stuff the things you don't immediately need inside of it you can leave what you don't need behind inside of it and retrieve it later.

I hope we get a skin for the eyemask.

If you're playing solo and have a few skins, give this a whirl. Doesn't appear to have been updated for dreadstone items as of yet, but it isn't exactly hard to mess around with the mod for a bit and hack those in too.

Eye boss loot sounds good on paper but actually using it kinda sucks. Both the shield and helmet have such low durability which makes it really easy to accidentally break them, and the actual stats of the items aren't even that good. The helmet isn't that egregious considering the Eye of Terror is essentially a floating punching bag, but the shield is just never worth using. The Twins take forever to kill outside of winter and even then it's a slog without resorting to panflute spam. You're also not allowed to miss a night or the whole fight resets, and your reward for putting up with theses bosses is a refuellable tentacle spike. Sure you can opt to wear different items in your body/head slot (magi + enlightened crown) but if you're used to kiting with a cane then you'll realize that you're leaving yourself vulnerable whenever you swap to your cane.

The saddest part about the shield though is that it's essentially a much worse ornery beefalo.

51 damage breakpoint isn't the worst but I don't value it as much on characters not named wigfrid or Wolfgang.

Wolfgang at max mighty has the same breakpoints as a dark sword using the shield and wigfrid is just allergic to death and the 63 damage 2 shots monkey.

Wigfrid with a shield is actually good value with the crown.

As Borat would say "very nice"

Twin is much harder to fight than nightmare werepig. At this point, we (I and people who i played with) just kill twin for the green and orange gem. One green gem is equal whole dread stone set, or whole bright/void set.
There quite a limited amount of green gem we can generate in certain amount of time. AFW, DF, Twin, all have 20 days cooldown...

Shield? we just give it away to people who needed it, or throw them at base and let whoever want to take.

Other than that, 20000 HP double boss drop less loots than a 10000 HP single boss, while each of the double boss are the same difficulty as that single boss, drop one loot that only equal 1/3 of the single boss, shield of terror is too weak right now.

I like the shield of terror simply because i dont have to swap to armor to fight really small threats. I like wearing utility stuff on my head at all times, either a light to be turned on, or sanity equipment, or a eyebrella. I dont want to have to drop a lantern to kill something at night either (so it would be particularly nice in lights out but i ironically have not actually fought them in lights out, maybe i will this time considering i’m basing at the suspicious chest thanks to the guardian pigmen and their handy torches providing temperature neutral infinite light

I find myself using eye mask frequently, simply because of how easy to replenish it's durability.

Heck, even rots will do nicely. Eye mask is meant for everyday skirmishes like with spiders/bees, I think it's a great item.

Can't say the same for the shield though, it's very underwhelming...

I don't like using dreadstone because Sanity is actually quite annoying to get low with constant harrassment from shadow creatures. You be in the ruins and fighting some pieces and the bishops wear you down and you lose sanity at a super accelerated rate so you gotta kill terrorbeaks and they can ambush you when you're busy. Very annoying.

Wilson with beard-slots is good for the eyetems though because he can hold a stack of 40 rot in each 3 slots that never expires and feed his items whenever necessary. Glommers goop is a good item to slot in as it heals a decent amount without expiring.

:wilson_love:

I love Dreadstone, but I still use the Eye Mask because it's my favorite item in the game! I love the concept of a monster helmet that I need to feed and it's so beautiful! Astonishing!
As for not being the best option among the others, I'm aware, but I don't feel the need to have something better, with the exception of some very specific fights. Unfortunately, I don't feel the same way about the shield, I miss slightly higher damage.
