More set pieces.

Recommended Posts

Honestly, sailing into nowhere and then finding random little islands can feel so intriguing and exciting.
There are so many possibilities to think of: wild gardens, home of a stranded pigman, maybe a biome full of boulders that can sometimes drop gems, hell maybe it could have a lifeless mini-cave with an abandoned mini-base or full of spiders and spider queens that guard buried treasure. Stumbling upon such significant surprises can really spice up the gameplay.

Interactions between mobs and plants/structures, different seasonal effects that don't happen every year, more mobs changing apperance and/or behaviour during a certain season would make the world feel more alive.

But yeah, more setpieces would also contribute to that, so i agree with op

Yes, definitely more set-pieces are needed to reinstate the "adventure & wonder" aspects into DST in elevated capacity. And, dare I say, a flavor on the Survival facet. Plus pls KLei do bring back (in higher spawning rates) classic DS sets like:

   • Lone PigGuard in Ruins

   • MacTusk Village

   • Killer Bee Hayfield

And why not also include, in Survival mindset, the Winter & Summer traps - to spice-up things a bit:

   • Icebox Trap

   • Summer Icebox Trap

The more set-pieces spread across the world (Forest & Cave shards alike), the better.

This. The 1st sentence. 1000% this.

I see the Pig Guard Plant Fields and the Killer Bee Hayfield setpieces very often, they aren't that rare. But yeah, the Imprisoned Pig and the Miner's Camp are very very rare.

The problem isn’t lack of set piece, it’s lack of creative placement of said set piece..

Like if you look at the photos above:

IMG_5853.webp.aa86306abeac359ccde293b70436c72d.webp

there is this image of pigs that WILL aggressively attempt to attack you if you go anywhere near them.

But.. as you can see- Going through them is the only way you’re gonna get to where you’re trying to go.

And with DST Klei just throws them out into the WIDE OPEN so you can literally just avoid their entire existence rather than like they were in solo DS where you HAD to pass them or your stuck contained to that one area.

Now that we have a sailable ocean it may be too late to add these kind of challenges, because NOW you could just plop a grass raft down into the water beside it and swim past to the other side.

Rather then being forced to fight them or run past them.

So people can't just join your day 1 world and trigger those things on purpose

True. That's why I've underlined the Survival aspect of such set-pieces. Look at it like this: in pubs, if newbies/casuals/trolls/griefers trigger it 1st Autumn, will be a test of wits for all players on server in "uncompromising survival wilderness" vein. If all people die/leave will be akin to DS's - server resets and that's the end of said adventure, in a classic DS failure way. No biggie, can start anew in another World Generation. Yet enough am sure will brave the setting and prevail (I & almost all my Steam friends can join servers in any season and hardcore it, is thrilling and fun). As for personal servers, can always kick and roll-back if such trial & tribulation is not to your fancies. Look at the positives: a throw-back to DS's intransigent Survival ethos.

I for one almost never saw such set-pieces in pubs (dedicated Survival and/or Endless vanilla). I've very-rarely encountered Pig Guards, but rest.. probably not my luck. Or dedicated servers have more restrictive spawn rates for such sets? Who knows.
Still I wish their default spawn-rates could be significantly bumped-up.

The thing is, those punishes everyone on the server if one person made a mistake, this is unfair for those who knows about this trap and avoided it.

Communication doesn't solve this problem all the time either, even if you put down a hundred signs, people still won't read those or even understand your language, and griefing/trolling exist...or maybe they're just new and don't know it's a trap.

This happening on a public server would almost certainly result in a rollback, not a regen, what's the point of adding this if this always results in a rollback/regen anyways? Wouldn't that mean it has 0 effect on your actual gameplay other than occasionally rolling back? And tbh having to rollback every 5 seconds really demotivates people, why bother do anything if it would be reverted just because a random player touched that chest for a thousandth time?

I'm not sure about it, but one person on the forum met him in the caves. As far as I understand, this is an insanely rare phenomenon

Yes. According to my datamining this Miner's Camp sp can spawn in the game without mods, with a VERY RARE chance. In recent one year or two I've seen it twice in other forums and the seeds worked as well having this sp spawned.

Another interesting thing is that all old farms in the set pieces had been replaced with Drying Racks in a QoL update. None of those set pieces can actually spawn in DST, however.

Another two. Pig King with pig torches:

Insanity trap:

In the game files, in the 'static_layouts' folder, there are plenty of interesting setpieces. However, winter and summer traps are impossible to generate in DST because their code is commented out. I have no idea why the rest of them are so rarely encountered in the game. On the other hand, the ones with pigs and merms appear too frequently, and there are three types of them...
