Warly skill ideas

Recommended Posts

I got really inspired to brainstorm some ideas for Warly after reading recent posts of skill tree ideas for other characters.
Would love to hear your thoughts on these.

The skills are in no particular order, they're just concepts.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

True Gourmet
Each time Warly eats a unique dish, he will slowly regenerate Hunger, Health, Sanity by 5, multiplied by amount of unique dishes eaten in a row. Eating the same food in that chain will reset the bonus.

(For example:
1st food eaten is Butter Muffin. It will give standard stats.
2nd food eaten is Meaty Stew. Eating it will make Warly regenerate 5 of each stat as a bonus.
3rd food eaten is Bacon n' Eggs. Eating it will make Warly regenerate 10 of each stat.
4th food eaten is Butter Muffin again. This time, the bonus is reset, and Warly doesn't restore extra stats. The cycle begins anew.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trimming Fat
I: Warly gains the ability to cut 1 Meat into 2 Morsels, in addition to a 33% chance of receiving 1 Butter.
II: Warly can cut 1 Raw Fish into 3 Fish Morsels + 33% chance of 1 Butter.

Portioning
Warly can now cut 1 Vegetable into 2-3 Chopped Vegetables - they restore 1/3 of Vegetable's stat, but act as full value for crockpot dishes. They cannot be used for grinding however.
(Example: 1 Potato can be cut into 2-3 Potato Cubes, each of which acts as a full potato in crockpot)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marinate
Warly can now use Bottle to put inside any edible raw ingredient to let it marinate within 4 minutes, functioning like Growth Formula Starter.
Warly can consume marinated food after eating a crockpot dish. Marinated food has 1-day Food Memory, restores x1.5 stats, has doubled spoilage time, and has removed stat penalties.

Wing It!
Warly can no longer cook Wet Goop when using edible ingredients in a crockpot. The dish that would otherwise fail will instead turn into a randomized dish that correlates to one of the ingredients used.
Wet Goop can still be cooked if Warly only uses inedible ingredients in crockpot.

Hearty Feast
Warly can now put crockpot dishes on a table, allowing multiple survivors to eat together. Each crockpot dish can regenerate up to 60% of its stats to all survivors participating in the feast, which lasts for 6 seconds per crockpot dish on the table.
After finishing the feast, the participating survivors regenerate the other 40% of dish stats within 2 minutes.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mush Room for More
Warly can now hang Mushrooms on a drying rack, which finish drying within 4 minutes, nullifying their stat penalties.
Dried Red Mushroom: +25 Hunger
Dried Green Mushroom: +25 Sanity, +12.5 Hunger
Dried Blue Mushroom: +30 Health, +12.5 Hunger

Savour the Flavour
I: Buffs from Warly's dishes now last twice as long.
II: Eating a dish that uses the same ingredient as the special dish will prolong the ongoing buff of his special dish by 2 minutes.
(For example: Eating Froggle Bunwich will extend Fish Cordon Bleu's buff by 2 minutes, since they both use the Frog Legs ingredient)

III: Warly's buffs will decay slower proportionally to his current hunger percentage, divided by two.
(For example: if Warly has 72% Hunger, buffs will tick down 36% slower)

Fast Food Delivery
Speeds up Portable Crockpot cooking time.
Warly is also able to interact with any crockpot that is currently cooking and perform an indefinite crafting animation, which accelerates its cooking speed.

I: Portable Crockpot now cooks 30% faster.
Warly can accelerate cooking speed by x2.

II: Portable Crockpot now cooks 40% faster.
Warly can accelerate cooking speed by x3.

III: Portable Crockpot now cooks 50% faster.
Warly can accelerate cooking speed by x5.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sharing the Taste
I: Foods that give Warming/Cooling buffs last thrice as long.
II: Attacking under effect of Cooling food will Chill mobs, causing them to suffer double efficiency + duration from Ice attacks.
Warming food will Scorch mobs, which makes them even more susceptible to Burning and for twice as long.

III: Breaking mobs out of Ice while under Chill debuff will force them to suffer triple damage.
Mobs under Scorch debuff will receive Burning damage ticks at triple speed.

Utilize Leftovers
I: Grinding produces extra 1-2 spices.
II: Portable Grinding Mill also grants 1 Chopped Vegetable* after grinding a vegetable.
(*Portioning skill)
III: Portable Crockpot now returns 1 random ingredient that was used for a crockpot dish.

Comforting Delight
If seasoned food is survivor's favorite, it will restore x2 more stats total when they consume it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grinding Proficiency
I: Warly can grind 5 seeds to produce 1-2 random Spices.
II: Warly can grind 6 petals to produce 1 Tillweed Salve.
III: Warly can grind 7 butterflies to produce 1 Butter.

On The Go
I: Warly can squash 2 Berries into 1 Fistful of Jam
II: Warly can combine 1 Twig with 1 Cooked Morsel to receive 1 Kabobs
III: Warly can combine 1 Berry with 1 Birchnut to receive 1 Trail Mix

----------------------------------------------- EDITED, Extra Suggestions below -----------------------------------------------

Carnivore Branch:

Accomplished Butcher - For each unique Meat dish in Warly's recent food memory, he receives the following bonuses:
I: Iron Stomach (2 dishes) - Warly no longer receives any negative penalties from crockpot dishes.

II: Intimidation (3 dishes) - When wielding a weapon, approaching passive creatures that would otherwise flee will instead freeze and shake in fear for a few seconds.

III: Precision for Incision (5 dishes) - First strike from Warly will deal x2 damage. All of his other attacks instead apply "Bleeding" to a living creature, which deals 10% of Warly's damage every second. Each strike stacks this up to 30%, decaying by 10% every 3 seconds.

Butcher's Cleaver - Warly can craft a Butcher's Cleaver with 3 Flint + 1 Twig - it deals 27.2 Damage, has 50 durability, and grants 1 extra Food drop upon death depending on creature's food drop table, if you finish it off with the Cleaver.

Indefinite Satisfaction - When Warly restores Hunger over his limit, the excess Hunger is converted into Health Regeneration of 0.33/sec.
This effect cannot occur if the eaten dish is still in Warly's food memory.

Banquet of the Grill - Warly can set up a Grill, which can hold up to 6 different meat types.
Raw Meat can be put in stacks.
Survivors can interact with it to begin cooking. In 5 seconds, the Grill instantly cooks all of the meat inside, which can be collected.

Grilling cooked meat instead for 45 seconds will finish preparing a Feast, which allows survivors to interact with it to begin eating for 25 seconds. The Grill consumes 1 of each type of Cooked Meat put in there.
Participating in the feast will grant survivors +3 Damage, +0.1 HP/sec, +0.1 Sanity/sec, +0.25 Hunger/sec for each meat used up in the grill. The buffs last for 4 minutes.

Warly can choose to season the entire feast to grant the corresponding buff to all participants. He can also add Butter to a grill to double the buff duration and boost the buffs by x1.5

This does not stack with Banquet of the Oven's buff.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vegetarian Branch:

Locally Fresh - Cooking a dish with vegetables during their favorite season will restore Warly's stats by an extra 25%, which does not stack with other vegetables used.

No Waste! - Cooking a crockpot dish with more ingredients used than its required minimum will have a 50% chance to duplicate the dish after it finishes cooking.

Husbandry - Warly can feed Volt Goats with Cut Grass up to 3 times daily.
Feeding them 12 times will make them drop 1 Electric Milk.
Feeding them 24 times will make them drop 1 Volt Goat Horn.
After feeding a goat 36 times, it will spawn a Baby version of itself, which grows into Adult within 10 days.

Banquet of the Oven - Warly can set up an Oven, which can hold up to 8 different vegetable types.
Raw vegetables can be put in stacks.
Survivors can interact with it to begin cooking. In 5 seconds, the Oven instantly cooks all of the vegetables inside, which can be collected.

Baking Cooked Vegetables instead for 45 seconds will finish preparing a Banquet, which allows survivors to interact with it to begin eating for 25 seconds. The Oven consumes 1 of each type of Cooked Vegetable put in there.
Participating in the banquet will grant survivors +3% Speed, +6% Working Speed, +0.1 HP/sec, +0.1 Sanity/sec, +0.25 Hunger/sec for each vegetable used up in the grill. The buffs last for 4 minutes.

Warly can choose to season the entire banquet to grant the corresponding buff to participants. He can also add Butter to the oven to double the buff duration and boost the buffs by x1.5

This does not stack with Banquet of the Grill's buff.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pescatarian Branch:

Fish Oil:
I: While under the effect of Fish Cordon Bleu, Warly's attacks cause Wetness to build up on targets.
II: While under the effect of a chilling food, every 3rd attack from Warly will act as hitting an enemy with Ice Staff if the affected enemy is under Wetness debuff.

Master Hooker - Warly can cast his Fishing Rod on items and mobs, pulling them towards him. Bosses will instead pull Warly himself.

Chill Out - Warly can apply Ice to a fish to make it regain half of its freshness. Putting ice in Chef's Pouch will also slow down Fish spoilage by x2.

Proficient Jerkster:
I: Warly can apply Nitre or Salt to a drying rack to cut drying time by 66%, which lasts for 9 uses. Food dried that way spoils x2 slower.
II: Warly can now eat Jerky food type after consuming a crockpot dish. Jerky has 1-day Food Memory, which gets nullified if it has been seasoned.

Desperate Measures:
I: Warly can use his Spear to fish in a pond, which consumes 8% of its durability.
II: Warly can craft a Fishing Net, which can be thrown into Ocean to catch and drag affected fish to himself. It costs 4 silk + 2 ropes to craft, and has a durability of 4 uses.

I love true gourmet. It sounds just like yum chaining from one hour one life, and it really fits. I feel like you could make a whole tree branch for it tbh, like special passives if you're consistently eating new foods

Portioning is also an excellent idea on allowing Warly to get more from farms without treading on wormwood

I really like like the *flavour* of some of these ideas so far!

I do really like the idea of better encouraging his gourmet, it is a natural game progression balancing as you get access to a further increasing variety of meals as you go on.
Building on what Brago-sama says too, I'd love to see a further tree built off it. Maybe if you manage to be unique enough to have all Meat Meals you get a meat bonus, you could also have a sea-food bonus and a vegetarian pathway too, all with their own buffs. They really also encourage actually *playing* warly which is what I think any version of his skill tree should do!

Having buffs last longer for him is a needed change! Portioning also could not even count as a full food once chopped, it could be 1/2 veg a chop in 2 etc and still be just as valuable in lots of meals where there is no minimum food value you just need some, or for making very easy filler.

Would just like to add, a lot of these numbers are tuned quite high! Defintely can be adjusted of course.
I would also be wary of the cooking speeds, I don't think that adds too much fun to him and I don't think has ever been an issue that can't be solved with more crockpots!

Interested to see how it all comes out in the end, good job!

I like a lot the true gourmet skills. That should be a character kit instead of skills.

The problem is after certain stage by finishing pig farms & banana berry farm kelps and stone fruit farm the problem isn't surviving anymore. In that stage you are bloomed with food, even farming is non essential anymore. For me I'd like to have skills that are quality over quantity.

Able to use salt & bottle to make pickles would be a nice idea. I'd like for warly to have additional kitchenware, like more intriguing drying deck, oven & grills. Be able to have utility spices like coffee to walk fast (maybe need ice so it's cheese proofed for first season) salt & addictive to keep food fresh etc.

Warly is a difficult character to retouch, he need new biome and new stuffs to support him. He along can be a content update.

Warly is a character I want to like but probably never will. He has a unique solution to problems, but setting up those solutions requires a degree of logistics and productivity that I’ll never see the advantages of during the few hours I play in pubs.

I’d prefer they specialize in easing the access to certain ingredients, like     let him have day 1 access to high quality fishing gear, and as a farming game fan, I’d love dedicated goat perks, not even for horns but murderless milk.

I'd also add "Iron Stomach" as a perk which basically sees no HP drain from eating any food. I say HP drain specifically because sanity drain can be utilized. On Warly, there's no reason to deliberately lower your HP

Oh, also, How about allow him to have a frying pan craft that doubles as a 51 damage weapon and a portable 3 ingredient crockpot that needs to be loaded up and instantly cooks dishes on an open campfire

as a perk ofc

not as base warly haha

Great suggestions! I’d just change a tiny itsy thing, that Warly “should” have at least one way to make wet goop, perhaps on normal crock pots, since otherwise he will be locked out of crafting the terra firma tamper in solo worlds

Good catch, I think it should be fine to make it give Wet Goop if you cook with only inedible ingredients in crockpot dish (like 2 twigs + 1 nightmare fuel + 1 bone shard, etc.)
Also thank you :]

Really like the new ideas!

Meat boosting damage, Vegetarian boosting husbandry and Pescatarian boosting cordon bleu in particular are really nice pairings.

Now I just want the changes to see how it plays! I wonder how difficult it would be to keep up those diets, to know if those skills are too strong or not. But there's definitely a version of the skills here that would make a really nice tree all pieced together. I do hope they take some inspiration. I know I'll be on the forums everyday during a warly skill tree beta campaigning for better if they don't!

One thing i had come to my mind : a Warly™  special grade fresh delivery backpack

what does this do:

This is a backpack have 10 slots only for edible items and have a inert inventory space like Fishing rod/Trusty Slingshot for which is a slot for a thermal stone. the temperature will last 2x then normal playerinventory.  When it is loaded with a hot thermal stone it will preserve its freshness 3x times (green state), But for food/meat which is stale (yellow & red state) it will rapidly decay by 3x speed.

when it loaded with cold thermal it will act like saltbox that prolong overall shelf life by 4x. (work only when the thermal is cold)

That is a very unique suggestion, I absolutely love that. Warly could definitely use a portable thermal container unique for himself, since his Chef's Pouch gets quickly underwhelming

So I might add to this later as I don't have time to now but I feel like Warly should get a skill to make butter and get more seasonings not related to farming.

I think it would be cool if you could also transform 1 Milk into 2 or 3 Butter for specific dishes (and mayhaps Milky Whites as well!), this should go well in tandem with Volt Goat milking skill.

As for seasonings outside of farming, I am curious to think of some as well.
Perhaps "Lunar Powder" from Moon Shrooms, which grants you extra 25% damage against Shadow Creatures?
"Beard Hair" could reverse Sanity Regeneration (which is basically opposite to Bee Queen Crown) for counteracting Enlightment.

I do wonder if Warly should be able to use minor foods like Roasted Birchnuts or Roasted Onions and etc. in Portable Seasoning Station, which have "food memory" as well, and apply them to a dish that will act like "spice", making them restore 20% Bonus Hunger upon consumption.
Eating the same "spice" that is in recent food memory will not restore any bonus hunger. It should be a fun little challenge to make his dishes even more diverse.

Besides these, I have no more ideas, sorry :s

What about perk that let you combine three of warly kitchenwares in one slot?

Harvester perk that you get one more meat from bigger animals or morsel from smaller.

Herding goats is an interesting pun, but it feels like every survivor should have that option.

Perserver perk - increases greatly efficiency of salt while restoring food freshness.

Sharing is caring - force feeding player non-monster dish could grant Warly 15 sanity.

Just few ideas :)

Portioning introduces too many new items, I would prefer something simpler like :

level 1 cooking a veggie results in 1 seed + 1 cooked veggie

level 2 : 2 veggie and 1 seeds

level 3 : 2 veggie and 2 seeds

I would love a butcher knife giving more meats.

Love your ideas, great stuff. I have a similar idea in gourmet cooking, where the more variety he has eaten for the entire time he has been played as, it gives him different buffs.

Other ideas I want to see that you touched on are uses for mushrooms (I was thinking different color mushroom omelettes maybe), more ways to get butter, and ofc more spices.

I would like a spice that reduces spoilage time (it’s a shame salt doesn’t do this already since that’s what normal salt does!), a spice that decreases hunger drain after eating it (satisfied longer like a slurper belt, maybe onion?) and I was thinking a spice that is like bug spray from hamlet . Very niche but a durian spice would make sense for this and give Wurt another way of having mosquitoes ignore her.

can’t wait for our chef to get some love!

It's not a very big perk but i'd love if there was a "collect from crockpots faster" node.

Warly already preps food faster but once the foods ready he lags behind. It would be a small but decent Qol for mid to lategame. Not game changing, but a FeelGood perk like Wormwoods gather crops faster/Red bees dont care about you perks

im sure the skill tree will have a few tiny skills, this should definetely be one of them.

Edit: also it could work for seasoning station i guess.

I think for alinements he should be able to make food based a creators and one dish

like for the for the shadow alignment

terrifying Carrot soft rat or  terrifying carrat soft rot: like the shadow equivalent of the carrat  but better instead of of being a skittish pocket pups it will be based of what people think rats are like Mangy prone to biting and disgusting the carrot is rotting made with one carrot and one pure horror

terrifying Anthracnose saladmander: Same as above dragon fruit has Anthracnose  Basically normal salamander but but the aggression of a ripe one dragon fruit one pure horror

Chili - Ramp up damage like Shadow Reaper

Garlic - Mini AoE from the powder

Honey - Slow mob down

Salt - Damage overtime

Or they use similar buff that players gets.

Chili: you get warmth (+5°) when carrying it and warmer (+0.5°) per hit

Honey: attack stronger

Salt: reduce the spoilage rate

Only garlic does not work, so it could just one shot Batilisk (regardless of actual damage) and maybe a very little on hit bonus (sanity or hp)
