I loathe having half my screen blocked by something that I have to click/Esc out of when I examine other players or skeletons

Look at this. It's approximately twice as big as the previous version, its size cuts off the examine quote for skeletons or longer character examination quotes until it's dismissed because character dialogue doesn't float on top of it the way it did before, and it doesn't go away - it prevents WASD input - until you click outside the infobox or hit Esc (maybe also Space or Enter?). This could be a disaster if you accidentally click on a skeleton at a time-sensitive moment like while kiting a boss.

I don't think it was necessary at all to replace the UI for examining other players with this. It's fine for Wilson's skill tree! It just does not need to take over the function of looking at other people's skins, equipment, and causes of death. There's nothing wrong with the current UI for that, and even if you want to give it a makeover simply because it hasn't been changed for a few years, surely its new look could be equally compact and unintrusive instead of a big bulky thing that prevents you from moving your character?

Another piece of evidence I believe supports the "other characters will receive skill trees in the future" theory. They've laid the groundwork for players to examine what branches/skills others have unlocked. This means having the clothing UI match the proportions of the skill tree UI.

I totally agree its a hinderance currently. Not even just for crucial moments but mis-clicking on another player while trying to run somewhere/pick up an item only to get stopped in your tracks for this UI is really annoying. Just like when I accidentally click one of my apps at the bottom of my screen right where the inventory is and it opens a new window.

Even if they are planning to give skill trees to more characters, it wouldn't hurt to make the skill tree interface pop out when you switch to that tab and have the clothing/equipment skin viewer stay the same size.

For that matter, it would be a major improvement just to have it either not immobilise you or immediately go away when you press a movement key.

They better not give skill trees to everyone, especially if they're as impactless as Wilson's I'd rather real content than tiny buffs for one mechanic or item, or crafting recipes that should be available to the character from the start.

I think it was in need of a visual update, the old inspect screen's design had the same style as UI all the way from the 2016 release of the game! And was the only remaining bit of it in the modern game.

But yea, mechanically, it stinks. At the very least you should be able to control your character while the pop up is active, not just disable movement/actions straight up! The old structure with the character/portrait on top of the clothing info was quite fine, as you mentioned it blocks much more of the screen than the old one.

Yeah it is a bit of a relic of the pre-Forge era visually, isn't it. But it could be the same size and layout and have that scroll design; scrolls are known for their ability to be rolled out to different sizes, so it would fit in well.

I am once again feeling old.

Also damn, I really still do miss that relic of an old menu.
As in, the visual design, absolutely not how menus were handled back then. Could you imagine the old character select screen with today's cast? Sheesh.

You mean you dont want to click 90 times to go through every single torso skin you own just to put on a nice shirt?

Oh, I mean, of course I would!
Now this is an old screenshot, my skirt count has like doubled since there, but I'm sure The Collection would be an absolute delight to sift through with the old menu!

Imagine having both Crafting UI and "new and improved" Inspect Player tab up at same moment on 1280x resolution. With dismiss buttons. While you can't control your character. And are in pub, so no pause. Clearly "a step in the right direction", KLei

Yeah, while I do like a lot about the new design, there's a lot of empty space and it's so unnecessary to have so much of your screen blocked and being unable to move just because of a single examination

I really prefer the appearance of the old one.

Same goes for a lot of the old UIs, really. Everything was just so easy on the eyes; crafting UI, character select, the main menu. It's felt like every update has been a functional step up but a stylistic step down. I'm sure there are plenty people who enjoy the new style, but man, everything is so... Brown...

I don't get the change. The old one was already complete and compact, why would they decide to make it bigger telling the same information? I know it's because Wilson, but wouldn't it be better to have a separate UI exclusive to Wilson for that? One that activates near a science machine or something. It only makes me suspect everyone will get a skill tree eventually.

The more I examine other players the more the new UI agitates me. The older version looked more refined and was so much less obtrusive than it is now.

I'd very much like to see the UI's size reduced and the inability to move fixed, if not it simply being changed back to the old UI, but until then here's a link to a client-side mod that restores the old design: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2950424470

If anyone's interested, there's also a client-side mod that restores the old crafting menu, and allows you to press a key to swap between the old menu and the new one to get the best of both worlds: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2839020127

It’s nice to have mods if your playing on PC, but I’m playing on Xbox where if Klei breaks something… I can’t rely on Mods to fix it. And having this much larger Inspection Menu cover up the Quote your trying to read of the dead players skeleton your inspecting (to find out how they died) is Broken..
