Well first off, that reward category is rigged… secondly, I can’t think of any other game more deserving of such a reward, but third (& perhaps most important..) I have a humble request towards anyone working at Klei-

To Truly win a Labor of Love reward you have to Love the Labor you do, so I’d like to ask the developers to start playing their own game, as someone who has been on many game forums I can say that great things both in terms of new content & redesigning outdated content comes from having developers who are just as passionate about playing their own game as they are about developing for it.

If this reward category extended beyond just steam and players on consoles could also vote- I’m pretty confident Klei would take this award home with a landslide, you can just ask the Nintendo switch players that..

It took Klei literal years to catch Ps/Xbox up to PC in updates, switch is literally one update behind in catching up to the other platforms- that there is an accomplishment in books.

So please do vote Klei to win this award :love_heart:

I can't name another game that deserves it as much as DST does! :wilson_love:

There certainly are pretty old/-ish games in multiplayer context with rather big, active player-bases still kept healthy via constant & consistent updates by their devs - games like DOTA 2, ARK, World of Tanks, Left 4 Dead 2, Dead by Daylight, Garry's Mod, CS:GO, Black Mesa, Sims 4, Red Solstice 2, TerrariaProject Zomboid to only name a few. Not to mention their frequent campaigns presented in exciting marketing manner to garner hype via paid publicity on various social media sites (DOTA, WoT, DbD as typical examples for such campaigns). Hence, yes, competition is high and DST.. kinda niche.

i wont say that they made it cuz love... xD

In the realm of speculation that also can be said about any game, DST included. Don't forget Tencent basically owns them, and we all know the controversies surrounding them - monetary interest & motivation certainly being encompassed. Plus DS at origin started as a mobile app, concept-wise, where aside very basic survival player needed to tend to a Pig Village - with classic mobile addictive mechanics.

Likewise, DST accumulated a plethora of bugs over time, perhaps not as game-breaking stringent, but still: hefty bug population persisting - I could start enumerating most prevalent ones, but to no avail anyway.

Am not throwing metaphorical manure at DST, in the end I also voted it for "Labor of Love". Just want to paint an objective portrait of its health state, player-base size and real chances at the prize in relation to other competitors.

yes, both are bussiness and yes, ds came from the idea of making digital cocaine but the topic is about labor of love and i dont is fair to compare a full game that costs less than 20€ from a company that adds quality content, gifts so many free stuff and that listens to the community (even if is for their own benefit) with a game that was release with less content than an alpha game, at the prize of 40 or 60€(cant remember) and that to have a game with a decent ammount of content you need to expend much more. Sure, both relly on few people that expend more money than most players but you can enjoy dst for many hours before buying anything while isnt the case of the sims4 (i was surprised when i downloaded that for my ex when was release, what a scam for those who bought it)

by your logic the awards shouldnt exists at all

plus the only game that fits the category from your list is project zomboid which still have the tag of early access (when that can make a lot of people think about not buying it) but they refuse to remove it until is finish what they have in mind (love to art basically) and has way more content than expensive AAA games.

edit. sorry, terraria deserves it too but already won last year and i never played WoT so i cant give an opinion about it

edit2. and for sure you are right, dst is niche and there are bigger fish competing for thee award even if they might not deserve it over dst. I even heard that elder ring was on the list when it was a game lauched few ago

Bugs aren’t what killed Ark, it was the constant rollback of servers when exploiters and glitchers decided to be jerks. No one likes feeding their entire base and renewing their land, logging off going to school or work then coming home to find out the Dino’s or land they feed and reclaimed is now dead or decayed because Devs decided to roll the damn world back to BEFORE you took care of it.

Ark isn’t a game it’s a life-time commitment, and eventually I got fed up with it and lost interest. They’re also (as of March 2023) abandoning Ark in favor of Ark 2 so they shouldn’t even be in the running for Labor of Love if they’re moving on from it.

Anyway- the sad reality is that many people outside of this forum community just don’t have any idea what all content is added into DST between its updates.

I mean SURE a newb might have heard of and played Year of the Catcoon- but how many of them know the permanent gameplay changes that came with that update? Such as Catcoon dens renewing themselves overtime if destroyed or the ability to rummage through the stumps for whatever the Catcoons have stashed there?

Other games running for this same category would have some kind of big announcement about it within the game itself- take Minecraft as an example: before you can even PLAY the game it gives you a rundown of what all the patch actually did/added.

That can potentially be a big factor as to why DS/DST has yet to win this award.

i think that works for minecraft cause they release an update every 8 months and that update has added 2 blocks that do jack and some random useless mob. It's an extremely small read for the "big stuff" of the update.

I don't think so.

Mike said it best, "To win the labor of love, shouldn't you love your labor?"

Taking a closer look at some of things that have been said here in the past, with a certain moderator saying "it's just a game" and to get over it when discussion gets too passionate. Sometimes it does feel like players can get a little more passionate about the game than the developers themselves. While heated debates are uncalled for, being told it's "just a game" does hurt. Some of us care a whole lot for this game we have poured thousands of hours into and hundreds of dollars to support it's team, maybe to some of us it's a little more than "just a game".

As well as there being fatigue amongst the development team with the current content cycle. Makes me think they're getting tired of the game but keep developing it because it makes them money. Why not take a break? The answer has actually been addressed before. It's due to fear that the game will "die" if not enough content is pushed out. Which just sounds depressing. Now add what ever Tencent asks of them on top of that.

But hopefully I'm wrong, and if they do win, they can get back on track to loving this game again.

can't give this game labor of love when klei is blatantly ignoring one part of the community continually. They just plug their ears and shut their eyes and go lalalalala, everything looks good

what?

Do they deserve to win the award?  That is debatable, but also kinda pointless b/c the biggest factor in winning isn't the passion of the developers.

Do they fit the category?  Inarguably - Yes.

I use DST as a positive example of what a company can do when they're willing to put in work without a direct line to profits.  They could have versioned DST with an annual release schedule, or even shelved it to promote other projects, but they didn't.  They did the necessary and difficult work of upgrading the game their players have already bought and paid for.  Upgrades that are significant including ocean content, farming, and the especially daunting task of refreshing every character in the game.  Any player who bought DST 8 years ago can log in today and enjoy all of this without spending even a single cent more.

Its hard for a company to align their motives with their customers because two major levers for increasing profits are to charge more and produce less.  DST defies this, putting the game's profits on the whims of their playerbase.  If they devote all of this dev time to adding new bosses, biomes, events, etc and we don't buy skins they lose out.

imo that is the love that fits this award.  They are treating DST the way it needs to be treated, as a living game that we can all continue playing together.

Sure - they don't talk to us like they used to - but lets be real here - they shouldn't.  Just look at how hot divisive issues run in the forums here.  This isn't even a competitive game yet we go 8+ pages back and forth over almost every change they make.  The split on the poll about "bug fixing" shows a clean 30/30/30 divide.  Imagine if Klei waded into that hot mess and took a side, it would be a disaster for them.  There is literally no winning there.  Their best option, the one thankfully they recognize they need to take, is to keep their own counsel.  I don't imagine they ignore threads like that, and hopefully they don't take them personally, but no - they shouldn't go wading out into that cesspool.

So yes, inarguably, they deserve to be in this category.

@gamehun20

I created this klei forum account to voice my complaints with the klei public servers and I've been ignored for a year straight. I've been led on by devs that they're going to do something but clearly that's not the case.

@dois raios

I'm not talking about that, that is an issue that can be fixed within minutes and they're just not doing it for whatever reason.

I'm talking about the fact that their servers crash frequently and reset all progress made

I've been asking for a fix for that since last December

I think, as much as people like to complain, Don't Starve Together is a game that's been getting constant monthly updates for the past several years now even though it's over half a decade old. And it does this while funded entirely by new purchases and packs of cosmetics that, by the way, can be earned entirely for free via an in-game currency that you passively gain while playing or even just OPENING the game (which is NOT the standard, games like Multiversus don't have anything like the spool system, you HAVE to pay up to $20 for a singular skin). That's kind of INSANE for a game of its age and price. It absolutely deserves something like this.

Have you seen the active player count for Multiversus lately? It has plummeted in popularity due exactly to overpriced skins and a incredibly greedy battle pass system.

Klei should be praised even though they release paid skins we can still earn them free. But even going back to Solo DS before skins were a thing: Content updates were free (even recently got an update a year or so ago to tame Beefalo in the solo game which wasn’t possible..) and the major expansion packs were 5$
