Would a AoE weapon have a place in DST.

  1. 1. AoE weapons.

Just something I thought of since it appears people are dying for more options in the game.

My reasons for adding an AoE weapon specifically is because of two things.

1. This image from the Don't Starve Together 2021 Gameplay TrailerScreenshot_20221203-201133.thumb.png.b4b584d1865cd2bcbf45fb39efb8749a.png

2. The scarcity of AoE options.

So starting with the picture Wolfgang is holding a hammer while fighting a boss with the two other characters designed with AoE options against a boss that spits out constant swarms.

The hammer doesn't actually do AoE damage, it's a worse weapon than using a spear and it's a gameplay trailer but this is a perfect opportunity to adjust things to improve gameplay overall.

It doesn't have to be the hammer it's just what caught my attention but it fits the design I envision anyways a weapon with low average dps, and less durability but meant more for weaker swarm units that can be stunlocked.

This is so it doesn't step on the toes of actual AoE specialists like Winona, Wendy, and woodie but it's highly unlikely even if the damage was spear level since

Winona's catapults stack very easily for high dps and low risk with it's offset being cost and not being portable

Abigail is still an extended part of Wendy she doesn't have a durability and acts as a follower. Ease of access and very effective.

Woodie is unorthodox his charge does well even though it's not the best thing but he has all his other benefits from his wereform.

Our AoE weaponry consists of gunpowder which has a long burn time before actually blowing up.

And the weather pain which is more useful as a tool since it's tornado is extremely unpredictable so it's damage isn't really consistent.

My suggestions involve tweaks to both the boomerang and hammer with an extra late game melee weapon that is actually viable.

If its possible tweak the boomerang to hit entities that get in the way of the throw so the way to maximize damage is to aim at the farthest target so a full durability boomerang could hit up to 10 targets in a line before breaking.

If possible tweak the hammer to have a small circle of AoE damage making it so the best way to maximize damage is to hit the middle target of a swarm it already has low durability as a weapon so it wouldn't last long either.

At most they would only be viable against bees and basic spiders that's why there should be a late game weapon introduce to actually be effective against grumbles or tougher swarms.

Edit:I forgot to mention wormwood's bramble trap and bramble husk.

One is an upgraded toothtrap which is nice since you can make a deadly field but their durability is finite so you'll have to fix that field every once in awhile.

And the husk deals a small amount of knockback AoE meaning you'll have to get hit to deal AoE damage.

2nd edit: Wolfgang dumbbell toss also has a small AoE effect it's kinda hard to predict moving targets but two dumbbells tosses is enough to kill 100 hp targets as long as the dumbbells aren't stone.

Maxwell's shadow sneak and shadow prisons are AoE but they're more for disruption/stunning than damage.

we need aoe and faster atack weapons to diversify weather-s pain job into other items with different recipes plus giving more variety to combar

moonrock hammer made with glems that is a better hammer and also has electric damage. Thor's hammer basically

boomerang can also get an upgrade in the moon crafting tab... everything that can fill that empty station is would be welcome

There should ALREADY be an AOE weapon in DST- Wickerbottoms On Tentacles spell. No one’s going to be able to change my mind in this.. the current way you cast it is terrible and it should be more like casting Maxwells Shadow Prison so I’m not standing in my own summons getting spanked.

But also.. it would be cool if Willow had her own version of Shadow Prison that cast an AoE circle of fire either around herself or enemy mobs that protected her/kept mobs afraid of fire in place for a brief time.

Yes! Though overall, DST's combat in general needs some revisting, Reap What You Sow style. This game needs a more viable arsenal of weapons, the unique ones like the Tail O' Three Cats, ranged weapons, etc, aren't used due to low damage output, being too expensive, niche, etc. The current weapons meta is getting old, everyone only uses Darkswords and Hambats in the later game. A aoe weapon could easily help spice up the combat.

The game technically has a projectile that fits this description and already has AoE. Seedshells. Those prickly balls that are spat by sea weeds. The only problem is that their damage is absolutely ludicrous. 23.8 is nothing. It won't kill even the smallest animals, and instead just stuns them. As a result, I could never find a use for them. Does anyone even remember that this is a thing in the game? It's even more ridiculous considering that when these seeds are an enemy attack, their damage is 68 and they easily turns the boat into a sieve. It just doesn't make any sense that it instantly becomes useless as soon as it gets into the player's hands. Even if we leave their flat damage as it is, I can easily see how they can be a material for crafting projectiles with higher damage. It will also give a reason to actually fight sea weeds and farm them.

They used to be bugged and deal 68 damage, same as their actual mob counterparts.

Best bug of all time, let me tell you. It's an unfortunate thing they were munted, only thing we'd lose out on and the stunning small mobs part, which I do appreciate for stuff like birds. I've also thought it'd be great if there was a way to farm seed shells from Sea Weeds besides killing them (I had jokingly thought of a hat that's basically a basket/bug net on the head and you'd just collect the seed shells the Sea Weeds shoot at you, . Would be a bit weird to add a specific hat for one specific purpose so I don't think it'd work. But

is price of summoning a raid boss killer trap

Honestly, this is a solution right here. Some sort of launcher weapon that can shoot them and therefore increases their damage. Can still throw for stunning small animals, but becomes a proper weapon when used as ammo.

Like Walter's slingshot?.. This is kinda his feature, so if you add a new weapon which is like a slingshot but for everyone and better, it will step on his territory. On the other hand, allowing seedshells to be used only by him would be somewhat limiting. I imagined them working more like darts? That is, they will work as they are working now, just with more damage if they were crafted into improved projectiles - without the strict need for a special separate weapon to shoot them. Buuuut... Maybe with Walter's slingshot they can do even more damage? Like, all characters will be able to craft stronger seeds and throw them, but if you load them as a projectile into a slingshot, it adds additional damage modifier and maybe bonus like longer AoE stun. Thus, Walter will have an additional personal advantage, which will not make the seedshells completely useless for the rest of the characters, but will give a reason to use his slingshot more often. Especially considering that he is allergic to bees, and predictably has problems with Bee Queen in particular. A stun weapon that can hit several drones at once will balance his chances and create a new strategy, potentially like high risk/reward deal (a chance to get more stung in exchange for unique and effective way to beat a boss).

Could be used to catch other things too. Like Earthquake Debris, uhhhhh

Yeah I got nothing.
