DST Cross Progression

Not so long ago, Don't Starve Together was revealed to release on the Nintendo Switch Spring 2022. This is definitely big news, we have been asking for a Nintendo Switch port for a while now, but it made me question...

Will we see Don't Starve Together support Cross Progression?
I know we all want Cross Play for DST, but Cross Progression is just as important, even for veteran players.

Don't Starve was released in April 2013 and DST was released in April 2016. The Nintendo Switch edition is joining very late into the game's life, and since it has a lot of content to catch up on, what about all our skins and DLCs we collected throughout the years?
I myself have a Steam and Playstation account, both with the DLC characters, and hundreds of skins/curios. Knowing if I purchase the Switch edition of DST, nothing's gonna carry over! All the Login Bonuses, Twitch Drops, Loyal, Timeless, Heirloom, Proof of Purchase skins, all of these are either super rare, require Klei Points, or cannot be obtained legitimately anymore. Even the Plant Registry and Cookbook won't carry over.
Spools and Klei Points build up very slowly. You can't pinpoint how many spools you get per week, since you need to take luck into account. Klei Points take months to accumulate, only for a few Twitch Drops. DLC Characters are 2,700 Spools each, so either unravel skins for a Grand Total of 10,800 Spools or pay money to play as them again. But even if you did slowly rebuild your collection, you still wouldn't be able to get your time-gated or Heirloom skins back. This could drastically reduce the port's value for me, and maybe even other players.

All I ask for in the near future, is Cross Progression.
Many of us spent years collecting these things, and transferring to the Switch could be one of the largest pain if we aren't able to keep our belongings. If Cross Progression was added, it would be a blessing to finally play Don't Starve Together on the go with everything I have built up to this point. But as of right now, DST Nintendo Switch edition is going to be pretty hard for me to pick up if there's no Cross Progression.

I should probably mention: Cross-play and Cross-Progression are NOT the same thing.
Cross-Play is players playing together across different platforms. Cross-Progression is the player accessing their inventory/progress across different platforms they own.
I'm already seeing some people confuse this discussion as a Cross-Play topic, which it isn't.

good idea, but i think it will be impossible with mods cuz consoles doesn't support them

I like this idea, not sure how feasible it is because it would require approval from sony, microsoft, and nintendo, aswell as steam i think to pass. Sadly some of those companies are quite hard on things like this in the past, one thing i wonder if it passes will all spools and cosmetics merge between platforms?

nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are well known for how greddy and abusive are with their costumers so, i dont know how works the skin system so i dont know if they take a % of the money when you buy (i guess so), i dont believe they will allow that. They want you to waste money on them

Yea they do take a cut of it, last i checked the usual amount is 30% from sony and microsoft. They have been a little more open then in the past,especially microsoft so heres hoping. But it's most likely gonna be a all or nothing situation, where they need all three to agree before they go through with it at all.

Klei looked to answer the question after the Switch announcement yesterday so here's how it is :

"It's something we keep an eye on, but unless things change in that space we've looked into it and it's currently not realistic for us to do especially while sustaining regular content updates like we've been doing." - source

I believe it's safe to say the situation hasn't moved much since but it is certainly justified by the complexity of the various challenges making the game completely cross-platform would be.

However if that helps, I would be personally happy if Klei try to lunch a cross-play beta to experiment the feasibility of the thing while isolating as much issues as possible, like skins or mods, and many more I wouldn't think about in the first place. But so if what's left are engine technical changes which could be probably easier tweaks I think it would be already one big step to allow everyone playing together, what's optional could be reintroduced later on when it's solved. That would be just great, I got 2 friends that were completely clueless they couldn't play with me and others after getting DST on consoles. Now I do make sure I mention it before they get the game but still the fact that the game doesn't have cross-play isn't mentioned enough to prevent this, just a little note aside. So that's something that would benefit the community a lot. Regardless on how complete it is I'd be happy to play with friends on Xbox & PS without the use of skins or mods.

Honestly getting the approval from all these large companies is such a shot in the dark. If Klei really wanted to, they would have to design a system on their own end which could generate like unique codes for each skin a player already has unlocked, which will work one time for each platform. And that seems like a ton of work to do, when the alternative is... just make more money.

Sorry I'm out of the loop, but what is "Cross Progression"?

I don't have Klei accounts on platforms other than Steam so I have no first-hand experience, but I thought account merging has been a thing for years now - I thought this merged your acounts' skin inventories, what else would it do?

It sadly does not link progress from consoles to PC. I really don't know what it merges between the two the only thing i could think of is klei points

I play on PC and ps4 and can confirm linking your account doesn't share items. I think it only shares klei points.

Well that's a bummer.. I hope at least watching twitch streams gives the streaming drops to both accounts?

Seeing cross-progression would be nice for people who'd like their otherwise unobtainable skins to carry over to other consoles. (Lookin at you, Loyal, Timeless, and Proof of Purchase rarities) I know skins we collect are recorded on our Klei accounts, so would it be in the realm of possibility for accounts connected on different platforms to carry their inventory over through their one Klei account?

And I know it'd be next to impossible for PC due to the existence of mods, but crossplay between consoles would also be a nice addition for PS, Xbox, and maybe even Switch players to starve together.
