I remember read that was a coincidence that the very first character start with W and then they decide to keep on it for every character

The first few characters started with a W and they decided it would just be a thing from now on. Imo it's a pretty endearing detail about the series as a whole.

 

 

Also, Maxwell is named Waxwell in the files.

I thought it was because maxwell was suppose to be the antagonist of the game so they reversed W to M;

It’s set to W for Wumbo.

Maxwell was the antagonist in the first Don't Starve games and in the first act of the plot / lore.

In the single-player DS games he's the last character you can unlock. So for a long time he is the villain, rather than part of the cast.

It's like in Nintendo's Mario games, where Wario is Mario's antagonist, also playing on the M/W inversion.

His real name is William. In the lore his real name is William. The game just says his name is maxwell

i like that one theory video someone once did where the reason why everyone's names start with W is because W is close to a symbol in the ancient's alphabet that is symbolic towards like...sitting on the throne or monarch-type things. Or something like that.
