What about hated characters?

Recommended Posts

I hate the celestial portal.  It leaves me in a constant state of indecision.  Do I pick characters based on their perks, swapping as needed to achieve the optimum play through?  Then hate myself for using all these OP advantages when I should have just been playing Wes the entire time?

T_T  Celestial portal has no heart or soul T_T

I (in my opinion) don't really like playing Wolfgang. Sure his strength is nice for fighting, but I feel being spoiled with (what could roughly equate to) essentially 50% shorter fights can start a bad habit when I switch to another character like Wormwood that doesn't have such a benefit. Secondly, I just don't really find him an interesting character in general both in terms of playstyle or personality what with his "Strong and Dumb Brute" demeanor, and his straight stat increase quirks of which affect only his appearance and particular benefits. Lastly, it does get annoying (in my opinion of course) that most guides, speedruns, and boss-guides revolve around Wolfgang near exclusively, and he has become a meta character as a result.

This is just my two cents, so be sure to take it with a grain of salt as well.

I find Wickerbottom pretty boring to play. Kind of a shame given she tends to have some of the best skins in the game.

I also find something incredibly off-putting about Woodie, although I can't actually articulate why. Something about his personality I guess.

I just hate Wortox's whole deal.  He's probably the most overpowered character across both Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together.  Low health?  Drop some souls.  Low hunger?  Eat some souls.  The only problem I can really think of is sanity.  I also hate him because he isn't human.  Along with Wurt.

I also don't like Wigfrid because if anyone plays her you have to put in constant effort to hunt which is a hassle.

And Wes.  Because his players are probably the most toxic people I've ever met.  And people who play him take themselves so seriously.

And I dislike Winona because her Tinkering tab is useless.  The generators are just space wasters,  The catapults are useless, I guess the spotlights can be useful but in very specific situations,  and I guess the tape is useful since it can repair things.  I just would prefer Wagstaff in the game because his Tinkering tab is much better.  But I guess it only benefits him with the glasses?  But the Telepad and Telebrella would be much more useful than a weak catapult.

its stupid that he can jump and heal and also 200hp. For buffing characters(even balanced ones) there is a lot of topics but i dont see any for imb4s

Wurt is a vegetarian with no farming, gathering, or cooking synergy.

Most vegetarian crockpot dishes are awful.

Shes a base builder with 2 different fighting merms, and the king, which is all she really gets.

Shes a child who can amass allied merms but she can fight and gather perfectly well on her own.

She is a mashup of too many different things, none of them fleshed out, and none of them synergize.

If you ask me, she should work slower and be weaker in fights, which makes her rely on her merms more.

She should be able to construct gathering, fishing, and farming merm houses, and special swamp farms, which let her have more synergy with her vegetarianism, and create a sort of RTS economy with herself and the Merm King.

If you could create and stock manure piles and seed boxes, where merms would busy themselves growing crops while you tend to other matters, and you had to gather parties of merms (who could be gained theough the fish a fisher merm would collect) to get over a fighting/gathering downside, I think that would create an incredibly unique and rewarding style of gameplay.

Some new vegetarian crockpot dishes would be nice (especially with the newer garlic/potato/etc crops).

But instead her only real downside is being a vegetarian, but she has no interesting interactions with that, she can accomplish everything just the same as any other survivor, her base building is lackluster, and merms are just boss killers, and dont really need to be relied on.

Best part about my idea is that its not all that hard to do, it would take some time and testing, but I could accomplish all those things as a modder.

Devs, please, read this ;-;

For me, it's Wolfgang and WX-78, they're just pretty boring to me. If anyone else enjoys playing them that's perfectly fine, they're just not for me. I don't like relying on random occurrences (Lightning strikes and tumbleweed gears for WX-78) and Wolfgang is just very simplistic, eat, annihilate, repeat with no downsides. :nightmare:

To be more clear I don't like how they are creatures compared to everyone else being human.  I feel like it's pandering to a certain group in the Don't Starve community.

well in the ruins there is tons of gears+ marble statues in full moon and lighting strikes can be induce by telelocator staff

Yeah, I suppose I'm just lazy, cause I don't want to go down into the ruins every time I play WX-78. That's probably why I dislike their character, it's either ask to eat gears, find some in a tumbleweed, or rush the ruins. :apthy:

I'm probably not in the position to give a rework idea since I don't main WX, but I just don't like the idea of ruins or bust.

You can build a Telelocator Staff/Focus and charge up on demand, though even as a WX main I don't do it much. The "Charged Up" effect doesn't last long enough for me to justify any amount of work to achieve this state, and getting used to being slower again is painful. I mainly use it late game when i'm drowning in gems and there aren't as many pressing matters to attend to.

Also i'm never in a rush at all to obtain Gears for consumption. The extra stats are nice, but it takes that much more work to maintain them. I think something like 10 cooked Green Mushrooms will raise my sanity from 0 to maybe like 75%-80% when i've maxed my stats. Don't get me wrong, I always end up doing it, but never before 500 days.

Anyway, I would have to say my least favorite character (that i've seriously tried) is Wolfgang. The constant animation lock ups as he transfers between states are obnoxious. I'm sure I would learn to deal with it if I kept playing as him, but he just doesn't interest me whatsoever.

I'm also beginning to get bored of my old main Wormwood.  Especially since he hasn't gotten a single skin since his introduction to the game.  While Winona has gotten a skin during every single event.

I make these my words. I really REALLY want that people at Klei read this, for real

I do not fully hate any character... But the 2 that I dislike to some extent:

  • Winona. I love/hate her. She is a character whose art design fits her lore and theme, but that her gameplay design is divorced from them. She is a handywoman and factory worker, but her playstyle is closer to an inventor (a mediocre one); and her trusty "tape" somehow fixes clothing but nothing else (something we can already fix with little problem); the only thing fitting her handywoman aspect is the faster-crafting. But I also dislike how stupidly important she became to the story: she knows Wagstaff and Maxwell, and is Charlie's sister, at first it made sense because she worked for Wagstaff, and Charlie mentioned Maxwell (plus they were famous); but then in her short we discover she worked for Wagstaff because she knew his factory was connected to her sister's disappearance (somehow?), more importantly, she indirectly knew Wendy, Woodie, Wickerbottom, and even had WX-78 prototype schematics through some detective investigation (were did this come again?). I still love her personality and dad jokes though. TL; DR: I love her personality and initial concept, I hated the overall execution of it all.
  • Wendy. I really don't like her personality, but I can say that about many other characters. What I dislike the most of her is her re-work and how incomplete it feels. I am fine she remained mostly the same but a bit stronger; but what disappointed me was that ghosts are not aggressive towards her. And that's it. It was a chance to make this mobs worth something for at least 1 character, but nope they are as useless as ever if not more. To add salt to injury, her ghostly elixirs are mostly pointless since one of them (spectral cure-all) is so damn OP the rest are just "useless" in comparison for the most part, and there is even 1 that is not worth the effort in the slightest (nightshade nostrum). TL; DR: Her personality is obnoxious, and her re-work was a missed opportunity and somewhat broken.

I never ever want to play as Wilbur because he combines the no-useful-dialogue thing I don't like about playing Wes with potty humour as far as the eye can see, and the only thing that differentiates him from any other monkey in terms of characterization is the royalty thing which is never elaborated upon in any way. Presumably he's trained or something, since he wears a shirt. Being the king of the monkeys isn't even that useful, since it doesn't work on spider monkeys or Splumonkeys, and in Shipwrecked itself Prime Apes are only mildly useful as followers and more of a minor annoyance than a serious obstacle to everybody else.

I used to dislike playing Willow before her rework, and I still don't care for her drawbacks in singleplayer, but nowadays she's fine and the only reason I don't play her more often is that I have other characters I prefer. I still don't really enjoy playing Wurt, Warly's DST drawback is so punishing in the chaos of a public server that I basically never play him, and I don't care for the way Winona's fast-crafting perk was rebalanced. I like all of them in terms of personality, though.

I do wish people would accept that Warbucks is never coming back in an official capacity and stop trying to persuade Klei to do otherwise, although I'm concerned that being the first one to bring him up in this thread will cause an influx of exactly that. His perks are almost entirely outshined by Maxwell and Wickerbottom within Hamlet and useless outside of it, his drawback isn't particularly unique either since Warly already had something similar, his sprite looks like an elderly Wilson dipped in orangey-pink paint and sticks out in a bad way next to the other human Don't Starve characters (especially Woodlegs, the other old white guy with a suntan), the color being even more of a jarring break from the established style when you're looking at it through Hamlet's pink-tinted colorcubes, and the only other things he has going on are his polarising characterization and his cool battlecry tune. And it's not as if he's been lost forever to people who didn't play as him when he was officially available, either; he's unlockable with a console command, including for people like me who didn't participate in the beta, and his dialogue file even has quotes for stuff added after he was retired. He's honestly way more interesting as a 'secret' or 'ghost' character than he ever was when he was on the official roster.

I hate webber. For me the hate dosen't come from his playstyle, but just from the amount of webber noobs and or trolls that come into my world(or publics even) and plant random spider nests. So webber takes the spot for me no question.

That being said, i very rarely play Webber, Wilson or Willow. Wendy did come out of that category after the refresh, i quite enjoy her now.
