GDK
Here is question: Will there be achievement in the final game ?I know with steam it is easily possible to make steam achievements, but I am wondering if there will be an internal system too (mostly for the chrome version actually) ? Developer Kevin Posted November 7, 2012 Developer Share Posted November 7, 2012 I tend to dislike achievements from a design perspective, as I mentioned in this article: http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/intrinsic-vs.-extrinsic-rewards-in-kleis-latest-game-dont-starveWe haven't made a final decision one way or another yet, though. GDK
Thanks for the answer. But i thought that rewarding surviving XX days by an achiement would like be a good insentive to survive the longest possible and not change worlds every time. 501105
I am for steam/chrome achievements, each player can decide for himself (or herself) wether to participate in them and they can add some extra gameplay in trying to get them all.
DarkJedi
How bout secret Achievements for really cool, hard to do stuff? You wont know about the achievements till you pull it off,and its wont make you grind like normal achievements.
Bogpad
How bout secret Achievements for really cool, hard to do stuff? You wont know about the achievements till you pull it off,and its wont make you grind like normal achievements.well, that would work to the moment the first person gets the achievment and posts it in the internet, and from there on, everyone would grind for it the same as if it was an "official" achievment. I don't think that this will work at all, not in times of the internet.

Cellusious
i tend to stray away from anchivments, they're in there to make a game less fun and more for the shiny.//gameDesignerTalkoh :3I tend to dislike achievements from a design perspective, as I mentioned in this article: http://penny-arcade.com/report/editorial-article/intrinsic-vs.-extrinsic-rewards-in-kleis-latest-game-dont-starveWe haven't made a final decision one way or another yet, though.great minds think the same, doesn't they //just that i'm not that great, just a critique hell.EDIT:http://kotaku.com/5958758/the-real-reason-we-hate-easy-achievementsreplace "Easy anchivements" with all anchivements made. 501105
Interesting article and very true, achievements have to be atleast mildly challenging to give a feeling of worth.
PhelsarusBeel
Realy intresting articel and it speaks so much true with the achievement stuff in modern games you most the time just get a basic goal like go from point a to point b and slay X number of enemy Y. for me this stuff is boring i mean i love RPG like Skyrim but i enjoy the game far more when i can just go and explore and set my own goals and this is a thing don't starve do right i mean every night when i stand on my fire i already making plans what to do on the next day like go to a pig town and gather some gold or manure for my sience machine or farms what gives me some sort of goal to do and i get encourage to make more plans to geather the right stuff like one day just go hunt down bunnys for food or go chop down trees for wood this kinda self made goals are missing from most modern games. But i mean some small stuff would be cool so i get encourage to take risks or go exploring even further then i got for now i mean not just so simple stuff like slay 100 spiders thats boring but stuff like got all blueprints for crafting or so because this again would encourage me to make something completly wierd to achieve a goal like kill your self on a total redicoulus way or so i mean this game didnt need them but achievements can help to understand the basic stuff but again not so generic stuff like survive X days thats boring and dull and i dont want something like this in games i mean i played a lot of Xbox 360 games and even when there are achievements i dont care about them because i want to enjoy the game and not rage about it because i couldnt beat part X without taking no damage whats so ever.To make it short Achievements can be good when done right and encourage a player to take a risk or change something in their playstyle and with getting an achievement they feel like i have done something awesome on the other hand achievements can destroy a game because it destroy the meaning of the game like the survive X days that where mentioned in the articel because most players will just build a basic camp near a lot of bunnys and grass to fuel the fire and hunt bunnys (also some berry bushes) what would make it boring to me because for me dont starve is al about the adventure and even the sometimes evil ways of dieing (i take it in the old Dwarf fortress way where losing is fun)
Excess
The only game that I play that have great achievements is Faster than Light. It is a rather hard game, I've played it like 30 times and only won once, on Easy. The achievements are as hard as the game, because they fundamentally limit your gameplay, thus making the game even harder. You get an achievement like once every five gameplays if you actively look for them and have already unlocked all the ships previously so you can choose which one fits better for the task. They are unobtrusive and don't distract you from the games goal, which is really, really hard to get.I've already suggested achievements for Don't Starve, and my first suggestion was both difficult to obtain and obscure. But the achievements on this game would be better if they where a surprise, rather than a TO-DO list, and people looking them up on internet would completely ruin the experience. 501105
The only way I can imagine to have achievements that you cant look up is to have them be affected by something random in the game. Otherwise wether it is tricky or not, there will be guides to explain what you should do step for step.
PhelsarusBeel
Maybe some cryptic stuff like in the binding of isaac half of the achievement descriptions are totaly cryptic i mean there is no stuff like destroy stuff X so many times most of the stuff i unlocked by pure luck this would be a good idea but then they still should be a little bit crytic so nobody can just go around and post "hey to get achievement X in don't stave just do Y" because this would be dumb

I got them all but the flame one because it's hard. But i admit the achiement system is good in that game (aspecially when it enable layout unlocking). BritishRenegade
I think that it would be good for an unlockable system. Like so "Defeat 30 Beefalos" and you are rewarded with a hunters outfit or "Kill 1,000,000 overall hostiles" and be rewarded with the character "Mega-Wilson" etcetera. This would make players have an objective if they want it because it is not being forced at them and it gives them sonething to work for.
PhelsarusBeel
When i was at work today i got a realy wierd but perhaps also unique idea with quest for don't starve how about the feature that players can make their own quest like you can write a note in wilsons noticebook and this will show up on the top screen you now think thats just a reminder but now let me get this idea further how about when you complete your selfmade task you get a small jingle like in most games when you complete a quest and get some sience points or more if your task was realy hard to accomplish like you get just 10 points for an task like cut down 20 grass what would be an realy easy task and on the other hand you get like 100 points for a task like collect 32 monstermeat what would be more difficult again its a wierd idea dont know how i got it but it would be a unique feature because so far i never found a game that would let you make your own quest also with the small rewarding system players would keep making harder task to get more science points what would help at the start and maybe lategame if there will be even more expensive items like for 2000 points its just an idea but it may would work with a game like this
janvier1985
sins this is a beta and open for suggestions, i can make a script where players (members) can make achievementsand list them all on 1 page, the idea is to have members make achievements (possible or not) and IF the creators are willing to create achievements system into "Dont Starve" game, they can just look at this list and copy themnow i need some kind of permission from the owners to make this system, i can code it myself, and host it Content will be copyrighted to kleientertainment.com ofc let me know

Royal
I don't think you'd need any kind of legal backup, make it as a simple suggestion and then hopefully if they need achievements they pull them from your list.

Kytin
For a game as open ended as Don't Starve achievements can be useful in my opinion. The devs have already stated that they are happy with the initial learning curve of the game where the player is just fumbling around and learning the basics, but even so there are things that are very useful to know that the game does not teach you. For example, there is a trick to being able to kill rabits with just an axe/spear/some other tool. Unless the player reads about it on the forums (as I did), there is a very good chance they will never learn how to do this as they may assume it is impossible and simply not try. However, if the game has an achievement along the lines of "Kill 20 rabbits with an axe" then they will know that it is in fact possible and look for a way to do it. NeedPants
I personally dislike achievements. When they are there i usually want to get them, and then i find things that are annoying to me in the game, that i wouldnt ahve noticed otherwise. Not sure if this will happen in dont starve, but id rather not risk it
