Lwt
Newcomer here. I have a question regarding the cool steam vent. After calculating the output using Oni Assistant I get 106.701kg water per activity cycle (which in this case is 122.9 cycles). This is only enough water to sustain 1.4 electrolyzers running nonstop. Unless I'm doing something wrong this is a little underwhelming. Have I missed something? Saturnus
It's about right for an average cool steam vent. SackMaggie
Look for water geyser/polluted water geyser/salt water those give you about double amount, While cool slush geyser will give you the same amount as cool steam vent but with much lower temp. Lwt
I just ran into a polluted water vent. Wow, just wow. bobucles
The cool steam vent is a first generation geyser, when geysers were first being added into the game. They started out as extremely tiny renewable resources that had to be carefully rationed. Feedback demanded more and more resources, so even more water geysers with superior output got added in. Sadly there isn't much unique stuff you can do with a steam geyser, and it's probably worth skipping in favor of other types. It can be pumped out for steam rocket fuel, but that's easier said than done. It's pretty tricky to keep the steam hot enough when it's going through cold pipes. Well, it's annoying but I did it several times using only Igneous Rock. As steam rockets and their setups are the most temporary and disposable I just use the cheapest stuff and deal with needed repairs until rocket is ready. They heat up extremely fast. I used oxygen as pre-heater, when all pipe segments were above 100C, then steam was let in. Heat source was just some hot obsidian patch. Either hot Boulder or some artefact from Volcanoes trait. SkunkMaster
i usually just pump water through the space roof at 1kg/s, then let it out in a room with 2 air pumps.. Unless I'm doing something wrong this is a little underwhelming. Have I missed something? So.. you get free water and whine about it? Ok millenial! Anyway, while it might not be the most useful geyser mass-wise, it is still free resource. Stop whining about it. My cool steam-vent usually looks like this : Thought process being that, if I heat it 15 degrees, I get electricity + cool it down 30 degrees Much better than if I cool it 15 down degrees right away. I have some automation to get out excess "steam" (by then water) out of the system. Not all cool steam vent are (optimally) good candidate for this pattern. This one if producing 4kg steam/s, (so 2 generators worth). In the same game, I have one at 12kg steam/s which wouldn't exactly work out for this setup. Yeah, sure, cool steam vent don't give as much water as, lets say, polluted water vent. But it gives way more heat., which is, in the right circumstances, a useful, "tap-able" resource. Now, whether you find extra power more useful than extra water is a matter of taste and, probably, circumstances. Quote This is only enough water to sustain 1.4 electrolyzers running nonstop. What is your point here? According to you, how many electrolyzer should a cool steam vent sustain? In term of oxygen generation, this vent can sustain pretty close to 13 dupes all by itself. Not bad I'd say. meepmoop
sounds about right. 1.4 electrolyzers. polluted gysters, salt water, regular water gysters all bring twice as much as the cool steam vents. I like using gysters more. Prefer the water gyster or polluted/infections water. If I dont get either... yea i go for 2 cool vents. I currently run 4 dupe colony so I dont need more then 1 even. Frequently, one of these is reasonably close to your starting base, making it a much simpler process to provide air for your dupes. There are other geysers around that can provide other resources for your dupes, including higher concentrations of water. If you want to pick your geysers, you can try using Tools Not Included to generate a seed number that you can use when generating your world. It's hard to keep up with the supply of the polluted water geyser. It's definitely a huge step-up from the pitiful steam vent.
