Walani, and why she's perfect for Return of Them

Here's a line from the Original post.

I get that Woodie is a bit OP but it still has some downsides, you have to get the resources to make it, and you are starving when you return to normal form, and you cant do anything while travelling. Walani would be amazing at travelling back and forth between anywhere. If Walani is implemented they have to add more setbacks. (Also I haven't actually ever played as Walani so I don't know her current setbacks)

Keep in mind that Woodie also has other uses, including great resource gathering and combat potential.

Woodie is a generalist, Walani can be a specialist, in regards to the ocean.

An then what? Even if klei introduces a lot of sea content (and ****s on their own dst boats introducing walani and surfboard) then what? She only has sea scoutting perk and dry quick. How will the surfboard help walani to survive? I dont see her op and neither interesting for dst ( i enjoy a lot playing her in SW)

The main thing about Walani surf is that It's used to ride waves. But there are no weather waves in DST. So even surf is board (the only unique thing of Walani) is kinda lucklaster for DST port.

Walani will need some big refresh to be interesting.

Here's an idea: What if Walani could craft an item that makes waves for her to ride? (My initial thought was that it could double as a weapon if you target a mob instead of empty ocean, but if it's any good as a ranged weapon then using it to propel yourself would seem wasteful, and that defeats the purpose.)

or just dont bring her to dst. SW its about ocean so it has a unique character with ocean perks and for dst a character with perk that fit in constance

i think klei just bring us warly and wormwood to dst because their perks are not conditioning by SW, their perks fits in every gamemode so i dont expect klei bring us wilbur, walani, woodlegs or wheeler and im happy with that, i like having a reason to play single player and i want original stuff in dst

Also i think for the business part its better. They need to catch players attencion so if they waste resources and time on reworking an old character that has no sense in dst somepeople that doesnt play daily will see the update and think "oh a new update! i will check it, oh its just that character that i have already played" instead of "omg they add a merm girl i wanna see that working"

The thing I’ve been trying to explain and absolutely no one seems to want to listen to is that there aren’t any waves in Shipwrecked Either...

Wait before you reply with a Confused React.

There is the Regular normal Peaceful Calm Sea areas in Shipwrecked, and THEN there is the DEEP SEA (Where all the Waves & hostile water enemy mobs that want you dead will spawn)

CURRENTLY DST’s Sea is all Normal Calm Sea and there IS no Deep Sea.

The Deep Sea is even a different color from the Calm Sea... so it’s super easy to tell when you’ve went into less peaceful waters.

I don't see how your point conflicts with mine.

No I am not assuming that they will add old Sea mechanics just to include Walani, I am Assuming that they wouldn’t add a Boat Cookie platform with enough room to move around on top of and dodge hostile water mobs... into the game and an exploreable ocean if it’s just going to remain to be a calm and peaceful fishing trip.

Its got less to do with Adding Waves and Deep Sea just for including Walani.. and more to do with fleshing out the ocean so it isn’t flat & peaceful all the time.

The Boat Cookie even has its own HEALTH Bar and can be fixed using Boat Patches And Winona Duct Tape... Obviously there WILL be a Deep Sea at some point based on that observation alone.

i hope that but we dont know what will include that updates

also boats can be repaired with just twigs (healing the boat, not the holes) and you do this because there is cookie cutters, malbatros and narwhales, also rocks to impact

Why? Could you explain?

I don't think weather waves will Suit DST ocean, because, boat simply can not dodge them.

Yes but do Gnarwail waves created by   Gnarwail horn or Malabatross waves ever actually Harm the boat? Both of those mobs already use Ocean Waves...

So you can’t just look at Waves as being impossible, they are already in the game to a limited Degree during the above mentioned fights.

And Maybe your not Supposed to steer clear of them.... maybe they simply rush over the surface of your boat Cookie and you need to move out of the way to avoid being washed off the side?

Just because the boat is big and slow doesn’t mean Waves won’t ever be added.. they’ll simply be added in a different way.

As for the Boat having a Health Bar and can be repaired with boat patches & Winona Duct Tape, There will Obviously at some point be hostile enemy mobs in the ocean of DST.

Currently you have DST Calm Sea’s, But there will no doubt be a Deep Sea at some point. Otherwise Boats wouldnt have multiple means of having damage repaired.

TL:DR- Hitting a Wave doesn’t harm your boat. You (the player not the boat) just need to move out of the way of its path.

Waves are absolutely possible, and in fact I anticipate them being added at some point. It won't be in the same quantity as SW ocean, but waves could be just the thing to counter boat bridges, requiring you to either make an anchor for each boat, or deal with going to and from on a boat (the intended way). Im not saying I hate boats, but that's a possibility.

Yall are saying that we'll have to port SW mechanics just for a single character, which is simply wrong. Waves are already in DST, they just have to have their spawn be made natural and more frequent.

As for Walani being the only character with a one-man boat, why and how is this a problem? People saying that "Klei don't want to port SW boats" in regards to her is just silly. Her surfboard is meant for herself, unless Klei wants to make it usable by others. It doesn't require much work to make the surfboard and certainly doesn't require you to port mechanics from SP, it'd essentially just be walking on water with new animations.

Exactly! And once waves are added to the game, Walani can benefit from surfing on them.

I don’t see the Larger Slower Moving Boat Cookie as having an Issue with Waves because as I had mentioned in another thread- Waves moving TOWARDS the boat can hit the boat and wash over the top of its surface, it won’t harm or damage the boat.. but the waves force could potentially wash players off the boat, so you (the player not the Boat) will need to move out of its oncoming path.

Waves moving AWAY from the boat can be hit by the boat and consumed as a Small Speed Boost.

Obviously for Walani this boost would be much more effective on a surfboard as opposed to a enormous wooden circular boat, but uhh #Logic I guess?

I forgot to Mention the most important part about that whole post above- You CAN actually play Single Player Don’t Starve As WALANI in a Reign Of Giants Save Without an Ocean at all.

(Hilariously she still spawns with her Surfboard though I believe it to be totally useless outside of SW)

So I must ask all the Walani critics out there who say we need a much more fleshed out ocean in DST before she can be added..  Why???

If you do not like Walani simply for whatever reason that is fine & you are entitled to your opinion of Walani dislike, but SOME of Us may actually WANT to play as her in DST.. and honestly? She would be no worse than Pre-Rework Wilson or Wes.

Like.. seriously, come on guys think about it!

Okay, no.

While im practically the #1 advocate for Walani in DST, it is not a good idea to just port her as-is because "she can be played in RoG". Walani in RoG (and Hamlet) is boring to play. She is essentially just Wilson with more downsides. I would rather have Klei take the time to give Walani worthwhile and interesting perks than to simply port Walani and take the crown for the worst character in the game.

All the DST ocean needs to accommodate for Walani is waves, which are already implemented.

I think you missed the point.

Have you seen the Wendy Refresh post earlier? As a Wendy main She’s sounds absolutely Awesome <3 and I have yet to be completely disappointed with any single character Rework yet!

The Point was Reasons Why Walani should NOT be added should not be

1-Unfinished Ocean Content.

2- Boring Uninteresting Character to play as.

3- No Waves to Surf On.

Its not up to any of us to come up with ideas on how to flesh out or Rework Walani.. that’s Klei’s job.

And as such- We can only list reasons why we would like to have her brought to the game. The rest is entirely up to Klei Entertainment.

I thought of a new land perk for Walani (beside towels) what if she can craft a cooler that can turn certain non-crockpot fruits/veggies into something like Aloe vera ice cubes, which in real-life treats sun-burns + high health benefits; Don't starve Ice can be useful for high sanity + health crockpot dishes and anti-summer gear

Playing Shipwrecked earlier I noticed a structure I could craft that let me set up my own (shady areas) to avoid intense heat.

Currently in DST it’s not needed due to massive forests of trees to take refugee in. But... when you look at those sandy beach Biomes on Lunar Island with Dead prehistoric fish there’s no forest of trees over there.

And I can imagine that more biomes will be added to the game over the course of 2020 & 2021.. so there may become a point that those seemingly useless structures would actually be helpful while running around on an island with not that many tree’s to take cover under.

Walani being the only one who can craft the Palm leaf tree hut would give her at least something as useful as Winona’s Spotlight.

Ice-bergies (sea-turtles with ice-Capps on there shells) there health/defence is similar to rock lobsters, they follow Walani due to chillness

Ice-bergies sneeze every 30 secs mobs getting hit once has a 50% chance to half there speed and has the same effect as a ice-staff blasts

(can spawn a maximum of 3, as for crafting not sure maybe 3 salt, 2 gold and 1 blue gem)

(no direct dmg to mobs, low aggro, the can swim, speed of 4 but doubled if Walani is too far away)

+ Surfboards, 20% dryness (only Walani can surf)

White Hand towels ~ wash 15 points of wetness, passively dry 2 random inventory boxes every 30 secs, 10 uses

Spring Teal towel turf ~ 6 sanity per/min, 30% water resistance (towel turf only works when standing on it)

Summer Peach towel turf ~ slows the spread of fires, -90 cooling affect (all towels are waterproof)

+/- passive sanity effects are -50% then others (can hold dark sword 2x longer, but needs tam hat 2x longer)

- hunger drain is 20%

* sleeping positive effects are 70% (which is 20% for sanity and 70% for health)

* Immunity to grogginess

Immunity to grogginess could be an alright niche. She can't be tired if she's already tired.

I don't understand the "70%" thing. Do you mean that she gains LESS stats from sleeping? If anything, shouldn't it be the other way around?

Well I can’t speak for PC players since they’re into all their stats and numbers and all that fancy stuff- but I can say that console players have no idea what the stats and traits of the characters they’re playing are.

how am I supposed to know Wendy’s damage is weaker than (Insert Whoever Here?) without direct Damage numbers popping up off the enemies I’m Attacking, or without a MOD that tells me this information or Wikipedia page I’m NOT going to know that knowledge.

And that’s the largest differences between PC players and Console players.. We can careless how “Bland” Walani is.

if they ported her into DST with minimal to no changes at all from SW I don’t think anyone playing consoles going to notice or even care they’ll just be happy she’s in the game.

For those on PC who DO Care about all those stats and numbers... you’ve always got mods you can fall back on if she Makes it into the game & doesn’t play to your liking.

So- TL:DR I’m tired of trying to come up with special perks and reasons as to WHY Walani should be in the game.. it’s not my job to do that, I simply want to play as her, Isn’t that reason enough? :(
