Wurt planned to have darkvision...?

Recommended Posts

Her quotes to the lantern: "POOR SCALE-LESS CAN'T SEE IN DARK" ant when the torch extinguishes: "CAN STILL SEE" provides sufficient evidence that Wurt as a merm should be able to see in the dark (merms have darkvision). But I think that if this feature is implemented in some way or another it would be game breaking... if no please tell us how darkvision would be balanced.

By the way, why does Charlie try to kill Wurt (and Wortox and Wormwood or Wilba) as she is just a merm ? She don't kill other Merms (or a Krampus, living plant, pigs) ...

probably because they help the other survivors.

or maybe she only attacks clever creatures?

Spoiler

but thats probably not the reason, because she attacks Wolfgang too

I think its because all of the constant creatures are asleep (a majority at least)and thus they can't attack her because they don't see the darkness. Its not night that causes Charlie to wake up, its the survivors seeing the darkness that provokes her.

Interesting theory, but explain Wicker, shes always got her eyes closed.

She got reverse eyes. Her eyes open when shes sleeping and close whem she is awake. It that or she just has asian eyes, where the eyelids are so close together they seem connected.

Fishes cannot see without light. But they have an organ called neuromasts. With that they can touch the surroundings ike pressure differences and water movement - they "see". With that they can sense objects in dark water/night and don't accidentely bumb into something. You might heard of sharks whose can sense the electromagnetic field of the earth. That's my theory about Wurt's quotes. However, she isn't in water. Make your own conclusions, maybe Merms are adapted their senses on land.

She is just insomniac and is close to slumber everytime and when she finally falls asleep...

Spoiler

You see ungodly horror that is her eyes trying to stay awake

Or maybe she attack them 'cause they're like half human. Wortox look like to have an empathie for living creatures (he don't like eating souls), Wormwood is Half human/half plant, and Wurt has horns, she is ot like other merms. And Wiba... well, forget it. I have no idea.

Maybe all the creatures Charlie attacks are creatures that aren't living the same way other creatures of their species live. Wortox is supposed to be evil/malicious (like Krampus, I think), Wurt isn't supposed to try to learn more about the Survivors, Wilba's supposed to just live in the cities of her people, Wormwood is probably something Charlie doesn't want to exist, you get the idea. She wants things to be a certain way, and these creatures are being a problem.

About Wurt's ability to see in the dark... Her Charlie warning quote does say that she thinks she saw "the night lady". I doubt anyone can see anything in pitch-black darkness without some form of night vision. It could be interpreted that Charlie just likes the darkness better, but then it wouldn't make sense for the Moggles (or Woodie's Wereforms) to work the way they do.

I think Hamlet pigs are also affected by Charlie!! They are very afraid of the dark and sleep indoors every night, as well as light the streets. :D

That may be true, but with some game mechanics here and there you can prove that Hamlet pigs staying awake in the darkness don't get attacked by Charlie. I'm not sure how much game mechanics play into the lore, but there's that.

By my theory, Hamlet pigs wouldn't be affected by Charlie because they're living in their own cities, as they should. Wilba wants to adventure & explore, which Charlie doesn't like.

I wouldn't consider that canon - You really have to go out of your way to achieve it, to an unreasonable extent. But maybe. :D:D

You can attack & chase a homeless Hamlet pig in the darkness (while wearing Moggles to stop Charlie from attacking you) to see that they aren't attacked by her. But I think the fun of making theories is that we can have our own interpretations. Especially in games like Don't Starve, where the lore is very vague and the game mechanics can cause conflicts because of how much potential they have.

It's weird, because Merms get around in the night and seem to prefer 'not day'...presumably they can see in the dark.
Wurt herself straight up says that she can see in the dark.

ANNOUNCE_TORCH_OUT = "Can still see, florp!",

But I do like the explanations above. That Charlie goes after people who perceive the darkness, or interact with it in some way.
And that Wurt is a target because she's different; she helps the survivors, she makes light sources, she upsets the natural order. She must be contained.

TL;DR it seems that Merms and Wurt do have night vision, but that she doesn't have it as a mechanic due to balance or lore.

This last update changed some of Wurt's lines regarding night vision:

- She says "Glowy!" rather than "Poor scale-less can't see in dark." when examining a lantern
- She says "What this thing?" rather than "This so scale-less can see in dark?" when examining Winona's Spotlight

What's odd is that the other lines mentioning her night vision were not changed (such as the one for torches running out of durability).

I think she hunts the intelligence. And there is a whole another lore about the names being started with W, being chosen for that reason and being able to  activate the gate etc. I mean your typical merm couldn’t make simple three course meal and beat the gnaw let alone  open the ancient gateway
