Volcano Application

Recommended Posts

Walling up and ignoring. There is no practical use for volcanoes, it's one of those flaws in game design like CO2 vents and hot steam vents.

They had a use before steel and thermium aquatuners (boiling oil), but nowadays it's just a wasted geyser slot.

If you really, really want to utilize them for something - no matter how useless - you can use them to melt regolith and make igneous rock for stone hatches. It's more effort than gain, though.

A steam turbine should be doable in the mid game before space. A double layer igneous-ceramic wall should hold most of the temperature. Then you just need to pump water and find a way to cool it down or store it as steam for your steam rockets. Storing it in sapce with vacuum around will guarantee no heat loss.

Ok, I think most of us will build a layer of steel to keep meteors at bay.

So if your able to heat that conductive steel layer up, regolith on top will melt and vent into space ;)

=> A nice way to clear regolith and in the peace season your able to retrieve just the iron

(Was more usefull before voles were introduced to deal with access regolith.)

magma volcano is the easiest way to get igneous rock, in my last save I was run out of igneous rock cause too much hatch, in very very very late games.

general, it`s useless.

the big volcano will produce a huge amount of magma in a short time, it`s not easy to handle with steam power.

One steam turbine can handle any magma volcano i've found.

Previously I've stuck to using magma volcanoes for extreme heating, i.e. cooking of petroleum, etc. Nowadays with Thermium, they have had their usefulness somewhat changed - in my current playthrough I have 3 (yes, sodding 3 of the bastards) magma volcanoes. As yet, i've only cracked into 2 of them - the third will stay buried forever as it lives in my favourite ice biome (we've all got one damnit!). The first is used as a supplementary steam turbine build, and honestly generates a heck of a lot of power. The 2nd is to be used for a sour gas cooker If I can pull my finger out ;)

In short, nothings changed with them - wall them off, leave a hotplate open made of either tungsten metal tiles or diamond window tiles, vacuum it off and deal with it when you need it for something :D

It`s interesting, the volcano in my map output 200+kg/s per second, it`s horrible, what about yours?

Pay no attention to the output rate, rather the overall stats. A geyser outputting at 100kg/s for 600 secs out of 700 is better than a geyser that outputs 1000kg for 3 seconds every month :)  Once you've analysed and can see the dormancy period etc, it'll tell you a lot more.

It's s nice to have a cheap way to get steam for your first rocket.

you can just build a box full of water in space and let the meteors heat the box up. And build it right next to your rocket. Even cheaper.
