PeteIsStarvin
My first post on these forums...In my opinion I reckon this game would be incredible if one day it was online multiplayer (I know, I know; it's not going to happen) with around 16 players. To balance this:-The world would need to be much bigger,-All animals and monsters would need to be much stronger,-Some resources would need to be more abundant,-Other players would need to be set as friend or foe (to stop you from triggering each other's traps etc). It's inevitable that some players would team up and would be able to construct mega fortresses and farms... However I think that you will get the same amount of people who would rather take other people's hard work then do it themselves! Queue mad max style survival war haha. And with the permadeath this game has it would be a brutal dog eat dog world!Just my ideas; anyone else have any similar ones? NikMik
I would love bigger worlds, but not in multiplayer. Multiplayer would be s****. It's just not a game that would work with multiplayer for many reasons (running out of resources VERY quickly even with more, ruining the feeling of loneliness the game creates so well, etc). Doctor H. Derp
I think Don't Starve would be ruined with multiplayer. I can already have a multiplayer experience with Terraria or Minecraft, and those games were built with mechanics with multiplayer in mind, unlike Don't Starve. I can already see the beginning meta in PvP multiplayer "Don't Starve;" burn everything. The opposing faction can't build log suits, much less a basic campfire, if all their resources are up in flames. Might as well just play Little Inferno with the steam chat on for a similar experience. And what would permadeath be like in a multiplayer Don't Starve PvP game? Someone dies and then they're just banned from the server until the game is over? And when would the game be over? After there's only one survivor left in a barren wasteland of an island with all the resources ravaged and squandered? Or does the game now continue with the last surviving survivor and we have to wait until he/she dies or purposely offs themselves? Giant fortresses? With what materials? Can't make walls out of grass or wood, they're countered with a torch. That leaves stone and thulecite, as if players would have the luxury to delve into the ruins to pick some up and use a psuedoscience station to make some before leaving the caves, meaning the only practical option is stone, which even if you bothered to gather the materials for it, a hammer takes it down fairly quick anyway. Don't Starve would have to be rebuilt from the ground up with multiplayer in mind in order to become what you want it to be, and as such, cease to be Don't Starve, at least what it embodies now. What you really want is a 2D Rust. Why don't you just go play Rust to satisfy your need for merciless competitive PvP survival and play this when want something different? NailBach
No, couldn't imagine Don't Starve beeing multiplayer. It would ruin the immersion it creates. The Game is about surviving alone in a hostile enviroment and it is very good at this. Not every game needs MP and Don't Starve is one of them. LadyD
Isolation is a big part of the game in both story, mood and reason why its so great. Klei has been yelled at, begged, pleaded and the answer is no. No multiplayer for this game. Its not what Don't Starve is about. DrPoppycock
While I like the idea of multiplayer, what everyone has pointed out is right - the game would need a total re-design to fit it.Doctor's point about the fire is really astute, too. I never thought about how much destruction one player could do with a single torch. If you were in a kamikaze mood, you could destroy so much with something that took 2 stacks of grass, 2 stacks of twigs, and a whole 2 seconds to make. :SIt would be amazing to make a giant fortress with everything you need in it, but once it was done, would you ever really leave it? Most multiplayer matches might end being 2 or three players huddled in their camps, waiting for the other to move first. Less Don't Starve, more Don't Move. Or, (I'm officially trademarking the hell out this great idea) Don't Starve: The Cold War Edition. Maximum124
oH MY GOD IM SICK OF EVERYONE SHOOTING DOWN MULTIPLAYER IDEAS Will Klei ever make multiplayer?? NO Can the community make a mod for it? I don't see why not! Yes the game would have to be overhauled and yes it might be game breaking in some respects but you have to realize that if you dont wanna play it you dont have to download the mod. There are mods in the workshop RIGHT NOW that break the game and allow cheats and items to be spawned in so I don't know why everyone's so adamant on shooting this idea down every single time it pops up I personally very much like the idea of multiplayer, resources would go faster but wouldnt that also push the players to find all the Things faster and regen a new world? Push them to beat adventure mode faster to complete the game? Friendly fire enabled so if you come across someone you could kill them for their items? Camp raids? Heck you could create an entire mulitplayer mode where someone acts as "Maxwell" and send hounds, spiders, change the weather to mess with a survivor It just makes me really really pissed off when I see people crush others creative ideas. That's all Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/31487-the-potential-of-dont-starve/#findComment-413952 Share on other sites

Boar Head
16 players?! Jesus, no way. That would just destroy this game. I can understand wanting 2 players to an extent but 16 players is just way too much. If there's one thing this game doesn't need it's multiplayer. Crynux
I believe multiplayer would work with this game. Yes, the game was designed for a lone player to be wandering the map trying to survive, but this doesn't mean a second player would ruin the game. If anything, it could add to the game. In the case where there were 2 players max, then the loss of a second player, either death or them going off on the map by themselves, could easily affect ones sanity. Additionally, sometimes it's nice to have someone around to do/share tasks with. I played one of the local multiplayer mods yesterday. Having 2 players is good enough... more than that though would be too much. But that's just my opinion Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/31487-the-potential-of-dont-starve/#findComment-414024 Share on other sites
Cynical Cynicist
I wouldn't play with anyone because their base-building skills wouldn't meet my standards. They'd probably just go "Look at me! Takes me like a full ingame day to place each individual berry bush because I want them all perfectly lined up from every angle. Oh and my fire pit area has to be the same every time. Fire pit in the middle, tent as close to the north side of the pit as possible and crock pot as close to the south edge as possible with a little freezer box next to it. Oh and a lightning rod, can't forget that or my berry bushes get hit and all go up at once. I may have a problem.. Doctor H. Derp
@Maximum124You already know my bias, but I'd just like to say that I have nothing against someone dedicating the time and resources to develop a mod to convert Don't Starve into a multiplayer game. If you ask me if the basic game should be multiplayer, I'll probably say no and list reasons why I dislike the idea, but mods are free reign. Have at it. Also, I know perfectly well that I could be wrong. My opinions are just that; opinion.
